English /s/ and Korean sh/-/s*/ Contrast in Seoul and Busan Dialects: A Study of Category Solidity

  • The primary goal of the current study was to examine category solidity of Korean alveolar fricatives in the Busan and Seoul dialects of Korean. Considering the common belief of $/s^h/-/s^*/$ neutralization in Kyungsang speech, plain $/s^h/$ and fortis $/s^*/$ fricatives of Busan speakers were examined against the same fricatives of Seoul speakers. Perceptual distance between Korean $/s^h/$ and $/s^*/$ on the one hand and English /s/ on the other was investigated by use of across-linguistic mapping method. Two experiments of a perceptual mapping task of English /s/ to Korean $/s^h/$ and $/s^*/$ and a $/s^*/$-production task were conducted on users of the Busan and Seoul dialects of Korean. The results from the perception and production experiments suggested that at a micro-level, younger Busan speakers have less solid category stability for Korean $/s^*/$ compared with Seoul speakers, although their production of $/s^h/$ and $/s^*/$ was as highly distinctive from each other as that of Seoul speakers.

Characterization of Physiological Functionalities in Korean Traditional Liquors (전통 민속주의 생리기능성 탐색)

  • Some physiological functionalities of Korean traditional liquors were characterized. Inhibitory activity against angiotensin-converting enzyme was 87.2% in Chunla-Do So-ju, 85.2% in Kyunggi-Do 2D-ju, and 85.9% in Chungcheong-Do DO-ju, Kyunggi-Do HO-ju, SA-ju, and Chunla-Do SO-ju had high fibrinolytic activity. SOD-like activity and electron donating ability were 70.7% in Kyunggi-Do OK-ju and 85.5% in Chungcheong-Do SA-ju, restectively. The highest tyrosinase inhibitory activity was shown in Kyungsang-Do KO-ju. High nitrite scavenging activity was detected in Chunla-Do To-ju.

An Exploratory Study on the Brand Architecture and the In-house Brand Differentiation Strategy of Korean Apparel Enterprises (국내 의류 기업의 브랜드 아키텍쳐 및 기업 내 브랜드 차별화 전략에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • This study is an exploratory research on the brand architecture of Korean apparel enterprises and the differentiation strategy among in-house competing brands. For data analysis, secondary data was used. 20 apparel enterprises were used as the subjects. The results are as following. First, as a result of brand architecture composition, apparel enterprises used the strategy that initially paved the way launching several brands in a specific item category and after that diversified to other categories. Most enterprises used the multi-brand strategy operating plural brands in a same zoning. The terms for launching succeeding brands were about $1{\sim}5$ years. Second, as a result of analysing the cases which several brands competes within a same zoning, all the posterior brands had some differences from the prior ones. The most frequent differentiation factor was price. Concept, target age, and distribution channel followed. The order of the factors was somewhat different among the item categories. The differentiation strategy among in-house competing brands meant that the enterprises manage plural brands in a same zoning for the growth of whole market share instead of the direct competition among in-house brands. The results of this study can suggest a growth direction to the enterprises planning to launch new brands.

  • The content systems of Shinjung Tongguk Yoji Sungnam(신증동국여지승람, A Korean Geography Published in Chosen Dynasty) consist of 26 items and the main subject comprises administration, military and geography, This book does not suggest a simple geography but a comprehensive bibliography as an administrative guide book of a nation or a military operation manual. In particular, this book is made much of as a more valuable material in elevating the quality of the geographic book since it contained a 'Cheyong(제영)' item and reinforced the fields of humanities which could not be found out in other geography. The verses of Cheyong are recorded in the documents in the Chungchong, Kyungsang and Chulla Provinces, and these recorded verses In the tree provinces are more than half of the whole country's. The objects of recitation in the these verses are related to such natural phenomena and historic relics as the mountains, the livers, the wails and the royal tombs.

Genotypic and Geographical Variations of $\beta$amylase Isozyme in Soybean Land Races by Isoelectric Focusing (IEF)

  • The experiment was carried out to study the variations and geographical distribution of $\beta$-amylase isozyme by isoelectric focusing (IEF) within Korean, Chinese and Japanese soybean land races. In pH 3-10 gel of IEF, the amylase of soybean accessions was separated into low pI group isozymes (TEX>${$Sp_1$}^b$) and high pI group isozymes(${$Sp_1$}^a$). In pH4-6.5 gel, isoelectric points were at 5.07, 5.15, 5.25, 5.40, and 5.94, and h, j, and k bands also were found. The distribution of Sp$_1$$^{a}$ allele (high pI type) was 29.3% in soybean accessions from Korea, 10.1 % in those from China, and 6.9% in Japanese accessions. The percentage of ${$Sp_1$}^a$) allele was the highest in soybean accessions from Kyungsang province (35 %) in Korea, then central China (32 %) in China, and Honshu (10%) in Japan.

  • This study has investigated a scientific approach to the manufacture of Yackwa, made by different frying conditions and has assessed texture characteristics through sensory evaluation and instrumental test. A standard Yackwa was made by frying at 150$^{\circ}C$ for 8 minutes and then soaking for 10 minutes in the newly developed syrup whose viscosity and sweetness were similar to expensive honey. The mixing ratio of the developed syrup was corn syrup: sugar: dextrose=32 : 1.5 : 1 (by weight), and me syrup was double-boned in a water bath for 20 minutes and men cooled to 25 C. As me results of sensory evaluation and instrumental test for Yackwa made by various frying conditions, the lower the frying temperature or me longer the frying time was the higher values of hardness and fracturability, while adhesiveness was the lower in almost all conditions. In the sensory evaluation of Yackwa with the similar outer color, mere were significant differences in me inner color, Crispiness and levels of rising and cracking.

An Experimental Study of Korean Dialectal Speech (한국어 방언 음성의 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, several theories on the digital speech signal processing expanded the communication boundary between human beings and machines drastically. The aim of this study is to collect dialectal speech in Korea on a large scale and to establish a digital speech data base in order to provide the data base for further research on the Korean dialectal and the creation of value-added network. 528 informants across the country participated in this study. Acoustic characteristics of vowels and consonants are analyzed by Power spectrum and Spectrogram of CSL. Test words were made on the picture cards and letter cards which contained each vowel and each consonant in the initial position of words. Plot formants were depicted on a vowel chart and transitions of diphthongs were compared according to dialectal speech. Spectral times, VOT, VD, and TD were measured on a Spectrogram for stop consonants, and fricative frequency, intensity, and lateral formants (LF1, LF2, LF3) for fricative consonants. Nasal formants (NF1, NF2, NF3) were analyzed for different nasalities of nasal consonants. The acoustic characteristics of dialectal speech showed that young generation speakers did not show distinction between close-mid /e/ and open-mid$/\epsilon/$. The diphthongs /we/ and /wj/ showed simple vowels or diphthongs depending to dialect speech. The sibilant sound /s/ showed the aspiration preceded to fricative noise. Lateral /l/ realized variant /r/ in Kyungsang dialectal speech. The duration of nasal consonants in Chungchong dialectal speech were the longest among the dialects.

  • This study analyzes the locution of television home shopping show hosts for apparel products with a focus on the selling points and vocabulary use. A qualitative content analysis was conducted for 15 recorded home shopping shows selling women's overcoats and jackets. The results are as follows. First, 8 dimensions of selling points were revealed: Promotions, brand popularities, the experiences of shopping hosts, fashion trend information, conformity motivation and suggestion, intangible attributes, tangible attributes, and compared/leading differences. The most frequent selling point was tangible attributes. Following this were, promotions, conformity motivation and suggestion, compared/leading differences, intangible attributes, brand popularity, the experiences of the shopping hosts, and fashion trend information in order. The selling points were almost proper to decrease the perceived risks of home shopping consumers. Second, shopping hosts frequently used the clothing terms without any expatiations and used loan words (foreign language terms) instead of the direct Korean translations. In the conclusion, the development of a marketing strategy focusing on shopping host management is suggested.

Validity of the Conceptual Structure of Clothing Shopping Orientation -Focused on the Specific Structure by the Gender- (의복 쇼핑 성향의 개념적 구조 모형에 대한 타당성 확인 연구 -성별에 따른 세부 구조 차이를 중심으로-)

  • The purposes of this study are to verify the validity of the conceptual structure of clothing shopping orientation(CSO) developed in the previous research, and to explore the difference of CSO structure between male and female consumer groups. For those purposes, data of 499 male and female consumers were collected. Confirmatory factor analysis, ANOVA, and simultaneous factor analysis were used for data analysis. The results are as follows. First, as a result of confirmatory factor analysis, the validity of conceptual structure of CSO was verified. Second, as a result of ANOVA, male and female showed significantly different CSO at the lower-dimensions level, and as a result of simultaneous factor analysis, male and female showed significantly different relationships between dimensions within the structure. This means that the CSOs of both male and female can be explained by the same CSO structure model, but the specific relationships between CSO dimensions are different by the gender of consumers. Finally, directions for fashion marketing mix concerning the CSO structures of male and female were suggested.

  • The relative toxicity of some of the insecticides which have been used for the control of paddy rice insect pests in Korea was evaluated in the laboratory with the brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens, and a predaceous paddy spider Pirata subpiraticus. In order of the relative toxicity (LD5O value to spider/LD50 value to BPH) were PAP (0.4), MPP(0.1), MEP(1.8), diazinon(2.8), carbofuran(7.5), NAC(11.3), BPMC(17.5), Pyridaphenthion(35.9) and MIPC(65.7). MIPC and Pyridaphenthion were considered as having the desirable selective toxicity for the spider and the BPH.
