Polar Remote Sensing in Korea (한국의 극지 원격탐사)

  • Recently, much attention has been focused on the change and role of the Arctic region due to climate change. Studies using various platforms are being conducted in the polar regions. Among them, monitoring of Arctic cryosphere information using remote sensing is the most important observational role of various scientific activities. This special issue introduces several studies on polar exploration monitoring in polar research. We hope that this special issue contributes to the sharing of information on the role of polar exploration in remote areas, as well as the identification of the current status of domestic polar exploration and remote environmental exploration. We are also looking forward to the efforts of Korean remote sensing experts to find out the persistent polar exploration field and to increase national support.

Production, Purification, and Characterization of Phaseolus vulgaris Leghemoglobin a in Pichia pastoris (Pichia pastoris에서 강낭콩 Leghemoglobin a의 생산, 정제 및 특징)

  • In this study, Phaseolus vulgaris (kidney bean) leghemoglobin a (PhLba) gene was cloned into pPICZαA and expressed in Pichia pastoris to sustainably produce a heme-carrying protein for organoleptic use in plant-based meat. The recombinant PhLba protein was secreted into the culture medium in a solubilized form, and the molecular weight of the purified PhLba was estimated to be 16.5 kDa using SDS-PAGE. In addtion, the yield of recombinant PhLba holoprotein was enhanced by supplementation of the cultivation medium with hemin. This result indicates that the apo-forms of PhLba can be effectively saturated with cofactor.

Observations for the Ionosphere Using European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) in the Dayside Polar Cap/Cusp and Auroral Region

  • Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) and Korea Astronomy and Space Institute (KASI) have been participating in the European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) Scientific Association as an affiliate institution in order to observe the polar ionosphere since 2015. During the period of December 16-21, 2016 and January 3-9, 2018, the observations for the polar ionospheric parameters such as the electron density profiles, ion drift, and electron/ion temperature are carried out in the polar cap/cusp region by the EISCAT Svalbard radar (ESR). The purpose of the observations is to investigate the characteristic of the winter ionosphere in the dayside polar cap/cusp region. In this paper, we briefly report the results of the ESR observations for winter daytime ionosphere and also the simultaneous observations for the ionosphere-thermosphere system together with the balloon-borne instrument High-Altitude Interferometer WIND Experiment (HIWIND) performed by the High Altitude Observatory (HAO), National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). We further introduce our research activities using long-term EISCAT observations for the occurrence of ion upflow and the climatology of the polar ionospheric density profiles in comparison with the mid-latitude ionosphere. Finally, our future research plans will briefly be introduced.

History of 20 years since establishments of the Korean Geophysical Society and the Korean Society of Exploration Geophysicists and 10 years since integration as the Korean Society of Earth and Exploration Geophysicists (대한지구물리학회와 한국물리탐사학회의 설립 20 년, 한국지구물리·물리탐사학회로의 통합 10 년의 역사)

  • Since the liberation in 1945, Korean specialists in the field of geological science and mineral resources engineering have developed two disciplines through the cooperation and competition with each other. Specialists both in the geophysics and in the geophysical exploration, who share much, have developed their own fields deeper and broader. Since the late 1990s, specialists in both fields felt the need for an independent society to deal with their fields and discussed the establishment of such a society. In 1997, they discussed to establish a unified society which integrates both fields instead of separated societies. However, in 1998, the Korean Geophysical Society and the Korean Society of Exploration Geophysicists were separately established due to some practical problems. During 7 ~ 8 years since the establishment of the two societies, many members of the two societies intended that the two societies should integrate into a single comprehensive society based on the facts that many fields of each society are overlapped and naturally many members of one society are the members of the other society. The leaders of the two societies accepted these opinions also and began to discuss thoroughly the integration from 2005. Eventually, in 2007, the two societies successfully integrated and established the Korean Society of Earth and Exploration Geophysicists. The Korean Society of Earth and Exploration Geophysicists continues to cooperate and compete with other societies of geological science and mineral resources engineering in Korea and in circumpacific area including Asia, Oceania and Americas, contributing to the development of geophysics and geophysical exploration.

Development of KOPRI's Experiential Field Trip Programs for the Spread of Polar Science Culture (극지과학문화 확산을 위한 극지연구소 체험형 견학 프로그램 개발)

  • The goal of this study is to develop a hands-on type polar field trip program to inform the importance of the recent polar research and to contribute to the spread of polar science culture. For this purpose, the direction of program development and field trip course were established based on the current Korea Polar Research Institute tour program and research exhibition facilities analysis. Based on this, a total of 6 types field trip programs were developed, including one basic tour program and one optional experience program for the overall introduction of polar research institutes and polar science fields, and four optional experience programs for each education participant that enables field trips and professional experiential learning activities by polar science field. The developed program was revised and supplemented through a total of two trials, and a field trip program manual was produced, including guidance scripts, experience kits, activity sites, and instructor guides for each field trip. At the end, a follow-up study was proposed based on the significance and research results of the developed program.

High Resolution Ocean Color Products Estimation in Fjord of Svalbard, Arctic Sea using Landsat-8 OLI (Landsat-8 OLI를 이용한 북극해 스발바드 피요르드의 고해상도 Ocean Color Product 산출)

  • Ocean Color products have been used to understand marine ecosystem. In high latitude region, ice melting optically influences the ocean color products. In this study, we assessed optical properties in fjord around Svalbard Arctic sea, and estimated distribution of chlorophyll-a and suspended sediment by using high resolution satellite data, Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI). To estimate chlorophyll-a and suspended sediment concentrations, various regression models were tested with different band ratio. The regression models were not shown high correlation because of temporal difference between satellite data and in-situ data. However, model-derived distribution of ocean color products from OLI showed a possibility that fjord and coastal areas around Arctic Sea can be monitored with high resolution satellite data. To understand climate change pattern around Arctic Sea, we need to understand ice meting influences on marine ecosystem change. Results of this study will be used to high resolution monitoring of ice melting and its influences on the marine ecosystem change at high latitude. KOPRI (Korea Polar Research Institute) has been operated the Dasan station on Svalbard since 2002, and study was conducted using Arctic station.

Climatological Variability of Multisatellite-derived Sea Surface Temperature, Sea Ice Concentration, Chlorophyll-a in the Arctic Ocean (북극해에서 다중위성 자료를 이용한 표층수온, 해빙농도 및 클로로필의 장기 변화)

  • Recently, global climate change has caused a catastrophic event in the Arctic Ocean, directly and indirectly. The air-sea interaction has caused the significant sea-ice reduction in the Arctic Ocean, and has been accelerating the Arctic warming. Many scientists are worried about the Arctic environment change, suggesting that many of anomalous events will produce direct or indirect biophysical effects on the Arctic. The aim of this study is to understand the inter-annual variability of the Arctic Ocean in wide-view using multi-satellite-derived measurements. Sea surface temperature (SST) and sea ice concentration (SIC) data were obtained from Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST) and ECMWF ERA-Interim, respectively. Chlorophyll-a concentration (CHL) was obtained from Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS) and Aqua sensor from MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS-Aqua) sensor which has continuously observed since 1998. From 1998 to 2016 summer in the Arctic Ocean which was defined as regions over $60^{\circ}N$ in this study, there were three consequences that CHL increase ($0.15mg\;m^{-3}\;decade^{-1}$), SST warming ($0.43^{\circ}C\;decade^{-1}$) and SIC decrease ($-5.37%\;decade^{-1}$). While SST and SIC highly correlated each other (r = -0.76), a relationship between CHL and SIC was very low ($r={\pm}0.1$) because of data limitations. And a relationship between CHL and SST shows meaningful results ($r={\pm}0.66$) with regional differences.

Importance of Colloidal 210Pb and 210Po in Groundwater of Subterranean Estuary (해저 하구의 지하수 중 콜로이드 상 210Pb과 210Po의 중요성)

  • In order to evaluate the distributions of colloidal $^{210}Pb$ (half life = 22.2 years) and $^{210}Po$ (half life = 138 days) in subterranean estuary, we have measured $^{210}Pb$ and $^{210}Po$, for the first time, in the total dissolved (< $0.45{\mu}m$), true dissolved (<10 kDa), and colloidal ($10kDa-0.45{\mu}m$) phases in subterranean estuary of Hampyeong Bay in July 2010 and of Jeju Island in January 2011. The $^{210}Pb$ and $^{210}Po$ activities in groundwater were in the ranges of $0.21-2.52mBqL^{-1}$ and $0.12-2.07mBqL^{-1}$ for true dissolved phase and $0.10-1.71mBqL^{-1}$ and $0.03-0.97mBqL^{-1}$ for colloidal phase, respectively. The proportions of the colloidal phase to the total dissolved phase were $40{\pm}5%$ for $^{210}Pb$ and $28{\pm}5%$ for $^{210}Po$ in groundwater. This result indicates that colloids may play an important role in transporting trace elements through subterranean estuary into the coastal ocean.

Antioxidant Properties of Various Microorganisms Isolated from Arctic Lichen Stereocaulon spp. (북극 지의류 Stereocaulon spp로부터 분리한 여러 미생물의 항산화 성질)

  • Lichens are symbiotic organisms composed of fungi, algae, or cyanobacteria which are able to survive in extreme environmental conditions ranging from deserts to polar areas. Some lichen symbionts produce a wide range of secondary metabolites that have many biological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antitumor, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory etc. Among the symbionts of lichens, of the bacterial communities of lichen symbionts little is known. In this study, we isolated 4 microbial species from the Arctic lichen Stereocaulon spp. and evaluated their antioxidant properties using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl assay as well as 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethyl benzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) assay. Total phenolic contents and total flavonoid contents were also measured. A potent radical scavenging activity was detected in a number of the lichen extracts. Among the 4 species tested in this study, the ethyl acetate extract of Bosea vestrisii 36546(T) exhibited the strongest free radical scavenging activity, with an inhibition rate of 86.8% in DPPH and 75.2% in ABTS assays. Overall, these results suggest that lichen-bacteria could be a potential source of natural antioxidants.

Disturbance of University Campus Ecosystems by Alien Plants (외래식물에 의한 대학 교정 생태계의 교란)

  • Some of alien plants, which were introduced from foreign countries, have caused problems in Korea. Invasion of these alien plants in the ecosystem threatens the habitat of endemic species, reducing biodiversity, and causing a disturbance in the ecological system. In urbanized areas of campus universities, a diverse range of organisms were found and a comparison between the sites, near roads or housing sites were made because the campuses provided a large biotope. Although the campus had been exposed to interferences like gardening, it was also a place for most organisms to live in an active floating population due to free access. This research investigated the flora of alien plants that appeared in Beakseok University, Sangmyung University, Hoseo University and Dankook University, and relationship between the distribution of alien plants and the campus and green areas and distance from the highway. The total number of plant species and naturalized species found in the four universities was 189 and 43 species. Those of Dankook University were 136 and 35 species, Hoseo 108 and 25 species, Sangmyung 103 and 31 species, and Baekseok 97 and 26 species, respectively. The abundance of natural plants for each respective university tended to be higher as it became closer to the highway. Also, the closer the walking distance to the university, the greater the tendency for the degree of similarity to be higher. As a result, we may conclude that the distribution of alien plants and anthropogenic activities may be closely related.
