  • This paper conducts an empirical analysis on the effects of bancassurance on stability and efficiency of the Korean banking industry. The stability and the efficiency are measured using Z-score and composite functional form based on the annual data of 2000 to 2004 for all domestic banks and insurance companies. The stability test indicates that expansion of bancassurance decreases the stability of banks. Furthermore, the efficiency test implies that with the extension of bancassurance, the cost efficiency declines while revenue efficiency rises, which results in an overall increase of profit efficiency.

  • M channel near-perfect-reconstruction(NPR) pseudo-QMF banks are a hybrid of conventional pseudo-QMF design and spectral factorization approach where the analysis and synthesis filters are cosine-modulated versions of the prototype-lowpass filter(p-LPF). However, p-LPF H(z) does not have linear-phase symmetry as well as magnitude-distortion optimization since it is obtained by spectral factorization of $2M^{-th}$ band filter $G(z)=z^{-(N-1)}H(z^{-1})H(z)$. A fair amount of attention, therefore, has been focused on the design of filter banks for reducing only alias-cancellation distortion without reconstructed-amplitude distortion. In this paper, we propose a new method for designing linear-phase p-LPF in NPR pseudo-QMF banks, which is based on Maxflat(maximally flat) FIR filters with closed-form transfer function. In addition, p-LPF H(z) is optimized in this approach so that the 2M-channel overall distortion response represented with $G(z)=H^2(z)$ approximately becomes an unit magnitude response. Through several examples of NPR pseudo-QMF banks, it is shown that the peek ripple of the overall magnitude distortion is less than $3.5{\times}10^{-4}\;({\simeq}-70dB)$ and analysis/synthesis filters have the sharp monotone-stopband attenuation exceeding 100 dB.

  • Soil seed banks at ecological preservation areas in Seoul, Jinkwannae-dong, Bangi-dong and Bam-sum, were studied by seedling emergence method from May to October 2004. Total number of species and individuals in seed banks were 42 and 5,190 at Jinkwannae-dong, 39 and 2,290 at Bangi-dong, and 39 and 1,047 at Bamsum. Salix koreensis community at Jinkwannae-dong has the highest number of seedlings among all sites. The most abundant species were Lindernia procumbens in Jinkwannae-dong and Bam-sum and Typha spp. in Bangi-dong. The dominant species of seed banks were different from that of plant communities such as Phragmites communis community, Salix koreensis community, Persicaria thunbergii community, Phragmites japonica community, and Populus tomentiglandulosa community. However the dominant species of seed banks in Typha community was Typha spp. Total 63 species emerged in either the wet or submerged conditions. Fifty six species appeared in the wet condition and 25 in the submerged condition. Eighteen species appeared in both conditions. Numbers of species and individuals were much less in the submerged condition than in the wet condition but free-floating hydrophytes including Rorippa islandica and floating-leaved hydrophytes including Monochoria vaginalis appeared only in the submerged condition. In the investigation of soil seed bank by distance from water edge (Bamsum), water side 3 ($300\sim350m$ from water) edge, where water level is fluctuating frequently, has the highest number of seedlings.

  • International Factoring transaction in Korea is different from that of financially advanced countries in terms of legal system and commercial and financial practices. As for the domestic factoring, Korean factors are only involved in advances often on a with recourse basis. With regard to the international factoring, Korean factors do not accommodate whole account receivables from clients (suppliers) but handle on a selective basis. Among Korean banks, KEXIM (Export and Import Bank of Korea) is sole factor for international transactions. Currently KEXIM and several foreign banks handle factoring provide factoring services with limitation to invoice discounting which is largely extended to large corporate names. Therefore this is far different from factoring in Europe and Americas designed for small exporters with non recourse advances. In respect of legal environment, receivable assignment is subject to debtor' acknowledge or approval of such assignment according to Civil Law Act. To remove the legal obstacles, Korean government have prepared new law which allows factor's own notification of assignment (and thereby reimbursement right) to debtor with some evidences.

  • We proposed a framework for computer-supported credit evaluation systems for the effective management of credit risks in Korean commercial banks. Especially for medium and small sized companies, credit evaluators used to depend much on past experience rather than formalized principles and rules. Therefore, we applied case-based reasoning. The credit grade of a company is roughly determined by searching for alreadygraded similar companies in terms of usually accepted evaluation items. And then the grade is refined and adjusted by considering additional information about exceptional facts or by reflecting other evaluation results from different methods or techniques. Booch's object-oriented analysis and design method, Visual Basic 5.0 and MS Access 97 are used for the development of this prototype system.

  • This research examines the importance of IT training/education, present situation and possible suggestion for the successful training/education. The research method adopts a comparative analytical approach based on questionnaire survey responses from three work groups - managers, employees, and union representatives - drawn from five sample Korean banks. The evidence indicates that all three groups agree that IT improves banking efficiency and reduces job repetitiveness, but their job satisfaction level with IT-based work is surprisingly very low. The main reasons are mainly lack of training/education and poor user manuals. Also the research shows that most respondents would like to get further training/education to more adequately fit them for their jobs. Those from banks which invested in continuing training/education revealed more positive work attitudes and higher job satisfaction.
