Participants were composed of 319 high school 1st graders (153 male and 165 female students) from the Seoul area. They completed questionnaires on parental behavioral control, adolescents' anxiety, and adolescents' school related adjustment. The collected data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficients, Factor Analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling. It was adapted to SPSS version 19.0 and Amos version 21.0 for Windows. The results indicated that adolescents' anxiety partially mediated the association of parental behavioral control and adolescents' school related adjustment. More concretely, direct effect of adolescents' anxiety on adolescents' school related adjustment were slightly greater than the direct/indirect effects of parental behavioral control on adolescents' school related adjustment. The effect of adolescents' anxiety on adolescents' school related adjustment was the greatest among all associations between research variables. The findings of this study have implications for research and practice that highlights the important considerations for proper parental behavioral control and reducing adolescents' anxiety that should be emphasized to improve adolescents' school related adjustment. We believe that improved parental behavioral control needs to be emphasized when designing prevention and parent intervention education programs for adolescents' psychological problem and school related adjustment.

  • Purpose: The following study seeks to ascertain the motivations behind students' academic major selection and to identify the obstacles they encounter in the transition to university life, with the objective of providing information necessary to adapt well to the university and the course. Thereby, we aim to supply basic resources needed in the development of a university adaptation program to prevent academic dropout. Methods: Between October 1, 2019 and November 29, 2019, a self-administered questionnaire was distributed to a study sample consisting of students currently attending dental technology courses in Gangwondo and Gyeonggido. A total of 474 (94.8%) responses to the questionnaire were received and used for the final analysis. Results: Factors including major selection motivation, intrinsic motivation (p<0.001), academic adjustment (p<0.001), social adjustment (p<0.01), and institutional adjustment (p<0.05) all had negative relationships with academic dropout intention. Personal-emotional adjustment (p<0.001), however, showed a positive relationship with dropout intention. The explanatory power of the model was found to be 50.0%. Conclusion: This research shows that intrinsic motivation and personal-emotional adjustment diminish academic dropout intention. Therefore, it is recommended that diverse postenrolment course-adjustment programs should be developed to improve students' confidence in their choice of study, their adjustment to the course, and their level of satisfaction.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the attributes of social adjustment among adolescent cancer survivors using concept analysis and to propose a definition of the concept. Methods: In accordance with the hybrid model of concept analysis, this study employed a three-phase circular process comprising theoretical, fieldwork, and final analysis phases. A thorough literature review was conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, and Korean databases, followed by qualitative fieldwork with seven participants. The results derived from the theoretical and fieldwork phases were integrated into the final analysis phase. Results: Four attributes of social adjustment were found in adolescent cancer survivors: having harmonious relationships with friends, having harmonious relationships with boy/girlfriends, fulfilling their present roles, and planning for and expecting future roles. The following definition of social adjustment of adolescent cancer survivors is proposed: "the conquering of difficulties arising from the continuum of childhood cancer and the achievement of the developmental tasks of typical adolescents." Conclusion: Social adjustment of childhood cancer survivors is crucial for integrating them into society. The findings of this study provide a basis for developing an instrument to measure the social adjustment of adolescent cancer survivors and for developing of interventions that target this group.

  • Purpose - Capital structure adjustment costs influence the test of the standard trade-off theory of capital structure. We investigate whether there exist economically significant capital adjustment costs in the Korean retail industry. Research design, data, and methodology - This paper adopts the model of Leary and Roberts(2005) to obtain the hazard rate of capital structure variations. The retail firms traded in the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets are analyzed from 2000 to 2016. Results - The empirical analysis shows infrequent capital structure adjustments in the Korean retail firms. The duration analysis emphasizes that the fixed adjustment cost plays an important role in the determination of capital structure adjustments for the Korean retail firms. Yet, even after taking account of infrequent capital structure adjustments, the trade off theory only weakly explains the capital structure variations of the Korean retail firms. Conclusions - This paper confirms the existence of capital structure adjustment costs for the Korean retail firms. Our results argue for the significance of fixed adjustment costs in capital structure adjustments. Such emphasis on the fixed cost is inconsistent with the existing studies. The trade off theory does not successfully explain capital structure policy in the Korean retail firms even after considering adjustment costs.
