In this study, a prototype fiber-optic biosensor was fabricated using the inhibition of enzyme reaction by organophosphorus compounds to detect organophosphorus compounds, which is nervous toxic material an? is used as chemical weapon and pesticide. Enzyme, substrate, and inhibitor for enzyme reaction were acetylcholinesterase (key enzyme in nervous cell), acetylthiocholine iodide, and paraoxon (a kind of organophosphorus compounds), respectively. The detection principle of sensor is the detection of enzyme reaction inhibited by organophosphorus compounds by the quantitative measurement of acetic acid, which was achieved by absorbance measurement using litmus solution that maximum absorbance band is changed by pH. To fabricate prototype fiber-optic biosensor, high bright LED and photodiode was used as light source and light intensity detector, respectively. From the experimental results using a prototype biosensor, the linear change of sensor signal was obtained in a range of 0-2 ppm inhibitor concentrations. From these results, it was verified that the quantitative measurement of organophosphorus compounds could be achieved fast (within 2 minutes) and accurately by a prototype fiber-optic biosensor.
This study describes a non-invasive optical sensor and system in order to obtain oxygen saturation of blood, in-vitro. The sensor contains LED 665nm and 805nm of wavelength for light source and PIN photodiode for light detector in flat pack. The sensor system for measurement of oxygen saturation has breadboarded, including signal amplifier, filter, displayer, A/D converter, microprocessor and memory. Experimental set-up for non-invasive measurement of oxygen saturation in-vitro was done. When the variation of oxygen saturation is compared with that of each wavelength, the variation of 665nm is more than that of 805nm by five times. As oxygen saturation varies from 100% to 60%, and the reflection ratio (R805/R665) is changed linearly. The oxygen saturation in $100%{\sim}60%$ range can be measured with about 5% resolution by the developed sensor, such that if this sensor connects with the main artery and vein, the artificial heart can be controlled rapidly and precisely from measurement of the sensor.
This study was carried out to develop a small-sized biosensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for the rapid identification of insecticide residues for food safety. The SPR biosensor module consists of a single 770 nm-light emitting diodes (LED) light source, several optical lenses for transferring light, a hemisphere sensor chip, photo detector, A/D converter, power source, and software for signal processing using a computer. Except for the computer, the size and weight of the sensor module are 150 (L)$\times$70 (W)$\times$120 (H) mm and 828 g, respectively. Validation and application procedures were designed to assess refractive index analysis, affinity properties, sensitivity, linearity, limits of detection, and robustness which includes an analysis of baseline stability and reproducibility of ligand immobilization using carbamate (carbofuran and carbaryl) and organophosphate (cadusafos, ethoprofos, and chlorpyrifos) insecticide residues. With direct binding analysis, insecticide residues were detected at less than the minimum 0.01 ppm and analyzed in less than 100 sec with a good linear relationship. Based on these results, we find that the binding interaction with active target groups in enzymes using the miniaturized SPR biosensor could detect low concentrations which satisfy the maximum residue limits for pesticide tolerance in Korea, Japan, and the USA.
A compact biosignal monitoring device was developed. Electrodes for electrocardiogram (ECG) and a LED and silicon detector for photoplethysmogram (PPG) were used. A lead II type was arranged for ECG measurement and reflected light was measured at the finger tip for PPG. A single chip microprocessor (model ADuC812, Analog Device) controlled a measurement protocol and processed measured signals. PPG and ECG had a sampling rate of 300 Hz with 8-bit resolution. The maximum power consumption was 100 mW. The microprocessor computed pulse transit time (PTT) between the R-wave of ECG and the peak of PPG. To increase the resolution of PTT, analog peak detectors obtained the peaks of ECG and PPG whose interval was calculated using an internal clock cycle of 921.6 kHz. The device was designed to be operated by 3-volt battery. Biosignals can be measured for $2{\sim}3$ days continuously without the external interruptions and data is stored to an on-board memory. Our system was successfully tested with human subjects.

In this paper, we propose a gaze recognition interface for smart wheelchair. The gaze recognition interface is a user interface which recognize the commands using the gaze recognition and avoid the detected obstacles by sensing the distance through range sensors on the way to driving. Smart wheelchair is composed of gaze recognition and tracking module, user interface module, obstacle detector, motor control module, and range sensor module. The interface in this paper uses a camera with built-in infra red filter and 2 LED light sources to see what direction the pupils turn to and can send command codes to control the system, thus it doesn't need any correction process per each person. The results of the experiment showed that the proposed interface can control the system exactly by recognizing user's gaze direction.
In this paper, we describe the method of non-invasive blood pressure measurement using pulse wave transit time(PWTT). PWTT is a new parameter involved with a vascular that can indicate the change of BP. PWTT is measured by continuous monitoring of ECG and pulse wave. No additional sensors or modules are required. In many cases, the change of PWTT correlates with the change of BP. We measure pulse wave using the photo plethysmograph(PPG) sensor in an earlobe and we measure ECG using the ECG monitoring device our made in the chest. The measurement device for detecting pulse wave consists of infrared LED for transmitted light illumination, pin photodiode as light detector, amplifier and filter. We composed 0.5Hz high pass, 60Hz notch and 10Hz low pass filter. ECG measurement device consists of multiplexer, amplifier, filter, micro-controller and RF module. After amplification and filtering, ECG signal and pulse wave is fed through micro-controller. We performed the initial work towards the development of ambulatory BP monitoring system using PWTT. An earlobe is suitable place to measure PPG signal without the restraint in daily work. From the results, we can know that the dependence of PWTT on BP is almost linear and it is possible to monitoring an individual BP continuously after the individual calibration.
Spraying operation is one of the most essential in an orchard management and it is also hazardous to human body. for automatic and unmanned spraying , an autonomous travelling vehicle is demanded. In this study, a telemeter was developed using infrared beam which could detect trunks and obstacles measure distance and direction from the vehicle travelling in the orchard. The telemeter system was composed of two infrared LED transmitters and receivers, a beam scanning device for continuous object detection , two rotary encoders for angle detector, and a beam level controller for uneven soil surface. The detected distance and direction signal s were sent to personal computer which made for the system display the angular and distance measurements through I/O board. According to a field test in an apple farm, the system detected up to 10m distance under 12 V of transmitted beam intensity, however, it was recommended that the proper beam transmit intensity be 7 v at the 10 m distance, because of the negative effect to human body at 12 V. The error rate of this system was 0.92 % when the actual distance was compared to measured one. The system was feasible at the small error rate. The developed telemeter system was an important part for autonomous travelling vehicle provided the real time object recognition . A direction control system could be constructed suing the system. It is expected that the system could greatly contribute to the development of autonomous farm vehicle.
We report microbolometer characteristic with n-type and p-type amorphous silicon thin film. The n-type and p-type amorphous silicon thin films were made by PECVD. The electrical properties of n-type and p-type a-Si:H thin films were investigated as a function of doping gas flow rate. The doping gas used $B_2H_6/Ar$ (1:9) and $PH_3/Ar$ (1:9). In general, the conductivity of doping a-Si:H thin films increased as doping gas increase but the conductivity of a-Si:H thin films decreased as the doping gas increase because doping gas concentration increase led to dilution gas (Ar) increase as the same time. We fabricated an amorphous silicon microbolometer using surface micromachining technology. The fabricated microbolometer had a negative TCR of 2.3%. The p-type microbolometer had responsivity of $5{\times}10^4V/W$ and high detectivity of $3{\times}10^8cm(Hz)^{1/2}/W$. The p-type microbolometer had more detectivity than n-type for less noise value.

The ocean signal that reaches the detector of an imaging system after multiple interactions with the atmospheric molecules and aerosols was retrieved from the total signal recorded at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). A simple method referred to as 'Path Extraction' applied to the Landsat-TM ocean imagery of turbid coastal water was compared with the conventional dark-pixel subtraction technique. The shape of the path-extracted water-leaving radiance spectrum resembled the radiance spectrum measured in-situ. The path-extraction was also extended to the SeaWiFS ocean color imagery and compared with the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm, which relays on the assumption of zero water leaving radiance at the two NIR wavebands (765 and 865nm). The path-extracted water-leaving radiance was good agreement with the measured radiance spectrum. In contrast, the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm led to essential underestimation of the water-leaving radiance in the blue-green part of the spectrum. The reason is that the assumption of zero water-leaving radiance at 755 and 865nm fails due to backscattering by suspended mineral particles. Therefore, the near infrared channels 765 and 865nm used fur deriving the aerosol information are no longer valid for turbid coastal waters. The path-extraction is identified as a simple and efficient method of extracting the path radiance largely introduced due to light interaction through the complex atmosphere carried several aerosol and gaseous components and at the air-sea interface.interface.
This study was directed to finding an optimum extraction condition of genistein from the S. flavescens with supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent. In this effort, effects of the extraction conditions including pressure, temperature and a co-solvent on the extraction efficiency were investigated. The aqueous ethanol and methanol solutions were used as co-solvents while the tested operating pressure and temperature ranges were from 200 bar to 300 bar and from 308.15 K to 323.15 K, respectively. The concentration of genistein was determined by means of HPLC equipped with a UV detector. From the results, it was observed that an increase in pressure led to the higher extraction efficiency. Further, methanol showed better performance as a co-slovent than ethanol. The DPPH radical scavenging activities were measured to compare antioxidant activities of S. flavescens extracts.
