  • A BEM is highly efficient method in the sense of economic computation. However, boundary integration is not easy for the complex and moving surface e.g. in a rotating blade. Thus, Kirchhoff surface is designed in an effort to overcome the difficulty resulting from complex boundary conditions. A Kirchhoff surface is a fictitious surface which envelopes acoustic sources of main concern. Acoustic sources may be distributed on each Kirchhoff surface element depending on its acoustic characteristics. In this study, an axial fan is assumed to have loading noise as a dominant source. Dipole sources can be computed based on the FW-H equation. Acoustic field is then computed by changing Kirchhoff surface on which near-field is implemented, to analyze the effect of Kirchhoff surface on it.

  • The leading edge of a low-drag super-cavitating foil has been made to be thick enough by using a point drag which is supposed to be a linear model of the Kirchhoff lamina. In the present paper, the relation between the point drag and the Kirchhoff lamina is made clear by analyzing the cavity drag of both models and the leading edge radius of the point drag model and the lamina thickness of Kirchhoff\`s profile K. The matched asymptotic expansion is effectively made use of in designing a practical super-cavitating fool which is not only of low drag but also structurally sound. Also it has a distinct leading edge cavity separation point. The cavity foil shapes of trans-cavitating propeller blade sections designed by present method are shown.

  • Acoustic holography uses Kirchhoff·Helmholtz integral equation and Green's function which satisfies Dirichlet boundary condition Applications of acoustic holography have been taken to the sound field neglecting the effect of flow. The uniform flow, however, changes sound field and the governing equation, Green's function and so on. Thus the conventional method of acoustic holography should be changed. In this research, one possibility to apply acoustic holography to the sound field with uniform flow is introduced through checking for the plane wave in a duct. Change of Green's function due to uniform flow and one method to derive modified form of Kirchhoff·Heimholtz integral is suggested for 1-dimensional sound field. Derivation results show that using Green's function satisfying Dirichlet boundary condition, we can predict sound pressure in a duct using boundary value.

  • To numerically construct the sound fields by a plenum fan mostly found in Air-Handling Unit (AHU), the Kirchhoff-BEM approach was applied to the near-field data of a turbo fan. The scattering effects were found to be significant by the plenum box structure for high-frequency components of source. The directivity petterns and sound pressure levels were also dependent upon the helmholts number which must be considered of the design stage for sound reduction program.

  • Sound generation and radiation from the duct-rotor system are calculated numerically. The wake geometries of a two-bladed rotor are calculated by using a time-marching fiee-wake method without a non-physical model of the far wake. Acoustic free field due to a rotating rotor is obtained by Lowson's equation. Using Kirchhoff source, rotating sources are modeled as stationary ones and can be inserted in the thin body boundary element method. The Kirchhoff source is validated through calculation of acoustic pressure due to a rotating point force. The thin body boundary element method (thin body BEM) is validated through calculation of acoustic radiation of ducted dipole. Using Kirchhoff source and thin body BEM, acoustic radiation of a ducted rotating source is calculated. Acoustic shielding is observed by inserting a duct and shows different phenomena at each major frequency. Acoustic radiation of a real duct-rotor system is also calculated using this method and the ducted acoustic field is significantly different from rotor only.

  • Static performance was compared for the triangular plate elements through some numerical experiments. Four Kirchhoff elements and six Mindlin elements were selected for the comparison. Numerical tests were executed for the problems of rectangular plates with regular and distorted meshes, rhombic plates, circular plates and cantilever plates. Among the Kirchhoff 9 DOF elements, the discrete Kirchhoff theory element was the best. Element distortion and the aspect ratio were shown to have negligible effects on the displacement behaviour. The Specht's element resulted in better results than the Bergan's but it was sensitive to the aspect ratio. The element based on the hybrid stress method also resulted in good results but it assumed to be less reliable. Among the linear Mindlin elements, the discrete shear triangle was the best in view of reliability, accuracy and convergence. Since the thin plate behaviour of it was as good as the DKT element, it can be used effectively in the finite element code regardless of the thickness. As a quadratic Mindlin element, the MITC7 element resulted in best results in almost all cases considered. The results were at least as good as those of doubly refined meshes of linear elements.

  • The objective of this research is to design blade planform to reduce high speed impulsive(HSI) noise from a non-lifting helicopter rotor using CFD method and optimization techniques. As for the aero-acoustic analysis, CFD technique for aerodynamic analysis and Kirchhoff's method for the acoustic analysis were used. As for the optimization method, Kriging-based genetic algorithm(GA) model as a high-fidelity optimization method was chosen. Design variables and constraints are determined for arbitrary blade planform. The result shows that the optimized blade planform with high swept-back and taper ratio can reduce HSI noise by suppressing generation of the strong shock wave on blade surface and propagation of the noise to the farfield flow region.

  • This paper presents an isogeometric discretization of Kirchhoff-Love thin shells using truncated hierarchical B-splines (THB-splines). It is demonstrated that the underlying basis functions are ideally appropriate for adaptive refinement of the so-called thin shell structures in the framework of isogeometric analysis. The proposed approach provides sufficient flexibility for refining basis functions independent of their order. The main advantage of local THB-spline evaluation is that it provides higher degree analysis on tight meshes of arbitrary geometry which makes it well suited for discretizing the Kirchhoff-Love shell formulation. Numerical results show the versatility and high accuracy of the present method. This study is a part of the efforts by the authors to bridge the gap between CAD and CAE.

  • The present work describes the prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a ducted axial fan. The prediction method is comprised of time-marching free-wake method, acoustic analogy, and the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff BEM. The predicted sound signal of a rotor is similar to the experiment one. We assume that the rotor rotates with a constant angular velocity and the flow field around the rotor is incompressible and inviscid. Then, a time-marching free-wake method is used to model the fan and to calculate the flow field. The force of each element on the blade is calculated by the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowson's method is used to predict the acoustic source. The newly developed Helmholtz-Kirchhoff BEM for thin body is used to calculate the sound field of the ducted fan. The ducted fan with 6 blades is analysed and the sound field around the duct is calculated.

  • In this study, it is presented analysis results of bending problems in the anisotropic cantilever thick plates and the anisotropic laminated cantilever thin plates bending problems. Finite element method in this analysis was used. Both Kirchoff's assumptions and Mindlin assumptions are used as the basic governing equations of bending problems in the anisotropic laminated plates. The analysis results are compared between the anisotropic laminated cantilever thick plates and the anisotropic laminated cantilever thin plates for the variations of thickness-width ratios.
