The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of social support on type 2 diabetes by classifying it into diabetes and impaired fasting blood sugar, a pre-diabetic state. Subjects of this study were 22,846 adults aged 30 years or above who agreed and registered to participate in the "Korean Health Examine Cohort (KOEX)" study that simultaneously collects questionnaires and biological samples at 8 university hospitals around the nation. Normal fasting blood sugar was defined as below 100 mg/dL, and impaired fasting blood sugar was defined as 100~125 mg/dL. Diagnosis of diabetes was defined as fasting blood sugar of 126 mg/dL or above, diagnosis by a doctor, or medication of insulin or oral hypoglycemic agent. Social support groups were divided into 4 groups, and Group 1 (G1) had high positive support and low negative support. This is the reference group with the highest social support. During multivariate analysis, female group (G3) that had high positive support and high negative support showed prevalence of impaired fasting blood sugar 1.19 times higher (95% CI = 1.02~1.41) than G1. As this study confirmed that social support increases fasting blood sugar of women after correction for socioeconomic status, health behavior, and biological and medical variables, it implies the importance of social relations such as social support in addition to management of personal risk factors for prevention of type 2 diabetes.
Purpose: The study was conducted to identify the relationship between subjective family class and suicidal ideation and to determine the double mediating effect of social support and sense of coherence on their relationship. Methods: Secondary analysis of data from 2015 Korean Psycho-social Anxiety which was a population-based representative was performed. Double mediating effects of social support and sense of coherence on suicidal ideation were analyzed using the PROCESS macro (model 6) with bootstrapping methods. Results: Subjective family class directly influenced social support (β=.20, p<.001) and sense of coherence (β=.10, p<.001). Subjective family class directly influenced suicide ideation (β=-.08, p<.001). Sense of coherence was directly influenced by social support (β=.28, p<.001). Suicide ideation was indirectly influenced by subjective family class through social support (β=-.22, p<.001) and sense of coherence (β=-.36, p=.001). The size of direct effect of subjective family class on suicide ideation was 0.24 and the total size of indirect effect was 0.12. Conclusion: Intervention to improve social support and sense of coherence is needed to prevent the suicide among adolescents.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the causal relations among attachment, and social support influencing problem behavior in middle school students. The data contains 482 middle school students. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS statistical package for correlation analysis and structural equation modeling. Study results were as follows. The correlations among attachment, social support and problem behavior were significant. The results of the structural equation modeling show that students' social support had direct positive influence on problem behavior, but students' attachment didn't have direct positive influence on problem behavior. That is to say, social support mediated the effect of attachment on problem behavior. These results imply that perceived attachment, and social support influence adolescents' problem behavior. Results suggest that programs that promote social support should be given to reduce problem behaviors of middle school students.
We tried to look for parenting stress and social support of parents who look after children with mental retardation, intellectual disability, physical disability, and deafness. We also tried to know type and severity of parenting stress and inform a necessity of a resource and social support through the study. We subjected parents who have children with disability and visit 7 medical centers to treat in the 4 cities. The parents filled out the questionnaire. We analysed the scale of parenting stress and social support using Likert 5 point scale. As a result of parenting stress and social support according to general characteristics by type of disability, parenting stress was very high regardless of type of disability. However, the parents who have children with disability had lower social support. In detail, the parents who have children with mental retardation had the highest parenting stress, and the parents who have children with deafness had the lowest parenting stress. In the social support, the parents who have children with mental retardation received high social support, and the parents who have children with intellectual disability received low social support.
The purposes of this study were to find correlation between family abuse experience, family stress, social support, family resiliency and happiness in university students, and to explore the mediating role of social support and family resiliency between family abuse experience, family stress and happiness. The subjects were 295 university students. The data were analyzed by means of frequency analysis, Pearson's correlation and structural equation modeling with SPSS and AMOS. Instruments were Lee's(2010) Happiness Scale for university students, Strauss'(1988) CTSP(Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale), McCubbin's(1981) FILE(Family Inventory of Life Events and Changes), Yu's(2004) Family resiliency of Family Health Scale and Park's(1985) Social Support Scale. The major findings were as follows; Family abuse experience was positively correlated with family stress and negatively correlated with social support, family resiliency and happiness. Family stress was negatively correlated with family resiliency. Social support and family resiliency were positively correlated with happiness. Family abuse experience positively influenced family stress and negatively influenced social support and family resiliency. Social support positively influenced family resiliency and happiness. Family stress negatively influenced family resiliency. Family resiliency positively influenced happiness. Thus education program and counseling should be provided to increase happiness and family resiliency, and social support should be provide to increase the quality of life for university students.
This research sought to investigate the relationships among self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence of women engineering students. First, women undergraduate students' differences respecting self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence were examined. Second, the relationships among self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence were identified in terms of sub-factors of those three variables. Third, the effects of social support and interpersonal competence, as perceived by women undergraduate students, on self-leadership were explored. A total of 398 women undergraduate students from three universities in Korea responded to survey based on a three-variables scale. The findings were that, firstly, women engineering students scored lower in all of the three variables including self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence, and that these major differences were statistically significant. Secondly, a positive correlation among self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence was identified. Thirdly, it was determined that self-leadership was affected significantly by social support and interpersonal competence. The practical implications of these findings are discussed herein, with particular attention on education for promotion of self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence.
The related factors of the quality of life (QOL) in stroke patients was identified empirically. The subjects were 254 stroke patients who were discharged and taken follow-up care at the outpatient department. In this model, the physical, psychological, and social status were assumed to affect the QOL. And the social support was assumed to moderate these effects. NIH stroke state, ADL, and IADL were used to measure the physical status. Using CES-D, the psychological status was measured. The social status was defined as the job change after stroke attack. The satisfaction with the care by primary caregivers, significant others, and health professionals was measured as the social support. To identify the effect of the physical, psychological, and social status on the QOL, multiple regression analysis was carried out. The psychological and social status were found to be the significant predictors of the QOL(R2=0.27, p=0.00). Next, to identify the moderating effect of the social support, the subjects were divided into two groups, that is, the low social support group and the high social support group. It is found that the predicting variance is different between these two groups. In the low social support group, the psychological, social, and physical status predicted as much as 42% of the QOL. On the contrary, the psychological status predicted only 8% of the QOL in the high social support group. So it is concluded that the social support moderates the effects of the physical, psychological, and social status on QOL. Finally, to identify the social support which moderates those effects, the social support was divided into three classes. Each social support class was divided into the low and high social support group again. In the every class of social support, the difference between two groups was also identified. So the model of the QOL is recommended for the framework of the care for the stroke patients. Also these results support the claim that the long-term facilities for stroke patients are necessary.
In general, grandparents have been very influential resource persons on their grandchildren's gross development. Nevertheless it has been difficult to find many empirical studies that focused on the specific competence of grandchildren and showed strong evidence in its regard. Therefore this study was intented to investigate the influence of grandparents' social support on their grandchildren's social competence in the light of grandparent's social support on their grandchildren's social competence in the light of grandchildren-grandparent relationship. Among them, 94 children were related with grandfathers, 167 children with grandmothers 101 children with maternal grandfathers and 182 children with maternal grandmothers. The questionaire was used as a methodological instrument and the statistics such as frequency, percentile, mean, Pearson's correlation, One-Way ANOVA and Scheff test were used for data analysis. The findings were as follows : 1) Children's affectional intimacy to grandparent was positively correlated with perceived grandparent's social support. 2) Perceived grandparent's social support was affirmatively correlated with grandparent-mother relationship, that is, grandchildren-grandparent relationship was mediated by mother. And 3) children who more perceived grandparent's social support than less perceived grandparent's social support were highly rated I social competence by teacher. In the result, children emotionally, informatively and instrumentally supported by paternal or maternal grandparents showed high social competence defined supported by paternal or maternal grandparents showed high social competence defined as interpersonal relationship ability on the significant level respectively.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate the relationships between job stress or social support and job satisfaction, and the function of social support, theoretically considered to mediate the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction. Methods: After obtaining informed consent from participants, data were collected from 122 taxi drivers. Gamma was used for testing of the first and second hypotheses. Partial Gamma was used to test the third hypothesis. Patterns of elaboration described by Babbie (1986) were selected for interpretation of the relationship among the three variable analyses. Results: First, a negative relationship was observed between job stress and job satisfaction (Gamma=-.543, p=.001) and a positive relationship was observed between social support and job satisfaction (Gamma=.741, p<.001). Second, when controlling for social support, the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction showed a decrease under conditions of both low and high social support. As for the mediating effect of social support, job stress was found to affect social support and social support was found to affect job satisfaction. Conclusion: The results showed that social support had a mediating effect between job stress and job satisfaction. Therefore, development and implementation of appropriate social support interventions is needed in order to reduce job stress and promote job satisfaction.
