  • The subject research attempts to develop a new temporal interpolation scheme for the method of characteristics. The proposed three-point time-line Lagrange interpolation Reachback (3PR) method is a temporal quadratic interpolation scheme using the three grid points near the intersection between a characteristic line and a previous time-line. The accuracy of the 3PR method is compared with those of temporal and spatial interpolation schemes such as Reachback, Upwind, and quandratic spatial interpolation methods for two pure advection problems. The results show that on the aspects of the numerical damping and/or oscillation the temporal interpolation schemes are better than the spatial ones under the same interpolation order conditions. In addition, the spatial ones under the same interpolation order conditions. In addition, the proposed 3PR method improves the accuracy of Reachback method as well as it contains the merits of time-line interpolation schemes.

  • The structural deformed shape is important information to structural analysis. If the sufficient measuring points are secured at the structural monitoring system, reasonable and accurate structural deformation shapes can be obtained and structural analysis is possible using this deformation. However, the accurate estimation of the global structural shapes might be difficult if sufficient measuring points are not secure under cost limitations. In this study, SFSM-LS algorithm, the economic and effective estimation method for the structural deformation shapes with limited displacement measuring points is developed and suggested. In the suggested method, the global structural deformation shape is determined by the superposition of the pre-investigated structural deformed shapes obtained by preliminary FE analyses, with their optimum weight factors which lead minimization of the estimate errors. 2-span continuous bridge model is used to verify developed algorithm and parametric studies are performed. By the parametric studies, the characteristics of the estimation results obtained by the suggested method were investigated considering essential parameters such as pre-investigated structural shapes, locations and numbers of displacement measuring points. By quantitative comparison of estimation results with the conventional methods such as polynomial, Lagrange and spline interpolation, the applicability and accuracy of the suggested method was validated.

  • Actual engineering structure is frequently very complex, and parts of structure are designed independently by different engineers. Also each structure contains so many degree of freedom. For these reason, methods have been developed which permits the structure to be divided into components or substructures, with analysis being done on a small substructure in order to obtain a full structural system. In such case, because of different mesh size among finite element model (FEM) or different matching points among FEM models and experimentally obtained models, their interfacing points may be non-matching. Solving this non-matching problem is useful to other application such as structural dynamic modification or model updating. In this work, virtual node concept is introduced. Lagrange multipliers are used to enforce the interface compatibility constraint, and interface displacement is approximated by polynomial presentation. The governing equation of whole structure is derived using hybrid variational principle. The eigenvalue of whole structure are calculated using the determinant search method. The number of degree of freedom in the eigenvalue problem can be drastically reduced to just the number of interface degree of freedom. Some numerical simulation is performed to show usefulness of synthesis method.

  • A theoretical formulation based on the linearized potential theory, the Descartes' rule and the extremum optimization method is presented to calculate the critical distance of lifting points of the fully balanced hoist vertical ship lift, and to study pitching stability of the ship lift. The overturning torque of the ship chamber is proposed based on the Housner theory. A seven-free-degree dynamic model of the ship lift based on the Lagrange equation of the second kind is then established, including the ship chamber, the wire rope, the gravity counterweights and the liquid in the ship chamber. Subsequently, an eigenvalue equation is obtained with the coefficient matrix of the dynamic equations, and a key coefficient is analyzed by innovative use of the minimum optimization method for a stability criterion. Also, an extensive influence of the structural parameters contains the gravity counterweight wire rope stiffness, synchronous shaft stiffness, lifting height and hoists radius on the critical distance of lifting points is numerically analyzed. With the Runge-Kutta method, the four primary dynamical responses of the ship lift are investigated to demonstrate the accuracy/reliability of the result from the theoretical formulation. It is revealed that the critical distance of lifting points decreases with increasing the synchronous shaft stiffness, while increases with rising the other three structural parameters. Moreover, the theoretical formulation is more applicable than the previous criterions to design the layout of the fully balanced hoist vertical ship lift for the ensuring of the stability.

  • Current paper investigates the dynamic behavior and stability of an infrared search and track subjected to external disturbance having gimbal structure with three rotating axes keeping constant angular velocity in the azimuth direction. Euler-Lagrange equation is applied to derive the coupled nonlinear dynamic equation of motion of infrared search and track and the characteristics of dynamic coupling are investigated. Two equilibrium points with small variations from the nonlinear coupling system are derived and the specific condition from which a coupled equation can be three independent equations is derived. Finally, to examine the stability of system, Lyapunov direct method was used and system stability and stability boundaries are investigated.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a new Meshless Method to solve 2-D compressible flow problems numerically. This paper includes a revised Least Square method that improves robustness compared with its original version by removing excessive numerical oscillation which occurs when points are randomly distributed. Numerical analyses of hypersonic flow over a blunt body were carried out using the method, then robustness, accuracy and convergence of their results were compared with those obtained from the original method.

  • The elastic effects of the valve train components are analyzed by using the finite element models of the rocker arm and valve. The whole equations of motion of the valvetrain of an internal combustion engine formulated by finite element techniques are solved by imposing the contact conditions with the augmented Lagrange multiplier method. The velocity and acceleration constraints as well as the displacement constraints are imposed on the contact points. The numerical simulations show that, even if the magnitude of the elastic deformation of the components is very small, it may have large effects on the valvetrain dynamics of a high-speed engine.

  • An equilibrium point of a WIP (Wheeled Inverted Pendulum) with changing its center of gravity is derived and validated by various numerical simulations. Generally, the WIP has two equilibrium points which are unstable and stable one. The unstable one is interested in this study. To keep the WIP over the unstable equilibrium point, the WIP is consistently being adjusted. A state feedback controller for the WIP needs a control reference for the equilibrium point. The control reference can be obtained by studying an equilibrium point of the WIP based on statics. By using Lagrange method, this study is deriving dynamic equations of the WIP both with and without changing its center of gravity. Various numerical simulations are carried out to show the validation of the equilibrium point.

  • In meshless methods some techniques to impose essential boundary conditions have been developed since the approximations do not satisfy Kronecker delta properties at nodal points. In this study, new scheme for imposing essential boundary conditions is developed. Weight functions are modified by multiplying with auxiliary weight functions and the resulting shape functions satisfy Kronecker delta property on the bound ary nodes. In addition, the resulting shape functions possess and interpolation features on the boundary segments where essential boundary conditions are prescribed. Therefore the essential boundary conditions can be exactly satisfied with the new method. More importantly, the impositions of essential boundary conditions using the present method is relatively easy as in finite element method. Numerical examples show that the method also retains high convergence rate comparable to Lagrange multiplier method.

  • Nonlinear bending of super-elliptical plates of uniform thickness under uniform transverse pressure was investigated by the Ritz method. The material was assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic. The contribution of the boundary conditions at the point supports was introduced by the Lagrange multipliers. The solution was obtained by the Newton-Raphson method. The influence of the location of the point supports on the central deflection was highlighted by sensitivity analysis. An approximate relationship between the central deflection and the super-elliptical power was obtained using the method of least squares. The critical points where the maximum deflection may develop, and the influence of nonlinearity were highlighted. The nonlinearity was found to be sensitive to the aspect ratio. The accuracy of the algorithm was validated by comparing the central deflection with the solutions of elliptical and rectangular plates.
