  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) for pulmonary function in normal-weight and obese women. Methods: Data from women aged ${\geq}40$ years were obtained from the 2011 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Obesity was measured by BMI and WC and pulmonary function was measured by forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second ($FEV_1$), and a ratio between forced expiratory volume in 1 second ($FEV_1$/FVC). Multiple linear regression analysis was performed for assessment of the association between FVC, $FEV_1$, $FEV_1$/FVC and obesity variables. Results: BMI showed positive association with FVC, $FEV_1$, $FEV_1$/FVC, and WC showed positive association with $FEV_1$ and $FEV_1$/FVC in normal-weight women. BMI and WC showed negative association with FVC, $FEV_1$ in obese women. A 1 unit increase in BMI showed an association with a 25-mL reduction in FVC and a 19-mL reduction in $FEV_1$. A 1-cm increase in WC showed an association with a 6-mL reduction in FVC and a 4-mL reduction in $FEV_1$. Conclusions: BMI and WC showed negative association with pulmonary function in obese adult women. Therefore, obese women with reduced pulmonary function should be encouraged to lose weight for improvement of their pulmonary function.

  • This study was done to investigate the relationship between ultrasonograph fat density (ULFD) using objective measurement and serum enzymes for testing liver function in 101 healthy adults(43 males and 58 females). Average serum enzyme activities in males and females were GOT27.111U/L and 22.46IU/L, GPT 34.06IU/L and 18.501U/L, and ${\gamma}$-GTP 37.67IU/L and 17.201U/L, respectively. Males showed significantly higher activities of GPT and ${\gamma}$-GTP than females. ULFD of the obese group (BMI$\geq$25) was significantly higher than that of the nonobese group. GOT, GPT, and ${\gamma}$-GTP tended to be high in the obese group. GPT and ${\gamma}$-GTP of the high TG group (TG$\geq$170) tended to be markedly high for males, but not for females. GPT was positively correlated with ULFD, body weight , and weight-to-height, ratio, and ${\gamma}$-GTP was positively correlated with body weight, weight-to-height ratio. BNI, and KI. ULFD and ${\gamma}$-GTP were positively correlated with serum TG. These results suggests that , among serum enzymes for testing liver function, GPT has a close relationship with ULFD using objective measurement, while GOT does not. Also , ${\gamma}$-GTP has a close relationship with parameters for obesity.

  • Characteristics of control system design using Universal Learning Network (U.L.N.) are that a system to be controlled and a controller are both constructed by U.L.N. and that the controller is best tuned through learning. U.L.N has the same generalization ability as N.N.. So the controller constructed by U.L.N. is able to control the system in a favorable way under the condition different from the condition of the control system in learning stage. But stability can not be realized sufficiently. In this paper, we propose a robust control method using U.L.N. and second order derivatives of U.L.N.. The proposed method can realize better performance and robustness than the commonly used Neural Network. Robust control considered here is defined as follows. Even though initial values of node outputs change from those in learning, the control system is able to reduce its influence to other node outputs and can control the system in a preferable way as in the case of no variation. In order to realize such robust control, a new term concerning the variation is added to a usual criterion function. And parameter variables are adjusted so as to minimize the above mentioned criterion function using the second order derivatives of criterion function with respect to the parameters. Finally it is shown that the controller constricted by the proposed method works in an effective way through a simulation study of a nonlinear crane system.

  • In low current injection level, the output signal of the 12 L is damaged and disturbed by the external loads (capacitance, resistance, current). Thus the uncertainty of the circuit can be increased .'This paper makes an analysis on the influences which the external loads have upon the 12 L-inverter function. It compares and analyzes the calculated result and measured result about the variation of rise time and fall time by means of computer simula-tions and experiments.

  • Let $T_l$ be a transformation on the interval [-1, 1] defined by Chebyshev polynomial of degree $l(l{\geq}2)$, i.e., $T_l(cos{\theta})=cos(l{\theta})$. In this paper, we consider $T_l$ as a measure preserving transformation on [-1, 1] with an invariant measure $\frac{1}{\sqrt[\pi]{1-x^2}}dx$. We show that If f(x) is a nonconstant step function with finite k-discontinuity points with k < l-1, then it satisfies the Central Limit Theorem. We also give an explicit method how to check whether it satisfies the Central Limit Theorem or not in the cases of general step functions with finite discontinuity points.

  • This work is a continuation of our investigations for p-adic analogue of the alternating form Dirichlet L-functions $$L_E(s,{\chi})={\sum\limits_{n=1}^{\infty}}{\frac{(-1)^n{\chi}(n)}{n^s}},\;Re(s)>0$$. Let Lp,E(s, t; χ) be the p-adic Euler L-function of two variables. In this paper, for any α ∈ ℂp, |α|p ≤ 1, we give a power series expansion of Lp,E(s, t; χ) in terms of the variable t. From this, we derive a power series expansion of the generalized Euler polynomials with negative index, that is, we prove that $$E_{-n,{\chi}}(t)={\sum\limits_{m=0}^{\infty}}\(\array{-n\\m}\)E_{-(m+n),{\chi}^{t^m}},\;n{\in}{\mathbb{N}}$$, where t ∈ ℂp with |t|p < 1. Some further properties for Lp,E(s, t; χ) has also been shown.

  • Using the Binet's formula, we show that the quotient related ratio $l_{1(x)}\;\neq\;0$ for the eventually periodic continued fraction x. Using this ratio, we also show that the derivative of the Minkowski question mark function at the simple periodic continued fraction is infinite or 0. In particular, $l_1({[\bar{1}]})$ = 2 log $\gamma$ where $\gamma$ is the golden mean $(1+\sqrt{5})/2$ and the derivative of the Minkowski question mark function at the simple periodic continued fraction $[\bar{1}]$ is infinite.

  • Classification is an important research field in pattern recognition with high-dimensional predictors. The support vector machine(SVM) is a penalized feature selector and classifier. It is based on the hinge loss function, the non-convex penalty function, and the smoothly clipped absolute deviation(SCAD) suggested by Fan and Li (2001). We developed the algorithm for the multiclass SVM with the SCAD penalty function using the local quadratic approximation. For multiclass problems we compared the performance of the SVM with the $L_1$, $L_2$ penalty functions and the developed method.
