  • The $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ algebraic stress model (KEASM) was applied to atmospheric dispersion simulation using the Lagrangian particle dispersion model and was compared with the most popular turbulence closure model in the field of atmospheric simulation, the Mellor-Yamada (MY) model. KEASM has been rarely applied to atmospheric simulation, but it includes the pressure redistribution effect of buoyancy due to heat and momentum fluxes. On the other hand, such effect is excluded from MY model. In the simulation study, the difference in the two turbulence models was reflected to both the turbulent velocity and the Lagrangian time scale. There was little difference in the vertical diffusion coefficient $\sigma$$_{z}$. However, the horizontal diffusion coefficient or calculated by KEASM was larger than that by MY model, coincided with the Pasquill-Gifford (PG) chart. The applicability of KEASM to atmospheric simulations was demonstrated by the simulations.s.

  • Numerical simulation is performed to evaluate the conditional moment closure (CMC) models for spray development, ignition, and turbulent combustion for the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) test cases. The CMC model is implemented in the open source code, OpenFOAM, to provide conditional flame structures through the solution of Eulerian as well as Lagrangian conditional transport equations. In spite of more accurate treatment of the convective term, Eulerian CMC provides similar ignition delays and lift-off lengths with Lagrangian CMC.

  • Large eddy simulation has been applied to simulate turbulent flow around a cubic obstacle mounted on a channel surface for a Reynolds number of 40000(based on the incoming bulk velocity and the obstacle height) using a Smagorinsky model and a Lagrangian dynamic model. In order to develop the LES to the practical engineering application, the effect of upwind scheme, turbulent sub-grid scale model were investigated. The computed velocities. turbulence quantifies, separation and reattachment length were evaluated by compared with the previous experimental results.

  • A method is proposed for locating the heat sources from temperature observations, and its applicability is investigated for urban thermal environment simulations. A Lagrangian particle dispersion model, which is originally built for simulating the pollutants spread in the air, is exploited to identify the heat sources by transporting the Lagrangian heat particles backwards in time. The urban wind fields are estimated using a diagnostic meteorological model incorporating the morphological model for the urban canopy. The proposed method is tested for the horizontally homogeneous urban boundary layer problems. The effects of the turbulence levels and the computational time on the simulation are investigated.

  • Bubble columns are widely encountered in several industries, especially in the field of nuclear safety. The Eulerian-Eulerian and the Eulerian-Lagrangian methods are commonly used to investigate bubble columns. Eulerian approaches require additional tasks such as strict volume conservation at the interface and a predefined well-structured grid. In contrast, the Lagrangian approach can be easily implemented. Hence, we introduce a fully Lagrangian approach for the simulation of bubble columns using the discrete bubble model (DBM) and moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) methods. Additionally, we propose a rigorous method to estimate the volume fraction accurately, and verified it through experimental data and analytical results. The MPS method was compared with the experimental data of Dambreak. The DBM was verified by analyzing the terminal velocity of a single bubble for each bubble size. It agreed with the analytical results for each of the four drag correlations. Additionally, the improved method for calculating the volume fraction showed agreement with the Ergun equation for the pressure drop in a packed bed. The implemented MPS-DBM was used to simulate the bubble column, and the results were compared with the experimental results. We demonstrated that the MPS-DBM was in quantitative agreement with the experimental data.

  • The dispersion of Lagrangian fluid particles in a turbulent channel flow is studied by a direct numerical simulation. Four points Hermite interpolation in the homogeneous direction and Chebyshev polynomials in the inhomogeneous direction is adopted by assesing the acceleration of fluid particles. In order to characterize the inhomogeneous Lagrangian statistics, accurate single particle Lagrangian statistics are obtained along the wall normal direction. Integral time scales of Lagrangian velocity can be normalized by Eulerian mean shear stresses.

  • In the Lagrangian vortex particle method based on the vorticity-velocity formulation for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, a numerical scheme for calculating pressure fields is presented. Implementation of the numerical method is directly connected with the well-established surface panel methods, just by dealing with the dynamic coupling among vorticity field. Assuming the vorticity and the velocity fields are to be calculated in time domain analysis, the pressure calculation for a complete set of solution at present time step is performed in a similar way to the one used in the Eulerian description. For a validation of the present method, we illustrate the early development of the viscous flow about an impulsive started circular cylinder for Reynolds number 550. The comparative study with the Eulerian finite Volume method provides an extensive understanding and application of the mesh-free Lagrangian vortex methods for numerical simulation of viscous flows around arbitrary bodies of general shape.

Experiment and simulation related to that was carried out. the variables considered in this phenomena include the electrolytic zinc coated steel sheet and carbon steel rod. In the former, the confirmation and projectile velocity possible phenomena of real phenomena is done, the latter, the effect of parameter such as time-step and grid space length is analized by using the three-dimensional Lagrangian explicit time-integration finite element code, HEMP. this code use the eight node hexahedral elements and in this study, Von-Mises Criteria is used as the strength model, Mie-Gruneisen is as the Equation of State. the simulation was performed by contrast with the experiment. through the calibration of the parameter of lagrangian code, reasonable result was approached.

  • A high resolution model is proposed for calculating the temperature field of a large city, based upon a Lagrangian particle model. Utilizing the analogy between the heat and mass transport phenomena in turbulent flows, a Lagrangian particle model, originally developed for air pollutant dispersion problems, is adapted for simulating heat transport. In the model conceptual heat particles are released into the atmosphere from the heat sources and move along with the turbulent winds in accordance with the Markov process. The potential temperature assumed to be conserved along with heat particles serves as a tag, so the temperature fields can be deduced from the distribution of particles. The wind fields are constructed from a diagnostic meteorology model incorporating a morphological model designed for building flows. Test run shows the robustness of the modeling system.

  • A Semi-Lagrangian method based on CIP(Cubic Interpolated Pseudoparticle)method is proposed and it is applied to solve the two dimensional advection equation. Especially the attentions are given to settle the pole problem and to enhance the accuracy in solving the advection equation on the spherical coordinate system. Tn this algorithm, the CU method is employed as the Semi-Lagrangian method and extended to the spherical coordinate system. To enhance the accuracy of the solution, the spatial discretization is made by CIP method. The mathematical formulation and numerical results are also described. To verify the efficiency, accuracy and capability of proposed algorithm, two dimensional rotating cosine bell problem and the frontogenesis problem are simulated by the present scheme. As results, it is confirmed that the present scheme gives an accurate solution and settles the pole problem in the advection equation on the sphere.
