  • We present the alignment characteristics of LC (liquid crystal) molecules on solution-derived HLO (hafnium lanthanum oxide) films fabricated using IB (ion-beam) irradiation. We then demonstrated that LC molecules can be homogeneously and uniformly aligned on the HLO film irradiated at an IB incident energy of 1.2 keV. Physicochemical analysis methods such as atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to verify the LC alignment mechanism on the IB-irradiated HLO film. In addition, the electro-optical performance of a TN (twisted-nematic) cell fabricated using the IB-irradiated HLO film exhibited characteristics superior to those of the conventional TN cell fabricated using a rubbed polyimide layer.

  • A liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system was used to identify and distinguish oligostilbene diastereoisomers. A polyphenolic extract from Neobalanocarpus heimii known to be rich in oligostilbenes of various degrees of condensation was used as test material. Fourteen oligostilbenes were isolated from this extract on a fully automated semi-preparative HPLC system. Out of these, two pairs of dimers, one pair of trimers, two pairs of tetramers and a group of four tetramers with similar skeleton were identified as diastereoisomers. Their structures and configurations were established by spectroscopic methods. All isolated compounds were subjected to an LC-MS/MS to study their fragmentation patterns. The experiments were performed on a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with electrospray-ionization (ESI) interface in positive mode. MS/MS spectra of each pure compound were recorded by direct infusion in identical conditions and their product ion spectra were analysed. Some subtle yet significant differences were observed between the spectra of oligostilbenes from the various diastereoisomeric series.

  • To achieve the high reliability performance in IPS cell, finding a good combination of Liquid Crystal (LC) materials and Polyimide (PI) is very important as they play a key role in IPS cell. Several LC materials and PIs have been introduced for preparation of their different combinations. Electro optical characteristics such as voltage holding ratio, residual DC and AC image sticking have been investigated for the different system of the LC material and PI in the test panels in an attempt to find the effects on the display reliability performance and image sticking.1)3)

  • TFT LCD mode has some well-documented performance limitations, namely limited viewing angle, inversion of the gray scale levels and poor luminance efficiency because of the necessity of using crossed polarisers attached to the display cell. During the last few years many initiatives have been undertaken to solve these problems by incorporation birefringent films of various designs into the LCD module. Controlling the optical performance of LCDs often requires combination of liquid crystal material properties, cell parameters and optical films. Such optical films have traditionally been made with stretched polymer materials such as polycarbonate, but recently coated liquid crystalline materials have been used to give improved optical films which can greatly enhance the performance of LCDs. We have now developed reactive mesogen materials to add ultra-thin optical layers into the display structure, and these allow the potential for many new applications.

  • We studied the control of pretilt angles for homeotropic aligned nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on SiOx thin film surface by $45^{\circ}$ evaporation method with electron beam system. The uniform vertical LC alignment on. the SiOx thin film surfaces with electron beam evaporation was achieved. It is considered that the LC alignment on SiOx thin film by $45^{\circ}$ electron beam evaporation is attributed to elastic interaction between LC molecules and micro-grooves at the SiOx thin film surface created by evaporation. The pretilt angles of about $3.5^{\circ}$ in aligned NLC on SiOx thin film surfaces by electron beam evaporation of $45^{\circ}$ were measured. Consequently, the high pretilt angles of the NLC on the SiOx thin film by $45^{\circ}$ oblique electron beam evaporation method can be achieved.

  • We have studied the liquid crystal (LC) orientation behavior on the organic hybrid overcoat layer with ion beam irradiation. Excellent LC alignments of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on the ion beam irradiated organic hybrid overcoat layers were observed in various intensities above 600 eV. Pretilt angles of the NLC on the organic hybrid overcoat layers for all ion beam energy intensities were observed from 0.2 to 0.5 degrees. Also, we used the atomic force microscopy (AFM) images for measuring the roughness of the organic hybrid overcoat layers with ion beam irradiation before and after. The surface of organic hybrid overcoat layers was leveled off by the ion beam irradiation. Finally, a good LC alignment thermal stability on the organic hybrid overcoat layer with ion beam irradiation can be achieved.

  • The AOAC Mouse Bioassay method (MBA) has been widely used for routine monitoring of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) for more than 50 years. However, this method has low sensitivity and experiences interference from other components in the extract. Also, ethical issues have been raised against the continued use of this live-mouse assay. To establish an alternative method for PSP analysis, we attempted to develop PSP analysis conditions using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The LC-MS/MS analysis of reference material showed very reasonable accuracy, and the analysis time was just 15 min. However, the recovery rate of toxin spike samples using the LC-MS/MS analysis was 59.4-91.0%. We also attempted to remove the matrix effect using shellfish extracts, but recoveries of C1 and C2 did not improve. A comparison between the results of MBA and LC-MS/MS analysis revealed good correlations, with values of 0.8878 and 0.9211 for oyster and mussel matrices, respectively.

  • A new class of LC-resonator for micro magnetic sensor device was invented and fabricated by means of MEMS technique. The micro LC-resonator consists of a solenoidal micro-inductor with a bundle of soft magnetic microwire cores and a capacitor connected in parallel to the micro-inductor. The core magnetic material is a tiny glass coated $Co_{83.2}B_{3.3}Si_{5.9}Mn_{7.6}$ microwire fabricated by a glasscoated melt spinning technique. The core materials were annealed at various temperatures $150^{\circ}C,\;200^{\circ}C\;,250^{\circ}C\;,$ and $300^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in a vacuum to improve soft magnetic properties. The solenoidal micro-inductors fabricated by MEMS technique were $500{\sim}1,000{\mu}m$ in length with $10{\sim}20$ turns. The changes of inductance as a function of external magnetic field in micro-inductors with properly annealed microwire cores were varied as much as 370%. Since the permeability of ultra soft magnetic microwire is changing rapidly as a function of external magnetic field. The inductance ratio as well as magnetoimpedance ratio (MIR) in a LC-resonator was varied drastically as a function of external magnetic field. The MIR curves can be tuned very precisely to obtain maximum sensitivity. A prototype magnetic sensor device consisting of the developed microinductors with a multivibrator circuit was test successfully.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a SiO thin film. The homogenous alignment can be obtain어 using ion beam (IB) exposure on the SIO thin film, when positive type NLC ($Delta\varepsilon$>0) was injected However, the homeotropic alignment can be obtained using ion beam (IB) exposure on the SiO thin film, when negative type NLC ($\Delta\varepsilon$>0) was injected The LC aligning ability on the SiO thin film depends on the dielectric anisotropy type of LC. It will be discussed.
