In this study, a dynamic camera actuation system for simultaneous in situ image acquisition is developed to achieve real-time observation of transient liquid flow on a lab-on-a-disk. A disk-type electric circuit, namely circuit-on-a-disk, co-rotated with the lab-on-a-disk improves the dynamic image acquisition ability in terms of a frame rate. The circuit-on-a-disk is comprised of a camera connected with a motor, a microprocessor and a wireless communication module. The camera connected with the motor enables to realize dynamic tracking of a transient flow and real-time image acquisition. The obtained images can be simultaneously transferred by a video/audio transmitter unit to a personal computer. Also, the microprocessor receives signals from the personal computer, and then controls the focusing position of the camera. We are expecting that heaters, sensors, and light sources also can be integrated on the circuit-on-a-disk, and they will enable various functional actuations as well as precise image acquisition.
In this paper, we proposed a laser-based non-contact temperature measuring method for high speed rotating polycarbonate (PC) disk using transparency change of thermocolor. The thermocolor has abilities to change color and transparency due to a change in temperature. The thermocolor is applied on one side of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The thermocolor applied membrane is attached to inside of reaction chamber in disk. An optical system consisted of a laser beam radiator and a laser photometer is installed. Laser is irradiated at the bottom side of disk and the transmitted laser beam is detected by the laser photometer at the opposite side of disk. During the disk is rotating, laser is irradiated and detected simultaneously. The laser photometer senses the transmitted laser power and generates voltage as output. The temperature of disk can be detected during the disk is rotating up to 3000 RPM.
A three-dimensional slope valve component is used for controlling micro volume of liquid on a centrifugal force-based microfluidic disk platform, also called a lab-on-a-disk. The modeling factor of the slope valve component is determined to centrifugal force for liquid passing the crest of a slope valve via variation of slope length and angle as well as the radius to start point of slope valve. The centrifugal force is calculated by the equilibrium equation of the capillary and gravitational forces according to the microchannel surface roughness and the liquid volume, respectively. As a result, the slope valve is analyzed by the minimum angular velocity for liquid passing at crest point and the ratio between the length of micro liquid and slope length to obtain the factors for optimal slope angle modeling.
This paper presents a new type of absolute rotary encoder system based on the affine n-digit N-ary gray code. A brief comparison of the existing encoder systems is carried out in terms of resolution, encoding and decoding principles and number of sensor heads needed. Using the proposed method, two different types of encoder disks are designed, namely, color-coded disk and grayscale coded disk. The designed coded disk pattern is used to manufacture 3 digit 3 ary and 2 digit 5 ary grayscale coded disks respectively. The manufactured disk is used with the light emitter and photodetector assembly to design the entire encode system. Experimental analysis is done on the designed prototype with LabVIEW platform for data acquisition. A comparison of the designed system is done with the traditional binary gray code encoder system in terms of resolution, disk diameter, number of tracks and data acquisition system. The resolution of the manufactured system is 3 times higher than the conventional system. Also, for a 5 digit 5 ary coded encoder system, a resolution approximately 100 times better than the conventional binary system can be achieved. In general, the proposed encoder system gives $(N/2)^n$ times better resolution compared with the traditional gray coded disk. The miniaturization in diameter of the coded disk can be achieved compared to the conventional binary systems.
In the braking of a railroad car, mechanical brake systems using wheel tread and brake disk are applied as well as electrical brake systems by regenerator and rheostat. It is very important to consider the frictional characteristic because kinetic energy of the vehicle is dissipated as converted thermal energy through friction between disk and brake pad during disk braking. A friction coefficient and wear characteristic are decided from the interrelationship of disk and friction material in the disk brake system. Lab-scale dynamometer test on developed brake disk materials for increasing heat resistance was performed in this study. Each candidate material was tested at various braking speeds and pressures and we obtained the friction coefficient and wear characteristic. And we executed comparative evaluation of the result from the test.
In the present study, we propose new type of a spinning disk reactor(SDR) with high performance and very convenient structure to make a large scale equipment from lab-scale than the conventional one. A split-disk experimental equipment, based on new type of spinning disk reactor, has been developed to generate an energy to break a bulk of injected gas into smaller gas bubble. Several cases of an experimental observation make it to confirm that a bulk of injecting gas could be continuously break into smaller bubbles. It shows the feasibility to make a scale-up of SDR by using the characteristic of Taylor-Proudman column in rotating flow. A theoretical study on single phase liquid flow is given to predict a liquid induced shear stress, which make the present study to be self-containment.
This paper present a modified repetitive control scheme for an optical storage system to track a periodic reference signal with dynamic change in period. Periodic disturbances can be adequately attenuated using the concept of repetitive control, provided the period is know. An optical storage system supports various speeds. To deal with time varying periodic disturbances, an proposed repetitive controller is turned based on repetitive control to change sampling frequency to follow the change of reference Period. A modified repetitive control scheme is proposed and implement on experimental set up of a optical disk driver.
In hard disk drives as the head to disk spacing continues to decrease to facilitate recording densities, slider disk interactions have become much more severe due to direct contact of head and disk surfaces in both start/stop and flying cases. The slider disk interaction in CSS (contact-start-stop) mode is an important source of particle generation and tribocharge build-up. The tribocharge build-up in the slider disk interface can cause ESD (electrostatic discharge) damage. In turn, ESD can cause severe melting damage to MR or GMR heads. The spindle speed of typical hard disk drives has increased in recent years from 5400 rpm to 15000 rpm and even higher speeds are anticipated in the near future. And the increasing disk velocity leads to increasing disk acceleration and this might affect the tribocharging phenomena of the slider/disk interface. We investigated the tribocurrent/voltage build-up generated in HDD, operating at increasing disk accelerations. In addition, we examined the effects with relative humidity conditions and rest time. We found that the tribocurrent/voltage was generated during pico-slider/disk interaction and its level was about $3\sim16pA$ and $0.1\sim0.3V$, respectively. Tribocurrent/voltage build-up was reduced with increasing disk acceleration. Higher humidity conditions $(75\sim80%)$ produced lower levels tribovoltage/current. Therefore, a higher tribocharge is expected at a lower disk acceleration and lower relative humidity condition. Rest time affected the charge build-up at the slider-disk interface. The degree of tribocharge build-up increased with increasing rest time.
A structural analysis was carried out for a 60 N.m class flexible disk coupling. Flexible disk couplings are used to transmit power between two shafts. When a flexible coupling is used, some amount of misalignments such as angle of deviation and end play can be allowed in assembling the shafts. However, the maximum allowable misalignment should be decided to guarantee the fatigue life. In this study, the effect of the angle of deviation and end play on the maximum stress was investigated. From the analysis results, it was shown that the angle of deviation has a greater effect on the maximum stress than the end play. Furthermore, the dimensions of the disk plate were optimized to realize a better design. From the optimization, the maximum stress could be reduced by up to 5.2%.
In this work, limit elastic speed analysis of functionally graded porous rotating disks has been reported. The work proposes an effective approach for modeling the mechanical properties of a porous functionally graded rotating disk. Four different types of porosity models namely: uniform, symmetric, inner maximum, and outer maximum distribution are considered. The approach used is the variational principle, and the solution has been achieved using Galerkin's error minimization theory. The study aims to investigate the effect of grading indices, aspect ratio, porosity volume fraction, and porosity types on limit angular speed for uniform and variable disk geometries of constant mass. To validate the current study, finite element analysis has been used, and there is good agreement between the two methods. The study yielded a decrease in limit speed as grading indices and aspect ratio increase. The porosity volume fraction is found to be more significant than the aspect ratio effect. The research demonstrates a range of operable speeds for porous and non-porous disk profiles that can be used in industries as design data. The results show a significant increase in limit speed for an exponential disk when compared to other disk profiles, and thus, the study demonstrates a range of FG-based structures for applications in industries that will not only save material (lightweight structures) but also improve overall performance.
