Effects of duck farming restriction measures on the incidence of avian influenza

  • Duck farming restriction refers to a program in which duck farms suspend their operations for a certain period at times when the risk of avian influenza (AI) is high and receive compensation from the Korean government. This study analyzed the effect of this duck farming restriction on the incidence of AI using data on regional AI incidence rates, the program participation rate, and characteristics of poultry farming in 2016 (before the implementation of the restriction), as well as data from 2020 and 2021 (when new AI outbreaks occurred). In this study, the treatment group was divided into five subgroups according to the policy participation rate and a difference-in-difference (DID) estimation was conducted using certain covariates, in this case the average number of ducks raised, the land area, the number of high-susceptibility farms, the number of low-susceptibility farms, the average number of farms within a 3 km radius, the average distance to the nearest farm, and a year dummy. The results showed that when more than 30% of all duck farms in a region participated in the farming restriction, it had a statistically significant effect on the incidence of AI. Specifically, when more than 30, 40, 50, and 60% of all duck farms participated in the farming restriction, the AI incidence rate decreased by 0.7184, 1.0025, 1.5844, and 1.5843%p, respectively.

Investigation of Reasons for Culling in Chungcheong Dairy Herds

  • This study was conducted to investigate reasons for culling of Chungcheong dairy herds and to investigate the relationships between cow parity, interval from calving to culling, or season and culling reasons. Lactation data from 826 cows on 9 dairy farms from 2013 to 2015, including reasons for culling, dates of birth, last calving, and culling, were analyzed. The overall culling rate was 29.8% (246/826), with mammary problems (23.2%) being the most prevalent reason for culling, followed by infertility (14.2%) and downer cow syndrome (11.0%). The culling rate varied among farms (18.8-43.1%, p < 0.05), but was greater in parity $4{\leq}(40.7%)$ than parities 1, 2, or 3 (17.9-23.6%), whereas the rate was less frequent during mid lactation (21.1%) than in early (36.2%) or late (42.7%) lactation. Moreover, the culling rate was greater during summer (35.8%) than other seasons (20.3-23.2%). Mammary problems, downer cow syndrome, and metabolic disorders were the more common reasons for culling during early lactation, whereas infertility was predominant during late lactation. Our data show that the culling rate in Chungcheong dairy herds was associated with cow parity, interval from calving to culling, and season, with the main reasons for the removal of cows from dairy herds being mammary problems, infertility, and downer cow syndrome.

Analysis of virulence traits of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bovine mastitis in semi-intensive and family dairy farms

  • Background: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the main microorganisms that causes bovine mastitis, and its well-known virulence characteristics and interactions with the environment are used to aid the design of more efficient therapies. Objectives: To determine whether the virulence traits, such as antibiotic resistance and biofilm-forming and internalization abilities, of S. aureus isolated from bovine mastitis are related to dairy production system types. Methods: The study was performed in the Mexican states of Guanajuato and Michoacan. Semi-intensive dairy farms (SIDFs) and family dairy farms (FDFs) (454 and 363 cows, respectively) were included. The 194 milk samples from mastitis affected quarters were collected and 92 strains of S. aureus were isolated and identified by biochemical and molecular tests. Antibiotic resistance, biofilm and internalization assays were performed on 30 randomly selected isolated strains to determine virulence traits, and these strains were equally allocated to the 2 dairy production systems. Results: All 30 selected strains displayed a high degree of resistance (50%-91.7%) to the antibiotics tested, but no significant difference was found between SIDF and FDF isolates. S. aureus strains from SIDFs had an average biofilm forming capacity of up to 36% (18.9%-53.1%), while S. aureus strains from FDFs registered an average of up to 53% (31.5%-77.8%) (p > 0.05). Internalization assays revealed a higher frequency of internalization capacity for strains isolated from FDFs (33.3%) than for those isolated from SIDFs (6.7%) (p > 0.05). fnbpA gen was detected in 46.6% of FDF strains and 33.3% of SIDF strains, and this difference was significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings show that the virulence traits of S. aureus isolates analyzed in this study, depend significantly on several factors, such as phenotype, genotype, and environmental conditions, which are significantly related to dairy production system type and daily management practices.

국내 사육 유우군의 마이코플라스마균 유방감염에 관한 연구 (Epidemiological studies on Mycoplasma mastitis of dairy cows in South Korea)

  • This study was performed to investigate Mycoplasma (M) spp. infection status of dairy cow in South Korea. Among 8,485 bulk tank milk collected from dairy farms of the 5 areas, 26 samples (0.30%) were positive for Mycoplasma by direct culture method. The isolation rates of Mycoplasma spp. according to the areas were 0.51% in Kyonggi, 0.16% in Cholla, 0.23% in Gyoungsang, 0.12% in Chungchong, and 0.08% in Kangwon. In the species identification test by indirect immunoperoxidase test, 16 out of 26 isolates were identified as M bovis (61.53%), M bovigenitalium (23.07%), M californicum (7.69%), M alkalescens and Acholeplasma laidlawii (3.84%), respectively. The isolation rate of Mycoplasma spp. from 208 quarter milk samples in culling cows due to severe clinical mastitis was 3.0%. These Mycoplasma spp. were identified as M bovis (62.0%), M bovigenitalium (12.0%), M californicaum (12.0%), and M alkalescens (12.0%). This study shows that the bovine mammary gland infected by Mycoplasma spp. is present in some dairy farms and the routine culture test of bulk tank milk samples for Mycoplasma is needed for a high quality milk promotion services.

경남 남부지방에서 임상형 유방염의 원인균 분리 및 약제 감수성 시험 (Isolation and Antimicrobial Drug Susceptibility of Mastitic Pathogens from Dairy Cattles with Clinical Mastitis in Gyeongnam South Area)

  • The present study was conducted to investigate isolation and antimicrobial drug susceptibility of clinical mastitic milking total 610 (897 quaters) dairy cattles from 36 dairy farms in Gyeongnam south area (Cosung, Masan) during the period from March 1999 to August 2002. The results obtained were summerized as follows . 1. Incidence of bacterial infection in four quaters was showed that right anterior quarter was 178(19.8%), right posterior quarter was 292(32.6%), left anterior quarter was 148 (16.2%), and left posterior quarter was 279 (31.1%), respectively. Isolation rate of posterior two quarters was higher 2 times than anterior two quarters. 2. Incidence of double infections of 897 clinical mastitic milk were showed that single infection was 549 (61.2%), double infection was 167(18.6%), triple infection was 9(1%) and no isolation was 172(19.2%). 3. Isolation of infected etiologic bacteria was showed that Streptococci spp., was 267(31%), Staphylococci spp., was 267(41%), S aureus, was 48(5.6%), G(-) bacillus was 126(5.6%), and Corynebactrium spy. was 52(6%), respectively, from total 861 samples. 4. The results of antimicrobial drug susceptibility of all isolates were showed that Streptococci spp., Staphylococci spp., S aureus, (G)(-) bacillus, and Corynebactrium spp. were susceptible to cefuroxime, cefoperazone, amoxicillin, cefazolin, ampicilin, penicillin, gentamicin, erythromycin, cloxacilin, ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxasole/trimetoprim, teteracyclin, and norfloxacin (> 70%), but some of them were resistant to neomycin, streptomycin colistin, and cephalothin(> 60). 5. The results of drug susceptibility obtained from each farms had different susceptibility, even though, etiological microorganisms were same in each farms.

  • New Zealand, Palmerston North 지역의 낙농가 80여 개 낙농가에 1998년 2월부터 1998년 7월까지 우편설문지에 의해 조사되었다. 주어진 질문항목은 1) General characteristics, 2) Milk yield 와 feed supplementary, 3) Reproductive efficiencies(14개 질의), 4) Reproductive disorders (12개 질의) 4개 항목을 포함하는 합계 43개의 질문을 내포하고 있었다. 낙농가의 웅답자 38농가 (47.5%)에서 회수된 질의문 4개 항목 중 3), 4) 항목에 해당되는 번식능력 향상을 위한 번식상황, 번식장해, 젖소의 일반적인 질환(대사질환 포함) 및 도태 등에 관한 조사결과를 집계분석하여 우리나라 낙농인 (특히 제주도)들에게 인식시키고, New Zealand 성적과 비교하였던 바 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. Palmers ton North 지역에서 인공수정만을 실행하고 있는 낙농가는 38농가 중 15농가 (39.5%)뿐이고 나머지 23농가(60.5%)는 임신율을 향상시키기 위하여 대부분 약 5∼6 마리의 종모우를 확보하고 있었다. 대부분의 농가는 대략 10월 20일경에서 12월 10일 까지 약 42일간 인공수정을 실시하고 그 후부터 익년 1월 19일까지 (약 42일) 종모우로 자연교미를 시도하고 있었다. 인공수정 개시 후 전체 종빈우 중 3주 동안에 발정 발현율이 84.7%, 6주에는 93.9%, 그리고 10주까지 약 97.9%의 발정두수가 포착되여 임신으로 유도되었다. 2. 미경산우의 첫발정 1월령, 첫수정 l월령 그리고 첫분만 1월령은 각각 대략 11.0, 15.4 과 24.7개월이었고, 임신까지의 수정회수는 약 1.4회였다. 또한 분만 후 발정재귀와 첫수정일은 각각 38,68일로 상당히 우리나라보다 빠른 성적을 보여주고 있었다. 3. 전체 수정두수에 있어서 송아지 분만율은 90.9%이고, 유산된 암소 1.6% 이었으며, 공태율은 7.4% 이었고, 사육규모두수가 증가됨으로써 분만율은 떨어졌으며, 공태율도 약간씩 낮아지는 경향을 보여 주었다. 4. 번식장해에 있어서 사산, 후산정체 그리고 분만장해는 각각 평균 5.3, 3.7, 5.5%로서 사육 규모에 따라서 차이를 볼 수 없었다. 5. 대사질병중 유열, 신경성강직, 케토시스 발생율은 각각 평균 3.6, 3.0, 1.0%로 사육규모 두수별 큰 차이가 없었다. 그리고 치료 대상 중에서 분만장해는 평균 3.1%, 유방염 발생은 6.7%로 높았으나, 사육규모가 커질수록 비율이 떨어지는 경향을 보여주었으며, 다리절음은 평균 8.6%로서 400두 이상 사육규모에서 10.1% 높은 경향을 나타내었다. 6. 낙농가에서 사육 중 도태두수는 평균 15.5%서 연령, 다리절음, 기타 질병에 따른 도태두수는 각각 평균 2.9, 1.8, 4.3%로 사유규모별 차이가 없었으나, 저우유생산량, 번식장해의 의한 도태두수는 각각 평균 4.3, 5.1%로 사육두수가 많아짐에 따라서 낮아지는 경향을 보여 주었다. 7. 우리나라에서 조사된 성적과 비교할 때 대체로 일반적인 번식효율과 분만장해는 양호하였으나, 발절음, 대사질환, 그리고 도태율 동은 New Zealand 에서 높은 수치를 보여 주었다.

Application of Artificial Insemination Technology for Dairy Breeding in Mongolia

  • This study was focused on improvement of milk production in Mongolian dairy industry by artificial insemination (AI) technology, supported by ODA of KOICA in Republic of Korea. This program was started in January 2009 and it is in $3^{rd}$ years. This manuscript summarized the data especially on estrus synchronization and pregnancy establishment in dairy cows (Holstein) this year. A total of 81 dairy cows from 4 private farms (38 from Undarmal milk and that of 30, 8 and 5 dairy cows from Onjin (Enkhbayer), Jargalant, and BRM School farms respectively) were synchronized with 5 ml Lutalyse (i.m.) in the dump of dairy cows and then estrus was detected 2 to 3 days after $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ injection. The synchronized dairy cows were inseminated with 0.5 ml dairy frozen semen by conventional artificial insemination (AI) techniques. Pregnancy was diagnosed about 60 days after AI by palpation method. About 96.3% (78/81) of synchronized cows were responded to single $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ injection. Total 75 over 78 dairy cows (90.1%) inseminated were diagnosed as pregnant. The estrus induction and pregnancy rates were very effective using Lutalyse injection and conventional AI techniques in Mongolian dairy cow. The present results indicated that AI after estrus induction in Mongolian dairy cows could be applied to dairy breeding technology for improving breeding efficiency and milk production of the country.

Leptospira 속균(屬菌)에 대한 한우(韓牛) 및 유우(乳牛)의 혈청항체조사(血淸抗體調査) (Serological Survey of Leptospiral Antibody in Dairy and Korean Native Cattle)

  • A serological survey for antibodies to Leptospira (L.) interrogans in dairy and Korean native cattle in Gyeongbuk area was performed using 6 different living antigens, which were L. icterohaemorrhagiae(RGA), L. canicola(Hond Utrecht IV), L. autumnalis(Akiyami A), L. australis(Ballico), L. pomona(Pomona) and L. hebdomadis(Hebdomadis), by microscopic agglutination test. In the microscopic agglutination test, greater than partial agglutination at a serum dilution of 1:300 or over was recorded as positive. In the dairy cattle(Holstein), four(4.7%) of 86 sera from 13 dairy farms were positive for L. canicola and L. pomona antibodies. In the Korean native cattle, four(3.2%) of 124 sera from the slaughter house in Taegu city were positive for L. canicola, L. icterohaemorrhagiae and L. pomona antibodies. Among the positive sera, L, canicola was dominated in this experiment.

농가생산 원유의 유질 및 위생진단에 관한 연구 (Studies on Hygienic Status of Raw Milk in Dairy Farms)

  • 본 시험은 제주도내 92개 낙농가중 3지역 8개 낙농가 착유우 262두에서 생산되는 우유의 품질을 분석하고, 고품질 우유생산에 저해 요인이 되는 유방염 원인균을 분석 처방하여 체세포 수가 낮은 신선한 고품질의 우유를 생산코자 시험을 수행하였다. 6-10월 중 일일 1두당 평균 산유량은 22.4kg, 평균 유지율은 3.69%였다. 우유내 평균 세균수는 15천/ml로 대체로 양호 하였으며, 체세포 수는 농가 평균 254.6천/ml 였고, 착유우 742분방에 대한 6-10월간 체세포수의 분포 비율은 우유 ml당 20만 이하 68.8%, 20-50만 18.8%, 50만 이상 12.4% 였다. 유방염 원인균별 발생분포는 포도구균성이 47분방으로 가장 많았으며, 연쇄상 구균성 17분방, 바실러스성 12분방 등으로 분석되었다. 산유량, 유지율, 세균 수, 체세포 수를 적용한 농가별 월간 조수입은 두당평균 407천원이였으며, E와 A 농가에서는 456-445천원으로 높은 반면, H농가는 314천원으로 낮아 농가간에 큰 소득 차이가 있었다. 결론적으로 낙농소득 향상을 위해서는 사양체계 개선에 의한 산유량 및 유지 율을 높이고, 위생적인 사양관리로 세균 수를 낮추며, 유방염의 예방 및 정기 검진에 의한 적정 처방으로 체세포 수를 경감시켜야 할 것으로 사료된다.

젖소농가의 착유시설에 따른 친환경세제의 세척에 미치는 영향 (Cleaning Effects of Environmental-Friendly Washing Detergent on Milking Installation in Dairy Farms)

  • 본 연구는 젖소 착유농가를 대상으로 착유 및 집유 후 친환경세제를 사용하여 세척효과에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위해 수행되었다. 착유환경이 다른 5지역의 농가를 대상으로 총 시험 기간 6주 동안 첫 3주는 기존 관행세제인 알칼리 세제와 산세제를 사용하여 착유기, 냉각기 및 착유기 라이너를 세척하였으며, 처리를 달리하여 3주는 알칼리 세제와 친환경세제를 사용하여 세척 하였다. 또한 착유기 라이너 내부를 멸균된 swab을 이용해 시계방향으로 10회 닦은 후 0.1% peptone수에 보관하였으며, 채취된 모든 샘플은 아이스박스를 이용해 보관 운반하여 잔류세균 및 잔류물질 분석을 실시하였다. 미생물 분포는 모든 지역의 착유농가에서 대장균, 대장균군, 황색포도상구균, 분내 대장균군, 녹농균 및 여시니아균이 발견되지 않았으며, 총균수는 관행세제 사용과 비교하여 차이가 없었다. 따라서 친환경세제의 세척효과는 관행세제와 비교하여 비슷한 세척효과를 나타낸 것으로 조사되었다. 세척수 잔류물질은 안성, 온양 및 천안의 젖소 착유농가의 세척수로 사용한 용수에서 질산성 질소가 기준치를 초과하였으며, 세척수의 잔류물질에서도 높은 농도를 나타냈다. 특히 원유의 특이취와 밀접한 관계가 있는 음이온계면활성제의 농도는 관행세제를 사용한 오수와 남원지역의 세척수에서 기준치보다 높은 농도를 나타냈으며, 친환경세제 사용 처리구에서는 기준치보다 낮은 결과를 나타냈다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 친환경 세제를 젖소 착유농가의 착유기 및 냉각기의 세척제로 사용하였을 때, 관행세제와 비교하여 세척효과가 비슷한 것으로 조사됐다. 또한 세척제 사용뿐만 아니라, 위생적인 착유장비 및 세척에 사용되는 용수 관리가 고품질 원유생산에 중요한 영향을 줄 것으로 생각된다.
