  • Two B. thuringiensis strains, which possess mosquitocidal activities, were isolated from Korean soil samples and named K-1205-1 and K-1381-1. Serological studies indicated that K-1205-1 and K-1381-1 belonged to B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (H3a3b3c) and subsp. aizawai (H7), respectively. K-1205-1 produced typical bipyramidal parasporal inclusions, but K-1381-1 produced irregular bipyramidal shape. Total plasmid DNA patterns analysis shewed that K-1205-1 and K- 1381-1 were different from their reference strains, subsp. kurstaki and subsp. aizawai, respectively, in high molecules, whereas their crystal protein patterns showed no difference. The cry gene contents of K-1205-1 and K-1381-1 were identical with those of the reference strains. Mosquitocidal activities of crystal proteins produced by K-1205-1 and K-1381-1 were significantly high by about 40-50 folds at $LC_50$ when compared to those of subsp. kurstaki and subsp. aizawai. Finally, in southern blot analysis using cry1A-type specific probe, K-1205-1 and K-1381-1 had different bands from subsp. kurstaki and subsp. aizawai, respectively. In conclusion, our results suggest that K-1205-1 and K-1381-1 appear to be new moquitocidal B. thuringiensis strains isolated from Korean soil.

  • At Otani University in Kyoto, Japan, there is a rubbed copy of Tripitaka Koreana, presumably printed in 1381. According to the postscript of the copy, written by Saek Lee himself, the rubbed copy was made at Haeinsa temple in 1381 and was kept at Sinluksa temple in Yeuju. The copy was delivered as a gift to Japan in 1414 and now is kept at the Library of Otani University. Although an approximate summary of the content of the copy was reported in the early 2000s after a basic survey, details of the copy, including the concrete format and packaging paper, are not known yet. In this paper a detailed survey of the copy is conducted on the 109 pages. The copy is divided into two parts: the wrapping and the inner pages. The wrapping paper is divided into yellow and brown colors depending on the material of the paper. The yellow colorwrapping paper was possibly made in 1381 at the time of the rubbed printing, and the brown wrapping paper was repaired after being moved to Japan. Using funds collected in February 1380, the copy of Gyeong(經), Yul(律), and Ron(論) chapters was printed in April 1381. Binding of the copy was completed in September, and the wrapping paper with the title in gold was made in October 1380. The box for keeping Buddhist scriptures was manufactured in November 1380. The copy was moved to Sinluksa temple in April 1382 and delivered to Japan in 1414. At Otani University, the copy is stored in separate rectangular boxes 32.1×25.3cm in size with a height of 23.6cm. The rectangular plate on the four sides is red in external color but black colorinside. The box for keeping Buddhist scriptures was probably made in 1381, but a partial repair was made later. Because of the difficulty of executing a detailed survey of the box for Buddhist scriptures, it is hard to find out its nation and period of production. We look forward to studying the copy as well as the box for Buddhist scriptures in future.

  • The application of composite steel-concrete slabs with profiled steel sheeting has increased, due to the various advantages in relation to reinforced concrete slabs such as, the reduced thickness, the reduced amount of lost formwork needed, as well as the speed of execution. The loss of longitudinal shear resistance is, generally, the governing design mode for simply supported spans of common lengths. For common distributed loadings, the composite behaviour is influenced by the partial shear connection between the concrete and the steel sheeting. The present research work is intended to contribute to improving the ultimate limit state behaviour of composite slabs using end anchorage. Eurocode 4, Part 1.1 (EN 1994-1-1) provides an analytical methodology for predicting the increase of longitudinal resistance, achieved by using shear studs welded through the steel sheeting as the end anchorage mechanism. The code does not supply an analytical methodology for other kinds of end anchorage so, additional tests or studies are needed to prove the effectiveness of these types of anchorage. The influence of end anchorage mechanisms provided by transverse rebars at the ends of simply supported composite slabs is analysed in this paper. Two experimental programmes were carried out, the first to determine the resistance provided by the new end anchorage mechanism and the second to analyse its influence on the behaviour of simply supported composite slabs.

  • The solvent sublation using ion pairs of metal-2-naphthoate(2-HNph) and tetrabutyl ammonium ($TBA^+$) ion has been studied for the concentration and determination of ultra trace Bi(III), In(III) and Tl(Ⅲ) ions in water samples. The partition coefficients ($K_p$) and the extraction percentages of 2-HNph and the ion pairs to methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) were obtained as basic data. After the ion pair $TBA^+$·M$(Nph)_4^-$ was formed in water samples, the analytes were concentrated by the solvent sublation and the elements were determined by GF-AAS. The pH of the sample solution, the amount of the ligand and counter ion added and stirring time were optimized for the efficient formation of the ion pair. The type and amount of optimum surfactant, bubbling time with nitrogen and the type of solvent were investigated for the solvent sublation as well. 10.0 mL of 0.1 M 2-HNph and 2.0 mL of 0.1 M $TBA^+$ were added to a 1.0 L sample solution at pH 5.0. After 2.0 mL of 0.2%(w/v) Triton X-100 was added, the ion pairs were extracted into 20.0 mL MIBK in a flotation cell by bubbling. The analytes were determined by a calibration curve method with measured absorbances in MIBK, and the recovery was 80-120%.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of pelvic, Lumbar spine and Cervical spine manipulation on the joint position sense in normal adults. Thirty normal adults were divided into an experimental group of 15 subjects and a control group of 15 subjects. The experimental group was treated with pelvic, Lumbar spine and Cervical spine manipulation with massage, whereas the control group received only massage. Both groups were evaluated in terms of joint position errors (JPEs) using a digital dual clinometer before and after the experiment. The comparison of the JPEs of the experimental group and the control group before and after the experiment showed that the experimental group's cervical spine results were significantly different in the flexion, left lateral flexion, and right rotation (p < .05) and lumbar spine results were significantly different in the flexion and extension (p < .05), but the control group's results were not statistically significant in all items (p > .05). The pelvic, lumbar spine and cervical spine manipulation makes an effect on the joint position sense in normal adults. The findings of this study suggest that the pelvis, lumbar spine and cervical spine manipulation improve the motor ability in people with low joint position sense.

  • Emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were investigated in the flue gas emitted from wood drying process for plywood manufacturing. The moisture content of raw timber was average 48%, and its density was $831.55kg/m^3$. But the moisture content of dried wood is needed less than around 10%, thus the moisture contents of flue gas should be remarkably high(about 18.2 V/V%). Therefore, the vapor in flue gas is equivalent to 320 ton-vapor/day when 1100 ton-wood/day is treated in the wood drying process. The temperature of flue gas ranges from $140^{\circ}C\;to\;150^{\circ}C$ in each dryer stack with exception of the input site of wood(about $110^{\circ}C$). The velocity of flue gas in each stack ranges from 1.7 to 9.7m/sec. In order to assess the concentrations and attribution rate of odorous compounds, it was analyzed about 40 VOCs in the flue gases. It was found that the major odorous compounds were 8 compounds, and the concentrations of major VOCs(ppm) were as follows; benzene: $0.054{\sim}0.052$, toluene: $1.011{\sim}2.547$, ethylbenzene: $0.472{\sim}2.023$, m,p-xylene: $0.504{\sim}3.245$, styrene: $0.015{\sim}0.148$, o-xylene : $0.271{\sim}1.097$, ethanol: $11.2{\sim}32.5$, ${\alpha}$-pinene: $0.908{\sim}10.578$, ${\beta}$-pinene: $0.982{\sim}14.278$. The attribution rate of terpenes (${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene) was about 60.56%, and that of aromatics and alcohols was about 22.77%, and 16.67%, respectively. It is suggested that the adequate control device should be used to control both the water soluble and non-soluble compounds because both compounds were mixed in flue gas.

  • In order to improve the availability of underwater sound by the fundamental data on the hearing ability, the auditory thresholds for the bambooleaf wrasse pseudolabrus japonicus were determined at 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz, 300Hz, 500Hz and 800Hz by heartbeat conditioning method using pure tones coupled with a delayed electric shock. The audible range of the bambooleaf wrasse extended from 80Hz to 800Hz with the best sensitivity around 100Hz and 200Hz. In addition, the auditory thresholds over 300Hz increased rapidly. The mean auditory thresholds of the bambooleaf wrasse at the test frequencies, 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz, 300Hz, 500Hz and 800Hz were 100dB, 95.1dB, 94.8dB, 109dB, 121dB and 125dB, respectively. Auditory critical ratios for the bambooleaf wrasse were measured using masking stimuli with the spectrum level range of about 70, 74, 78dB (0dB re $1{\mu}Pa/\sqrt{Hz}$). According to white noise level, the auditory thresholds increased as compared with thresholds in a quiet background noise. The Auditory masking by the white noise spectrum level was stared over about 60dB within 80~300Hz. Critical ratios to be measured at frequencies from 80Hz to 300Hz were minimum 33dB and maximum 39dB.

  • This study was conducted to find ways to improve people's perceptions to prevent and detect breast cancer. Health belief model(HBM) was used to examine the relationship between. risk perception of breast cancer, and benefit perception, and information seeking. In addition, the role of autonomous motives was included in the model. The results shows that the more people perceived cancer as dangerous, or perceived cancer screeing as beneficial, the more likely they seek relavant health information. Also, high autonomous motives showed positive effects on info seeking. Information seeking behaviors also had a positive impact on health screening intentions.
