  • We propose a power factor correction scheme using a LC resonant circuit in commercial frequency without switching devices. In this method, It makes a sinusoidal wave by widening conduction period using the current resonance in commercial frequency, Hence, the harmonic characteristics can be significantly improved, where the lower order harmonics, such as the fifth and seventh orders are much reduced. The result are confirmed by the theoretical and experimental implementations

  • Recently, there has been increasing demand for power quality in power supply devices. The IEC 61000-3-2 standard requires that the AC / DC power supply for lighting meet the specifications for the power factor (PF) and total waveform distortion (THD). In addition, advanced countries in Europe are regulating the ripple rate as 15 ~ 30% for the flicker phenomenon caused by the change in the amount of foot energy due to the change in current of the output terminal. Therefore, domestic standards and regulations are being updated. This study adopted the Flyback converter to satisfy the PFC standard, and has the circuit first and second insulation function. To reduce the low frequency ripple of the LED current, Flyback, Coupled Inductor, LC parallel resonance filter, LLC resonance filter, and Cuk were simulated by PSIM to mimic each LED driving circuit. A coupled LC resonant circuit with a coupled inductor on the primary side and LC resonance on the secondary side was also proposed for output side ripple reduction.

  • Generally, stray capacitance is unnecessary element of designing circuit, because it can not be predicted by a designer. But we propose LC Resonant Circuit using stray capacitance of transformer. This method proposes miniaturization of circuit, because LC Resonant Circuit can be make simply to using stray capacitance instead of capacitor and size of transformer is reduced. Finally, we research aspect of dielectric heating by change of frequency and output voltage using developed converter.

  • In this paper, bi-directional DC/DC converter using a LC series resonant converter is proposed. A proposed converter is consisted by adding LC series resonant tank into a conventional bi-directional DC/DC converter and performs soft-switching at both boost and buck mode. A LC series resonance occurs in whole operation mode and switching point is determined by specific condition. Through the theoretical analysis and simulation results, operation modes and characteristics of the proposed topology is verified.

  • This paper presents the design and imelementation of an electronic ballast with a passive PFC structure from which acoustic resonance of the metal halide lamp was removed by introducing the frequency modulation(FM) method. The proposed ballast consists of an EMI filter, passive PFC circuit full-bridge inverter, LC resonance type igniter and a circuit for removing acoustic resonance. The FM method solved two problems associated with single frequency driving: variation of the acoustic resonance range according to lamp aging and the acoustic resonance range discrepancy caused by different materials sealed inside the arc tube and their pressures for arc tubes of identical sizes from different manufacturers. Performance of the prototype developed for this study of the electronic ballast for 1[kW] metal halide lamp was verified by evaluating its optical conversion efficiency, input PF, input current THD and power conversion efficiency.

Super-giant Magneto-Impedance Effect of a LC-resonator Using a Glass-Coated Amorphous Microwire

  • A new discovery of the super-giant magneto-impedance (SGMI) effect was found out in a LC-resonator consisted of a glass-coated amorphous $CO_{83.2}B_{3.3}Si_{5.9}Mn_{7.6}$ microwire. The measurement was carried out at high frequency range from 100 MHz up to 1 GHz of an ac-current flowing along the wire and at varying axial dcmagnetic field in its range of $\pm$120 Oe. The wires, about 16${\mu}m$ in diameter, were fabricated by a glass-coated melt spinning technique. The shape of the impedance curves plotted vs. a dc-field is changing dramatically with the frequency. The phase angle was also strongly dependent on this field. The external dc-magnetic field changes the circumferential permeability as well as the penetration depth, both in turn change the impedance of the sample. The drastic increments of SGMI at high frequency can be understood in terms of the LC-resonance phenomena. The sudden change of the phase angle, as large as $180^{\circ}$ evidenced the occurrence of the resonance at a given intensity of the external dc-field. The maximum ratio of SGMI reached in the experiment by precise tuning frequency equals 450,000% at the frequency of around 551.9075 MHz.

  • This paper proposes a new ballast that is ignited by internal LC resonance of buck converter. In order to cancel the steady state current ripple, the proposed ballast utilizes the coupled inductor filter which minimizes the size and weight of the ballast. The operation mode of the proposed ballast is analyzed and the performance of the new ballast is verified by the experimental results from a HOW prototype ballast for metal halide discharge (MHD) lamp.

A New Sustain Driving Method for AC PDP : Charge-Controlled Driving Method

  • A new sustain driving method for the AC PDP is presented. In this driving method, the voltage source is connected to a storage capacitor, this storage capacitor charges an intermediate capacitor through LC resonance, and the panel is charged from the intermediate capacitor indirectly. In this way, the current flowing into the AC PDP when the sustain discharge occurs is reduced because the current is indirectly supplied from a capacitor, a limited source of charge. Thus, the input power to the output luminance efficiency is improved. Since the voltage supplied to the storage capacitor is doubled through LC resonance, this method call drive an AC PDP with a voltage source of about half of the voltage necessary in the conventional driving methods. The experiments showed that this charge-controlled driving method could drive ail AC PDP with a voltage source of as low as 107V. Using a panel of the conventional structure, luminous efficiency of 1.28 lm/W was achieved.
