  • Ten years have passed since Samsung SDI and LG Electronics introduced six sigma. Six sigma spreads on the wide industry areas such as service and public sectors as well as manufacturing industry. Six sigma speaks for Korean enterprise's management innovation now. Then, can we evaluate that Korean enterprise's six sigma has settled down successfully? This study compares Korean enterprise's six sigma with those of Japanese and American enterprises in the view of leadership, project, people, and methodology. We suggest five topics for the successful settlement of six sigma in Korean enterprises; 1) Role of executives and managers should be changed more actively, 2) Strategy-connected projects should be excavated, 3) Utilization and development plan should be made for black belt and master black belt, 4) Six sigma methodology should be advanced, especially DFSS methodology, and finally 5) Several innovation methodology should be integrated.

  • Nowadays, a large number of Executive Information Systems (EIS) have been developed around the world, most of them are in the United States. These systems were mainly for senior executives to monitor the current status and to find out possible opportunities/problems of their organizations. They also provide a number of capabilities such as drill-down, exception reporting, and trend analysis on hard and soft data from both internal and external sources. The purpose of this study is to see where the current status of the use of EIS in Korea and the Korean EIS industry are. The survey result is valuable to Korean EIS developers - both in-house developers and outside vendors. They can develop appropriate EISs based on the findings.

Literature was reviewed to classify and define variables in IT CBA, and questionnaire was distributed to CEOs, CIOs, IT managers, and general managers in Korean companies. Respondent's priority ranking in IT CBA was shown to be tangible benefit, direct cost/intangible benefit, and indirect cost/risk. Data analysis showed that Korean companie's actual practice in CBA was generally aligned with their perception. User group's(Executives vs. mangers, and IT managers vs. general managers) perception was not shown to be statistically different. Survey result also showed that IT CBA was not well practiced in the companies although respondents perceive the analysis very important. These findings suggest that more education and practical experience is needed for Korean companies to perform IT CBA.

  • In recent years, academic scholars and practitioners have given increasing attention to the importance of strategic performance measurement systems including both financial and non-financial performance metrics. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is known as integrated performance management framework that helps an enterprise to translate strategic objectives into relevant performance within an organization. While the current literatures and management articles offer BSC design and implementation. there are few reports of detailed validation of using the rationalized sets of CSF (Critical Success Factors) and KPI (Key Performance Indicators) for the Korean construction industry. This paper first propose the perceived sets of CSF/KPI using current literatures and validate with a major construction company's executives and senior managers in Korea. The paper then examines whether the perceived sets of CSF/KPI have co-relationships with the firm performances. The results of the research contribute in heightening of competitiveness of the Korean construction companies in strategic and performance management.

Using environmental index disclosure in GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) reports of the Korean companies, the study examines the effects of ownership structure on the magnitude of environmental information disclosure. A total of 220 firm-years during 2013-2016 period are analyzed. The empirical results of the study indicate that the institutional and foreign investors' ownership have positive correlations with environmental information disclosure, while the executives' within board of directors has a negative correlation. The ownership by largest shareholders including those with special interests shows no significant relationship with the environmental information disclosure.

  • Executive information system (EIS) is a computer-based information system that supports decision makings and management activities for senior executives. Data warehouse is a database that receives data copies from legacy systems and external data sources. Data warehouse is typically optimized for decision supports and can be an attractive solution for EIS implementation. This paper proposes an architecture for implementing EIS by the use of data warehouse. The architecture consists of ten implementation layers. Interrelationships among these layers are investigated for an effective EIS implementation. An EIS prototype for a real-life enterprise is implemented to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed architecture.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study on relations between alliance types and firm's characteristics in Korean semiconductor industry to prevent trade disputes. The recognition of firms' business strategies tend to be subjective and there is a limitation to use the guiding principles due to subjectivity. If there are additional guiding principles which view strategic alliances in relation to more objective characteristics associated with firms, such as their size, function, scope, and location, they will be useful tools for executives and managers in their business practices. We analyze strategic alliances how firms; external characteristics become decision factors for selecting appropriate forms of strategic alliances. Previous research works with focus on alliance forms are reviewed, then an analytical framework is described with certain categorization of firms' characteristics and alliance forms.
