  • Sediment transport model based on the Lagrangian concept considering the grain size distribution(GSD) was setup and the change of the sediment diffusion range was analysed in the condition of considering and not considering the GSD. The GSD curve is assumed as the Log-normal distribution function in order to consider the GSD with respect to the Lagrangian concept and the random numbers, i.e. sediment particles, are generated based on the distribution function. The sediment particles is assumed as the spherical type and the random numbers based on the sediment weight is converted to the sediment diameters. Sediment transport patterns are analysed by the settling simulation, in which the settling velocity is computed by the van Rijn formulae and the horizontal diffusion coefficient is used as the constant parameter. The diffusion patterns are very similar to the patterns with GSD condition. The diffusion range defined as the range including 90%, 99% sediment weight of the total sediment weight, however, is larger than without considering GSD condition in 90%-option and shorter than with considering GSD condition in 99-option, respectively. The diffusion range is defined as tile p-percentage of the cumulative sediment weight region with reference to the 50% region, 90%- option, 99%-option, respectively.

  • In this research, the finite element analysis of piezocone penetration and dissipation tests have been conducted using the anisotropic elastoplastic-viscoplastic bounding surface model in the Updated Lagrangian reference frame for the large deformation and finite strain nu\ature of piezocone penetration. Accordingly, virtual work equation and corresponding finite element equations have been reformulated. Theory of mixtures has been incorporated to explain the behavior of the sol. It has been observed that the viscoplastic part of the soil model affected the whole formulation. The results of the finite element analysis have been compared and investigated with the experimental results. The formulations and the results are described in part 'I' and part 'II', respectively.

  • Theoretical and experimental techniques to analyze the two-dimensional liquid motion in a tank are discussed. A Lagrangian FEM with a velocity correction procedure is introduced to describe incompressible free surface fluid flow. A mesh rezoning technique is used to prevent strong distortion of finite elements in the Lagrangian description. Model test technique for sloshing tank is developed using a hydraulic type bench tester. The influence of the variation in the exciting frequency and amplitude are observed for various fill depths. The results of theoretical calculations are compared with those of experiments.

  • The purpose of this study is development of a finite element algorithm to find out the stressed condition, slipped direction and slipped dimension when some elements of cable-membrane structures are slipped from it's initially designed coordinates by external loads as wind or non uniform load and so on. In order to search the slipped behaviors of cable-membrane structures, a Arbitrarily-Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) finite element formulation is introduced. In these procedures, a stiffness matrix related with ALE concept is formulated and a FE analysis program for cable-membrane structures with slipped elements is developed. Various examples for cable and membrane structures are presented to verify the program's validation. The results are shown good agreement with that of existed one.

  • For the dynamic nonlinear analysis of stiffened plate and shell structures, total Lagrangian formulation is presented based upon the degenerated shell element considering finite rotation effects. Assumed strain concept is adopted in order to overcome shear locking phenomena and to eliminate spurious zero energy mode. In the elasto-plastic analysis, the return mapping algorithm based on the consistent elasto-plastic tangent modulus is applied to collapse analysis of shell structures. Newmark integration method is used for dynamic nonlinear analysis of shell structures under dynamic forces.

  • Gas-particle two phase flow and heat transfer in a cavity receiving thermal radiation through selectively transparent walls have been analyzed by a finite difference method. Particles injected from the upper hole of the cavity are accelerated downward by gravity and exit through the lower hole while they absorb, emit and scatter the incident thermal radiation. Gas phase is heated through convection heat transfer from particles, and consequently buoyancy induced flow field is formed. Two-equation model with two-way coupling is adopted and interaction terms are treated as sources by PSI-Cell method. For the particulate phase, Lagrangian method is employed to describe velocities and temperatures of particles. As thermal radiation is incident upon horizontally, radiative heat transfer in the vertical direction is assumed negligible and two-flux model is used for the solution of radiative heat flus. Gas phase velocity and temperature distributions, and particle trajectories, velocities and temperatures are presented. The effects of particle inlet condition, particle size, injection velocity and particle mass rate are mainly investigated.

  • This study focuses on the numerical simulations of the cone penetration tests in a sand ground. The mechanical responses of sand were described using the modified Mohr Coulomb plasticity model based on the critical state soil mechanics. In the plasticity model, the dilatancy angle was not a constant, but a function of the distance to the critical state line from the current state of void ratio and mean effective stress. To simulate cone penetration tests numerically, this study relied on Lagrangian finite element method under the axisymmetric condition. To enable penetration of the cone penetrometer without tearing elements along the symmetric axis, the penetration guide concept was adopted in this study. The results of numerical simulations on the calibration chamber cone penetration tests had good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This paper describes a numerical method for predicting the incompressible unsteady laminar three-dimensional flows with free-surface. The Navier-Stokes equations governing the flows have been discretized by means of finite-difference approximations, and the resulting equations have been solved via the SIMPLE-C algorithm. The free-surface is defined by the motion of a set of marker particles and the interface behaviour was investigated by means of a "Lagrangian" technique. Using the GALA concept of Spalding, the conventional mass continuity equation is modified to form a volumetric or bulk-continuity equation. The use of this bulk-continuity relation allows the hydrodynamic variables to be computed over the entire flow domain including both liquid and gas regions. Thus, the free-surface boundary conditions are imposed implicitly and the problem formulation is greatly simplified. The numerical procedure is validated by comparing the predicted results of a periodic standing waves problems with analytic solutions. The results show that this numerical method produces accurate and physically realistic predictions of three-dimensional free-surface flows.

  • Compressive Sensing (CS) is a new signal acquisition paradigm which enables sampling under Nyquist rate for a special kind of signal called sparse signal. There are plenty of CS recovery methods but their performance are still challenging, especially at a low sub-rate. For CS recovery of natural images, regularizations exploiting some prior information can be used in order to enhance CS performance. In this context, this paper addresses improving quality of reconstructed natural images based on Dantzig selector and smooth filters (i.e., Gaussian filter and nonlocal means filter) to generate a new regularization called smooth residual error regularization. Moreover, total variation has been proved for its success in preserving edge objects and boundary of reconstructed images. Therefore, effectiveness of the proposed regularization is verified by experimenting it using augmented Lagrangian total variation minimization. This framework is considered as a new CS recovery seeking smoothness in residual images. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvement of the proposed framework over some other CS recoveries both in subjective and objective qualities. In the best case, our algorithm gains up to 9.14 dB compared with the CS recovery using Bayesian framework.
