  • PURPOSES : This study deals with the traffic accidents classified by the traffic analysis zone. The purpose is to develop the accident density models by using zonal traffic and socioeconomic data. METHODS : The traffic accident density models are developed through multiple linear regression analysis. In this study, three multiple linear models were developed. The dependent variable was traffic accident density, which is a measure of the relative distribution of traffic accidents. The independent variables were various traffic and socioeconomic variables. CONCLUSIONS : Three traffic accident density models were developed, and all models were statistically significant. Road length, trip production volume, intersections, van ratio, and number of vehicles per person in the transportation-based model were analyzed to be positive to the accident. Residential and commercial area ratio and transportation vulnerability ratio obtained using the socioeconomic-based model were found to affect the accident. The major arterial road ratio, trip production volume, intersection, van ratio, commercial ratio, and number of companies in the integrated model were also found to be related to the accident.

  • This research addresses the problem of estimating Origin-Destination (O-D) trip matrices from link volume counts, a set of unobserved link volumes and information of user equilibrium flows in transportation networks. A heuristic algorithm for estimating unobserved link flows is derived, which provides volume estimates that are approximately consistent with both observed flows and an assumption of user equilibrium conditions. These estimated link volumes improve the constraints associated with the synthetic OD estimation model, providing improved solution search procedure. Model performance is tracked in terms of the root mean square errors (RMSE) in predicted travel demands, and where appropriate, predicted linked volumes. These results indicate that the new model substantially outperforms existing approaches to estimating user-equilibrium based synthetic O-D matrices.

  • With the recent increase in interest in climate change issues, the use of bicycles is complementing public transportation and attracting attention as one of the eco-friendly means of transportation. Daejeon Metropolitan City has been operating Tashu, a public bicycle, since 2008. This study empirically analyzed the spatial characteristics that affect the use of public bicycles by grasping the current status and characteristics of public bicycles and applying spatial econometrics analysis, an analysis model that considers the spatial dependence of spatial data. In addition, a comparative analysis was performed by deriving the results of analyzing six models in terms of rental, return, peak time, non-peak time, weekday, and weekend based on the spatial error model identified as the optimal spatial econometrics model. The analysis model results showed that significant spatial characteristics differed according to the type of public bicycle use. In general, the use of public bicycles was high in areas with a high proportion of young people, a high number of public transportation users, good access to universities and rivers, and relatively low land use mix, and high proportion of apartments. These results indicated that public bicycles are used for commuting purposes on weekdays and leisure purposes on weekends, and if the convenience of using bicycles is improved, the use of public bicycles can be further increased.

  • Remote sensing technology using a multi-spectral satellite imagery can be utilized for the analysis of urban heat island effect in large area. However, weather condition of Korea mostly has a lot of clouds and it makes periodical observation using time-series of satellite images difficult. For this reason, we proposed the analysis of urban heat island effect using time-series of Landsat TM images and ATC model. To analyze vegetation condition and urbanization, NDVI and NDBI were calculated from Landsat images. In addition, land surface temperature was calculated from thermal infrared images to estimate the parameters of ATC model. Furthermore, the parameters of ATC model were compared based on the land cover map created by Korean Ministry of Environment to analyze urban heat island effect relating to the pattern of land use and land cover. As a result of a correlation analysis between calculated spectral indices and parameters of ATC model, MAST had high correlation with NDVI and NDBI (-0.76 and 0.69, respectively) and YAST also had correlation with NDVI and NDBI (-0.53 and 0.42, respectively). By comparing the parameters of ATC model based on land cover map, urban area had higher MAST and YAST than agricultural land and grassland. In particular, residential areas, industrial areas, commercial areas and transportation facilities showed higher MAST than cultural facilities and public facilities. Moreover, residential areas, industrial areas and commercial areas had higher YAST than the other urban areas.

  • In indoor radio systems, vehicular communication systems, and land mobile systems, a very important problem is that of maintaining stable communications at all locations. Therefore solutions for the indoor propagation problem are important aspects of the mobile communication system. leaky coxial cables are finding increasing use in communications systesm involving mines, tunnels, tailroads, and highways, and in new obstacle detection, or guided radar, schemes for ground transportation and perimenter surveilance. In this paper a leaky coaxial cable having periodic slots in the outer conductor is described to obtain the propagation modes in the various environments. We use aneccentric cylindrical model to develop the theory for surface-wave propagation on the cable. Numerical Results are also included for the propagation constants, field distribution and current distribution. First, we derive the electromagnetic equation for leaky coaxial cable having symmetrical periodic slots using mode-matching method and Floquet's theorem, and then find various modes, propagation constants, field distribution, etc.

  • Until now, the location and the size of gate are designed by only experience and intuitive use judgement. However there are no studies that investigated how many people will be using each subway gate depending on the location of gates. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a gate choice model of subway station. The most critical element of a gate choice in subway station is the location of pedestrian's destinations. In this study, the development of the regression model is constructed from data of land use characteristic of station vicinity and the number of bus route and the space structure of station vicinity(Depth concept by Space Syntax analysis and total road length of station vicinity) by using the real data of 30 subway station in Seoul. This study found that subway pedestrian flow are mainly determined by three factors; the total floor space of commercial buildings, Total Depth(space structure index of station vicinity), and the number of bus route. The verification of a proposed model is done by using the real gate pedestrian data of two subway station in Seoul; Gang-nam and Yang-jae. The additional study of how to define the gate impact area is analysed. Therefore, this study will provide the theoretical bases in decision of gate location and size when a new subway station is opened in future.

  • In January 2020, the first COVID-19 confirmed patient occurred in Korea, and the pandemic continues to this day. In unprecedented situations, COVID-19 also affected the transportation sector, and there were no appropriate measures against changes in traffic volume and use of public transportation due to changes in citizens' lifestyles. Currently, each local government has not established separate measures for pandemic disease measures. In order to establish future disease countermeasures in the transportation sector, a predictive model was developed by analyzing the traffic volume and the number of public transportation uses, and conducting correlation analysis with the current status of COVID-19. As a result of the analysis, the traffic volume decreased, but the traffic volume decreased due to the increase in personal transportation, but it did not reach the number of public transportation uses. In addition, it was analyzed that the use of public transportation was initially affected by the number of confirmed cases, but over time, it was more sensitive to death and mortality than to the number of confirmed cases.

  • In this study, We analyzed the characteristics of carsharing use and revealed the environmental factors influencing carsharing use using the records of carsharing had been operated in Incheon during 2016. The records show a higher ratio of male users, a big portion of 20s and 30s, and ascending trends in the use of elderly people and short distances compared to the past. We analyzed the relationship between carsharing use and neighborhood environmental factors using the negative binomial regression model. It was found that carsharing was more active in areas where have many public transportation users and higher portion of residential buildings. Therefore, it was concluded that these areas can be suitable candidates for placing new carsharing rental sites to expect more active carsharing use.
