Exploring the risk factors of adolescent suicide is important for effective suicide prevention. This study explored the clustering of adolescent suicides based on six risk factors: mental disorder, broken family, depression, anxiety, previous suicide attempts, and deviant behaviors. Using 173 student suicide reports obtained from the Ministry of Education, we evaluated the associations between suicide and variables related to mental disorders; dysfunctional family life; depression and anxiety; previous suicide attempts; deviant behaviors such as drinking and smoking; and school life characteristics, including attendance and discipline, problems within the past year, and incidents prior to suicide. In addition, reports of warning signs just before suicide were included in the analysis. The two-stage cluster analysis classified the students into three clusters: the silent type (cluster 1; 48.55%), in which no risk factors were observed; environmental-risk type (cluster 2: 24.28%), which featured a high frequency of broken households, deviant behaviors such as smoking/drinking and running away from home; and depressive type (cluster 3: 27.17%), which featured a high frequency of mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and suicide attempts. Identifying the sub-types of adolescent suicide may help to inform tailored suicide prevention and intervention strategies in school.

Purpose: This cross-sectional study was designed to identify anger-expression types of adolescent women and investigate the relation between the identified anger-expression types and their problem behaviors and health status. Method: One hundred ninety nine high school freshmen were recruited from September to November, 2003. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, cluster analysis, 2-test, ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple comparison test. Result: Three anger-expression types in adolescent women were found; Anger-out/in, Anger-control/in, and Anger-control type. Adolescent women with frequently using the anger-out/in type and with higher state anger reported more delinquent behaviors, more health risk behaviors, and higher psychosomatic symptoms. However, adolescent women with lower state anger and frequently using the anger-control type reported more depression scores. Conclusion: There is a need to further clarify the relationship between anger-expression type sand depression in adolescent women. The findings suggest the necessity of a development of the program for lowering the anger level and controlling the unfavorable anger expression types such as the anger-out in.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between eating disorders and parent-adolescent communication in middle school students. Method: There were 267 adolescents taken as participants from two middle schools in rural areas. Data were collected from June to July 2005, using the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 questionnaire (23 items) and Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory (10 items for open family communication, 10 items for problem in family communication). The SPSS Win version 12.0 was used for descriptive analysis, t-test, and partial correlation coefficient. Result: The mean score on the eating disorder was 2.74 (range: 1-6). Meanwhile, the mean scores on the parent-adolescent communication was 3.37 (range: 1-5). There were significant differences in eating disorders according to gender, age, negative perception of the participant's body weight, family's perception of obesity, diet experiences, and BMI. Eating disorders showed a significant negative correlation with parent-adolescent communication. Conclusion: In this study, there was a significant negative correlation between eating disorders and parent-adolescent communication. In order to prevent an eating disorder, education and training to enhance communication skills should be provided to adolescents and their parents as well.

Purpose : This study aimed to identify the effects parent-adolescent intimacy, parent-adolescent communication, and empathy on the clinical competency of nursing students. Method : Data were collected by 175 nursing students using a self-questionnaire from May 17 to 31, 2017. The data were analyzed with the SPSS 21.0 using an independent t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. Result : There were significant positive correlations between clinical competency and the other variables. The strongest predictors of clinical competency were parent-adolescent intimacy (${\beta}=.33$) and academic record (${\beta}=.21$), and the model explained 11.3% (F=16.04, p<.001) of the variance. Conclusion : The findings indicated that further studies are needed to explore various factors influencing clinical competency and develop education programs for college nursing students.
The purposes of this research are to find out general trends of mother-adolescent communication and family stress to estimate the differences of communication patterns and family stress according to sociodemographic and communication variables and to analyze communication variables influencing on family stress. The samples were selected from high school students and their mothers and 342 couples were used in final analysis. Barnes & Olson(1982)'s parent-adolescent communication scale(PACI) and McCubbin(1981)'s family stress scale(FILE) were used to measure mother-adolescent communication pattern and family stress. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, Chi-square, F-test Duncan-test, multiple regression, Pearson's r, and Chronbach's α. The result are summerized as follows: 1) Mothers highly perceived mother-adolescent open communication pattern but adolescents highly revealed mother-adolescent close communication pattern. The general trends of family stress showed that adolescents stress is higher than mothers. 2) Communication patterns showed significant differences in mother's age, adolescent's sex and communication variables in mother's education and conversation variables. Generally when mothers and adolescents communicated insufficiently and were not satisfied with communication patterns family stress was increased. 3) Family stress was significantly different in communication patterns. Form the regression analysis it was found that communication patterns are crucial to family stress. Especially open communication pattern between mothers and adolescents was the most important among the communication patterns for family stress was reduced.
Objectives: To analyze the characteristics of smoking prevention programs for the adolescent, and to synthesize the common effect sizes on smoking prevention programs for the adolescent. Methods: Seventeen studies for meta-analysis were selected from dissertations, these, and papers that had been published from 1996 to 2005 and had a randomized or nonequivalent control group in a pre test-post test design. The analysis of the data was computed by using the meta-analysis software package developed by Song(2003). Results: Smoking prevention programs for the adolescent have resulted in a significant effect size on smoking-knowledge( .62), smoking-attitude( .55) of smoking prevention programs for the adolescent showed more than 'medium effect' size. In smoking-knowledge and amount of smoking, the effect size was smoking-attitudes, the effect size was large in the studies which consists of more than 10 sessions of intervention. Conclusion: From the above results, we notice that the smoking prevention programs for the adolescent were effective in increasing the smoking-knowledge, smoking-attitudes, and the intention of smoking-cessation.
This study is to examine (the) effects of self-control, parent-adolescent communication, and school life satisfaction on smart-phone addiction for middle school students. The 127 students who were classified as smart-phone addicts among first to third grade at two middle schools located in Gyunggido were sampled with a survey. T-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis were used. The results of study were as follows. First, smart-phone addiction make no difference according to adolescent's sex and grade. Second, the relations between smart-phone addiction and the factors included self-control, parent-adolescent communication, and school life satisfaction were negatively correlated. As a result, the higher self-control, parent-adolescent communication, and school life satisfaction were, the lower smart -phone addiction was. Third, it is significant as variable that adverse effect, low rank class of parent-adolescent communication and personal relationship, same class as the former of school life satisfaction exert influence on smart phone addiction.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the structural relationships between adolescent problem behaviors and related variables. The subjects of this study consisted of 250 to second graders from a middle school in S city in the Gyeongbuk province of South Korea. The sample variance-covariance matrix was analyzed using AMOS 20.0, and a maximum likelihood minimization function. The results were as follows : First, marital conflict in terms of the father's open communication model indicated both a direct and indirect effect upon adolescent problem behaviors. Marital conflict in terms of the father's problematic communication model revealed an indirect effect upon adolescent problem behaviors also indicated that these behaviors were also mediated by the father's problems communication. Second, a open communication style on the part of the father indicated a partially mediating effect on the relationship between marital conflict and adolescent problem behaviors. The problematic communication model on the part of the father revealed a very clear mediating effect on the relationship between marital conflict and adolescent problem behaviors.
This research explored parenting education programs for be college students and adolescent workers, and it was focused on determining whether different parenting education programs were needed for college students and adolescent workers. The participants were 254 college students in Suncheon and 135 adolescent industrial workers in Ulsan. Data were gathered via questionnaires and two-way ANOVA analyses of parenting effectiveness by sex and social status(college student, versus adolescent industrial worker), and by age and social status were performed. There were no significant differences based on sex, age, or social status, and no interaction effect. However, there were significant differences in adolescents' parenting effectiveness depending on childhood parenting experiences, parenting knowledge, and parenting education program experience. Among the predictors(sex, age, social status, childhood parenting experience, parenting knowledge, and parent education experiences) adolescents' childhood parenting experiences was the strongest variable for predicting parenting effectiveness. In this regard, the results confirmed Bronfenbrenner's Ecological System's Theory that family influences children's belief systems about parenting effectiveness in the microsystem. Furthermore, the results indicate that a different parenting education program is not needed for college students and adolescent industrial workers, respectively; instead, a more comprehensive parenting education program for all adolescents - regardless of social status is needed. And based on the present study's results, the importance of child development knowledge, and parent-child relationships in parenting education programs was also confirmed. From a broader social perspective, all adolescents are encouraged to participate in parenting education programs.
The purpose of this study is to examine factors causing the female adolescent sexual activity. 201 female adolescents participated in this study. Each participant was classified into the sexual activity experience or non-sexual activity experience group on the basis of survey. In total, 87 female adolescents have sexual activity experience, and 114 female adolescents have non-sexual activity experience. Analysis reported that sexual activity experience group was more positive on the adolescent sexual activity than non-sexual activity experience group. Also sexual activity experience group has more peers having sexual activity and pregnancy experience than non-sexual activity experience group. And, sexual activity experience group was more coping level and lower father social support than non-sexual activity experience group. Logistic regression analysis was conducted in order to determine the extent to which the attitude on the adolescent sexual activity, peer group's sexual experiences, social support, and coping factors affected on female adolescent sexual activity. As a results, peer's sexual activity and peer's pregnancy factors were significantly associated with it. Finally based on the results, the intervention strategies were suggested.
