  • Floating quantifiers(FQs) in English exhibit both universal and language specific proper- ties This paper discusses how such syntactic and semantic characteristics can be explained in terms of a constraint-based, lexical approach to the floating quanti- fer construction within the framework of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar(HPSG). Based on the assumption and FQs are base-generated VP modifiers, this paper proposes and account in which the semantic contribution of FQs consists of a "lexically retrieved" universal quantifier taking scope over the VP meaning.P meaning.

  • Implementing the linguistic theories on computer, we resolve the problems for restrictions of computer and increase processing efficiency for systemization not for linguistic theory itself. Thus, we modify the grammatical theory to be applied to systems. This paper reports the various problems about constructing dictionaies, defining rules, and appling universal principles and metarules, which is caused to implement the systems based on GPSG. In semantic interpretations, logical expressions which correspond Montague grammar are acquired, and we make a rule connect with several logical expressions. And we show the efficiency of the this method through implementing parser.

  • 본 연구에서는 기존의 전통적인 IVR 시스템이 갖는 제약을 해결할 수 있는 XML 포맷을 가지는 VoireXML 문서를 브라우징할 수 있는 Voice 브라우저를 설계ㆍ구현하였다. VoiceXML로 기술된 다이얼로고를 VoiceXML 인터프리터를 통하여 해석하고 추출된 폼을 FIA로 해석하게 하였으며 음성인식 엔진의 컴포넌트를 이용하여 Grammar 컴파일 및 음성 입ㆍ출력이 가능하도록 하였다. 본 연구의 브라우저를 기반으로 하는 시스템은 음성 언어 어플리케이션을 개발할 시에 음성 인식과 같은 복잡한 기술을 이용하지 않아도 되며 현재 웹 개발의 이점을 이용할 수 있다.

  • Motivated by the previously reported results, this work attempts to provide fresh refinements to both vector and numerical radius inequalities by providing a refinement to the well known Buzano's inequality which as a consequence yielded another refinement of the Cauchy-Schwartz (CS) inequality. Utilizing the new refinements of the Buzano's and Cauchy-Schwartz inequalities, we proceed to obtain various vector and numerical radius type inequalities. Methods used in the paper are standard for the operator theory inequality topics.

  • Database Semantics (DBS) attempts to provide a comprehensive and integrated approach to human communication which seeks theory-implementation transparency. Two key components of DBS are Word bank as a data structure and left-Associative Grammar (LAG) as an algorithm. This study aims to provide a pilot implementation of Korean in DBS. First, it is shown how the three separate modules of grammar in DBS, namely, Hear, Think, and Speak, combine to form an integrated system that simulates a cognitive agent by making use of a simple Korean sentence as an example. Second, we provide a detailed analysis of the structure in Korean that is a characteristic of Korean involving numerals, classifiers, and nouns, thereby illustrating how DBS can be applied to Korean. We also discuss an issue raised in the literature concerning a problem that arises when we try to apply the LAG algorithm to the analysis of head-final language like Korean, and then discuss some possible solution to the problem.

Characteristics of Narrative Writing in Normal Aging: Story Grammar and Syntactic Structure (노년층의 글쓰기 특성 -이야기문법과 구문구조)

  • The elderly often produce irrelevant speech and get off-topic more easily than the young; the former also has difficulty generating fewer syntactic structures and makes errors of grammatical morphemes. In particular, the elderly might have more difficulty writing since it requires more complex cognitive processes than storytelling. The participants in this study were 32 young people and 32 older people. They were asked to write a short story of Korean fairy tale('Heungbu Nolbu'). The data was analyzed in narrative composition and syntactic structures. The study revealed the following: First, in composition aspects, the elderly group showed significantly lower total number of story grammar and episodes. In addition, the elderly produced more off topic statements. Second, in syntactic aspects, although there was no significant difference in the number of producing complex sentences between two groups, the elderly group generated more inadequate cohesive devices and used fewer relative and adverbial clauses. These findings suggest that the elderly have a tendency to perform tasks by producing more off-topic statements and shows decreasing coherence by using lower number of relative and adverbial clauses. However, this study also uncovers that the elderly were able to write more complex and longer sentences using visual feedback.

Quality Assessment of the Abstracts of the Original Articles (1997) in the Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine (예방의학회지(1997년)에 게재된 원저논문 영문초록의 질 평가)

  • Objectives. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality of abstracts of original articles. Methods. This subjects selected total 63 abstracts of the original articles of the Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine in 1997. The quality of abstracts was measured against a checklist of evaluation criteria, which were divided into eight categories and the numbers of inappropriate words (including grammar) according to criterionbased survey. A score for each abstract was obtained by dividing the number of criteria presented by the number applicable. The overall mean score was also determined. Results. The overall mean score of abstract quality was 0.55 out of 1. Of the abstracts subject selection 83% didn't include specific technical descriptors. Of those that gave conclusions 92% didn't address study limitations and 78% made no recommendations for future study. The overall mean number of inappropriate usage of words (including grammar) per abstract was 14.1. The overall mean number of English words was 283. In the multiple regression analyses, the research career of the first author and the number of English words to the number of inappropriate usage of words were statistically significant. Also, in the secondary regression model, the number of English words to the quality score of abstract was only statistically significant. Conclusions. Most of the abstracts provided some information pertaining to each evaluation criterion. However, they did not provide sufficient details to enhance the reader's understanding of the article. On the basis of the study the abstracts need improvement in its description of the reported subject selection, statements of limitations and recommendations, etc. The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine will recommend a proposal for more informative abstracts in Korean J Prey Med and will take into consideration the introduction of foreign review of abstracts. Future studies should address these issues and compare the quality of abstracts between different journals and their time of publication.

Research on Form-focused Instruction in Korean Language Education: A Critical Review (한국어교육에서의 형태초점교수법 연구: 비판적 검토)

  • The purpose of this study is to review empirical research on Form-focused instruction (FFI) in Korean language education from a critical perspective to better understand the effectiveness of FFI. To achieve this goal, several databases were searched to locate relevant experimental and quasi experimental studies published in peer-reviewed journals. Out of 66 studies collected, 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. The studies were then analyzed in terms of subjects, target grammar, treatment, measurement, and the learning outcomes of different techniques. In general, several types of FFI techniques had positive effects on helping learners acquire Korean as a second or foreign language. The results of the study will provide a conceptual framework which identifies the major factors affecting the effectiveness of FFI. The results will also be able to inform future meta-analytical research of existing studies.

  • The early stage of Korean language education was to understand grammar. However, recent Korean language education aims to improve expressive ability for smooth communication. Hence, educational drama for education has gained attention as one of the effective ways of improving communication skills. Educational drama provides an actual conversational situation in which one can use appropriate words and grammar depending on the situation. Non-verbal expression such as body language and facial expression could be picked up so one also improves one's communicative abilities naturally. This means that educational drama shares Korean language education's goal of improving communicative ability. Moreover, the student becomes the core of the activity and finds solutions through cooperation with others, and this also helps improve social skills and self-esteem. This thesis covers methods of having interviews, re-writing texts to scripts, writing up post-script by imagining the following text, role-playing, and improving expressive ability by debating educational theatrical techniques. To make these activities successful, good quality VOD and learning materials shall be developed and used. Also, efficient training programs shall be created so that teachers make use of what they learn and improve their teaching skills.
