  • Passivity theory is significantly applied to analyze stability of nonlinear dynamic systems and construct its stable control systems. This paper presents a passivity based control design approach for exciters and governors which are employed to regulate the terminal voltage and the rotor velocity of synchronous generator systems in industry fields. We consider the IEEE type 1 exciter and the gas turbine (GT) governor models respectively in this paper. We first carry out a passivity analysis for exciter and governor control systems, which are numerically obtained from its mathematical models. And then its control parameters are selected to assure passivity conditions in a design procedure. Lastly, we investigate numerical simulations to demonstrate reliability of the proposed control approach against large-scale generators with parameter changes.

  • In general, surface mounted PM synchronous motors (SPMSMs) are mainly adopted as a driving motor for high-speed applications, because they have high efficiency and high power density. However, the SPMSMs have some weak points such as the increase of magnetic reluctance and additional losses as a consequence of using a non-magnetic sleeve. Especially, the magneto-motive force (MMF) in the air-gap of the SPMSMs is weakened due to the magnetically increased resistance. For that reason, a large amount of PM is consumed to meet the required MMF. Nevertheless, it cannot help using the sleeve in order to maintain the mechanical integrity of a rotor assembly in high-speed rotation. Thus, in this paper, a multi-layer interior PM synchronous motor (IPMSM) not using the sleeve is presented and designed as an alternative of a SPMSM. Both motors are evaluated by test results based on a variety of characteristics required for an air blower system of a fuel cell electric vehicle.

  • Contra-rotating rotors have been adopted for some of the cooling fans to meet the demand for the high pressure and large flow rate. Therefore, it is important to clarify its inlet and outlet flows by experiments for the high performance and stable operation. PIV measurements were conducted at the design and partial flow rates. In the present paper, the inlet and outlet flow conditions of the contra-rotating small-sized cooling fan with a 40mm square casing are studied by using PIV measurement. Furthermore, improvements of the flow condition and design guideline to increase the performance were discussed based on the experimental results.

  • A numerical study is performed to investigate the interaction between subsonic axial turbine blade boundary layer and periodically oncoming rotor induced wakes. An implicit scheme for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equation is developed, which adopts a 4th-order compact difference for spatial discretiztion, a 2nd order Crank-Nicolson scheme for temporal discretization and the dynamic eddy viscosity model as the subgrid scale model. The efficiency and the accuracy of the proposed method are verified by applying to some benchmark problems such as laminar cylinder flow, laminar airfoil cascade flow and a transitional flat plate boundary layer flow. Computational results show good agreements with previous experimental and numerical results. Finally, flow through a stator cascade is simulated at $Re = 7.5{\times}10^5$ without free-stream turbulence intensity. The velocity fields and skin friction coefficients in the transitional region show similar trends with previous boundary layer natural transition.

  • The variable speed drive system of a electric motor is popular in industry due to its economical aspect and simplicity of implementation, comparing with a steam turbine or the other engine driven. For a large pumping load like a feedwater pump rated about or more than 20,000㎾, a synchronous motor could be primarily considered. In this paper, we studied the modelling of a variable speed drive system consisted with a load commutated inverter(LCI) and a brushless sailent pole rotor synchronous motor(SM) using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Simulation was performed with a small SM motor parameters.

  • Performance tests of an airfoil fan and measurement of flow fields at the impeller exit are carried out to investigate the effects of the tip clearance between the rotor and inlet casing on the impeller performance. The impeller is twelve bladed of NACA 65-810 airfoils and tested with 3 different size of gap; 1, 2, 4mm. The relative decrease of pressure rising performance of the fan is 15 percent for the design flow rate when the gap size is 1 percent of the impeller diameter. The reduction of performance becomes large as the flow rate increases. The leakage flow through the clearance affects the through flow of the impeller, which results in decrease of the slip factor as well as the impeller efficiency. The data base obtained in the present study can be used for the design and flow analysis of the airfoil fans.

  • In this paper, a digitalization of Induction Motor Vector Control System is proposed, where all processings are executed by using a processor. In Vector Control System, where the motor voltages are controlled by using the motor voltage model, the variation of the rotor flux-interlinkage is very small however the deviation of the torque becomes large. Thus, in order to enhance the torque performance, voltage model based vector control scheme with minor current loops, which can eliminate the high frequency current harmonics is used.

  • The dynamic response of a multi-MW wind turbine to a sudden change in wind speed is usually slow, because of the slow pitch control system. This could cause a large excursion of the rotor speed and an output power over the rated. A feedforward pitch control can be applied to minimize the fluctuations of these parameters. This paper introduces the complete design steps for a feedforward pitch controller, which consist of three stages, i.e. the aerodynamic torque estimation, the 3-dimensional lookup table for the wind seed estimation, and the calculation of the feedforward pitch amount. The effectiveness of the feedforward control is verified through numerical simulations of a multi-MW wind turbine.

  • Many kinds of speed sensorless control system of induction motor had been developed. But it is difficult to implement at the real system because of complex algorithm and equations. This paper investigates a novel speed sensorless control of induction motor using neural networks. The proposed control strategy is based on neural networks using stator current and output of neural model based on state observer. The errors between the stator current and the output of neural model are back-propagated to adjust the rotor speed, so that adaptive state variable will coincide with the desired state variable. This algorithm may overcome several shortages of conventional model, such as integrator problems, small EMF at low speed and relatively large sensitivity of stator resistance variation. Also, this paper presents a newly developed optimal equation about the momentum constant and the learning rate. The proposed algorithms are verified through simulation.

  • As a result of environmental concerns, renewable energy systems are rapidly increasing and particularly tidal current is a potential source of energy. In accordance with a large-capacity trend, doubly-fed induction generator is applied such as wind farms and tidal systems. In this paper, Optimal hysteresis band amplitude of CRPWM Converter is determined for improving rotor current waveform and electrical quality.
