  • The Yoon Jeung residence is a well-known and prototypical aristocratic house example showing typical and interesting characteristics of the traditional houses in the middle region of Korea. When it comes to understanding the architectonic characteristics of a Korean traditional house, it was not easy to actually capture the compositional and/or constructional knowledge of the building even though it is a wooden building with many wooden members showing their compositional relations. Now with the help of the BIM tool, the Building Information Modeling tool, we could actually be able to compare and analyze each member and their compositional relations. In this paper we examine the unique traditional composition method used in extending the building's structural sections utilizing the bended-joint characteristics of traditional buildings with exemplar case of the Yoon Jeung residence. Thereby we examine those relationships among three major compositional parts namely the plan based spatial compositions, the upper wooden compositions and the roof forms so as to specify the building's typical characteristics with reasonably acceptable causes. The inner and outer block of the residence are handled with their bended-joints with more detailed knowledge of categorization by way of joint relationships among members.

The scope of this study was not large scale housing construction from traditional chusagotaek, yunjeunggotaek, yangjindang, dokrakdang target was the case. Focusing on examples extracted from Korea first eco-friendly characteristics of traditional residential architecture is an extension of nature to explore space and yard space, and South Korea by way of environmental control that appears in traditional architecture, waterproof, moisture, solar radiation, sunlight, ventilation and air Attributes such as environmental regulation and environmental regulation of space, place and manner of materials were described. Korea's research through more traditional residential architecture of the environmental control and a wide range of environmentally friendly eco-construction was that appeared natural to use energy efficiently, it had been available. Later appeared on the Korea traditional architecture through research on environmental control of environmentally friendly ways to navigate and take advantage of the elements, through continuous research and eco-friendly construction to realize the traditional South Korea could provide a prototype of the modern, I thought I'd had.

  • The present study purposed to identify differences and similarities in traditional residential space among Korea. China and Japan, which share similar social structure, and to make a comparative analysis on differences in traditional residential space according to family relation in the three countries. For these Purpose, this study selected residences, which are similar to one another in terns of time, class and economy and analyzed them using their floor plans and photographs. The results of this research are as follows. Knrea, China and Japan, all of which have family-centered social structure, separate their residential space from the external society and particularly women's space is placed inside men's space or in a secluded area. The most remarkable characteristic of residential space in Korea is the division of living spare between men and women. Space is allocated according to the hierarchical order of families. In this way, the position or order of family members is reflected in the use of space. Characteristically in China based on the large-family system each family is given a space for independent life. Particularly as the relation among brothers is emphasized, space is allocated equally to all brothers but the status of a space is determined by the order of the residents. Residential space in Japan is organized to emphasize the absolute authority and status of the head of the family. As the space is planned focused on the family head's daily life and guest reception, the relation among other family members is ignored. That is, Japanese residence is a social space for the family head's guest reception, Chinese residence is a family-centered space rather than a social space, and Korean residence accommodates both space for family life and social space.

This study focuses on the Japanese style official residence implanted into Korea before 1910. Before 1910 Japanese civilians in Korea builded just a traditional Japanese dwellings at the Japanese settlement in the ports opened. But Japanese engineers engaged in governmental organization of construction in the Old-Korean Empire builded a central corridor type Japanese dwellings as official residence. The central corridor type Japanese dwelling was an urban dwelling compromised between Japanese style and western style and distinguished by an outer-court type plan, Japanese entrance hall, central corridor and western style reception room. It is certified that the central corridor type Japanese dwelling was implanted into Korea before 1910 and this was the first time an urban dwelling to be implanted and spread through the whole Korea. The central corridor type Japanese dwelling implanted into Korea took in On-Dol and transformed to Korea-Japanese eclectic style. The central corridor type Japanese dwellings implanted into Korea in the time of the rule of Japanese imperialism makes function as a precedent of a modern urban dwelling to Korean and makes Korean dwellings transform from the rural inner court type into the urban outer court type.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify determinants for the perception of traditional food and the probability of belonging to the succession group of traditional food. This study also analyzed foods for seasonal custom and strengths as well as direction concerning improvement of traditional foods, while taking the housewives' hometowns into account. Data were collected from 304 housewives living on Baengnyeong island. Regression analysis showed that family income, age, type, years of residence on Baengnyeong island and hometown were significantly related to the perception of traditional food. Among the significant variables, hometown was the most important factor in explaining perceptional differences. Logit analysis indicated that the probability of belonging to the succession group of traditional food was high with low educational level, high perceptional degree, and North Korea as a native country. The results of chi-square analysis proved that foods associated with seasonal custom, strengths and the improvement of traditional food were different between housewives having South Korea and North Korea as a native country. In this article, similarities and differences in the foods associated with seasonal customs, strengths and the direction concerning improvement of traditional foods are discussed, and implications for both nutritionists and food marketers are provided.

  • Furniture is a medium to interconnect the living space to human, and it is the closest environmental element that limits the functions of the space, defines the style of the living, and adjusts the actions and behaviors of human. Therefore the furniture can be said to be one of the craft arts that reflects the culture and living style as they are according to the periodical, regional, and social stratum characteristics. Within this context, this study tries to suggest new design and living culture that can harmonize with the modern residence living culture and incorporate the traditional varnishing technique with lacquer that had been discontinued. Coming to the modern days, the varnishing with lacquer is getting attention again with its environment friendly characteristics and antibiotic functions, and is being applied to various applications. To inherit and maintain such an excellent traditional culture, I would like to improve the practicality by applying to modern furniture, and to contribute to develop and tell the world about the superiority of our culture.

  • A convenience samples of Korean-Canadian/American adults who lived in Vancouver, San Hose and Los Angeles areas for over 10 years, were studied in 2000. Total of 130 adults were analyzed by immigration age. The age of immigration age was divided into 3 groups: the young group immigrated at 25 or before, the middle group immigrated at 26 to 40, and the old group immigrated at over 40. Their average length of residence in Canada and the U.S. was a little longer than 20 years. The dietary behavior patterns were similar among 3 groups, except co-eaters and dining-out frequency, and the Korean-Canadians/Americans seemed to be more home-based, family-tightened and traditional patterns than Koreans in Korea. They liked Korean traditional basic dishes, but their children liked a-la-carte ones and immigrants at early 20's showed similar food preferences as young generations. The attitudes of dietary acculturation for themselves and for their children were high. Since immigrating at age 26 to 40 years old rather than 20's or over 40's, showed stronger acculturation attitudes even with no significance and revealed significantly differences in some dietary behaviors and food preferences, it is recommended that immigration age should be considered when planning dietary foodservices at nursing care systems for Korean Canadians/Americans.
