Shear test procedure for concrete-dowel interaction was proposed along with determination of dowel support reaction factor or shear spring stiffness constant using the spreadsheet example. For this task, three AASHTO-type standard specimens were prepared to simulate behavior of the jointed concrete pavement. A side support system was adopted to minimize twisting of the test specimen which had been observed in a preliminary test. A typical elastic behavior of the dowel-concrete interaction was observed from several test loops of loading, unloading and reloading procedures. However load versus slab displacement represents to be nonlinear. Test results show that the dowel support reaction factor ranges from 550-880 GN/m3, which is 1.4-2.2 times greater than 407GN/m3 proposed by Yoder and Witczak. This is because less torsional distraction was occurred with the help of a side support system adopted in this experiment. The dowel support reaction factor or shear spring stiffness constant obtained from the procedures proposed in this paper may be used as a reference data for the structural analysis of jointed concrete pavement.
Field and laboratory investigations were performed for concrete pavement of the Yeongdong Expressway located in western part of the Kangwon Province where lots of the substantially large spatting distresses were found. The spatting distresses were investigated to the naked eye in the field, and splitting tensile strength, air void, and neutralization tests were performed for the cores obtained from the pavement. In addition, load transfers at joints and dynamic bearing capacities at slab centers were measured to identify the lowering of the structural capability of the pavement. It was judged that the investigated concrete slabs were affected by freezing and thawing action because the air voids of the cores were substantially low. Therefore, it was concluded that the low air voids affected the lots of the large spatting distress in the pavement located in the region of cold winter.
Dowel bars in the jointed concrete pavement are used to both provide load transfer across pavements joints and prevent the joint faulting leading to longer service life. On the contrary, the misplacement of dowel bar can provide negative results including the joint freezing(locking) that may cause the joint spatting and unexpected mid-slab cracking. The dowel bar can be placed using the assembly or dowel bar inserter (DBI) during the concrete pavement construction. In the domestic practice of the concrete pavement construction, the dowel bar is placed using the assembly method. This study primarily focuses on the comparison of these two dowel placement methods using the field data from the KHC test road in which both dowel placement methods have been applied to a certain length of the concrete pavement. The field data regarding the alignment of the dowel bars placed by both methods was collected using MIT-SCAN2, a nondestructive measuring equipment, and processed to compute Joint Score and Running Ave. Joint Score which are used as indicators of the dowel bar performance. The comparison of the methods for the dowel bar placement using these indicators shows that the DBI method provided much better alignment of the dowel bars reducing the risk of joint freezing than the assembly method. In order to improve the quality of the dowel bar placement using the assembly method, the current weak points of the assembly method including the fabrication, storage, and installation of dowel bar assembly were investigated and the solution was suggested. The improved dowel bar sets based on the suggested solution have been applied to an actual practice of the concrete pavement construction. The field data shows that the improved assembly method suggested in this study can highly reduce the risk of joint freezing.
A jointed plain concrete pavement(JPCP) slab was tested in Incheon International Airport construction work to study the early-age property of JPCP slab. The temperature and moisture data of the concrete slab had been collected and analyzed. The setting time of the concrete was decided by using the maturity method. The initial setting time is 2 hours 40 minutes after the placement of the slab. The investigation and analysis of the slab began from the initial setting time. The strains of different locations and different depths of the slab show different variation character.

This study focused on the development of an alternative stress estimation procedure to instantly calculate the critical stresses bonded concrete pavement. Closed form analysis is commonly used to analyze pavement structures. This type of analysis assumes linearelastic material properties and static loading conditions. The well-known ILLI-SLAB finite element program was used for the analysis. Bonded concrete overlay analyzed the stress distribution, behavior and load carrying capacity under track load is made evaluation standard of bonded concrete overlay. In the study, the following results were derived ; The properties of strength is that compress and 3-point bending strength of existing pavement is deteriorated with $184kg/cm^2$, $59kg/cm^2$ but compress and splitting tensile strength of overlay is satisfied with $465kg/cm^2$, $45kg/cm^2$. Load transfers is happen at adjacent slab by interlocking under track load. The stress distribution under interior, corner and edge load is described high loading position surrounding then loading position.

Dowel bar in the jointed concrete pavement has been designed and constructed by Foreign standard and experience in Korea. The behavior of dowel bar is explored based in analyze of 3-Dimension Finite Element Method. To evaluate behavior of dowel bar compared Timoshenko theory and 3-Dimensional Finite Element Method. Based on the 3-Dimension Finite Element Method analyze the dowel-bar optimum position that can reduce deflections of slabs by considering wheel path distributions was suggest in this study.
PURPOSES : This study presents the noise level and frequency characteristics investigated in the national highways with the consideration of various measuring conditions and/or methods. METHODS : The noise levels on the asphalt concrete pavement(ACP) and the jointed plain concrete pavement(JPCP) of the national highway were measured and analysed with respect to three variables, i.e., pavement type, surface condition, and measurement distance. The PASS-By method is utilized for the noise measurement and then using CPB spectrum analysis method with 1/3 octave bandwidth, the noise levels and frequency characteristics were calculated for two-second periods before and after the peak noise. RESULTS : Depending on the pavement type, the noise level was changed as the average noise levels are 73.3dB(A) and 78.3dB(A) for ACP and JPCP, respectively. With respect to the effect of surface condition, the average noise levels for crack H(high), M(medium), and L (low) sections are 77.4dB(A), 77.4dB(A), and 78.1dB(A), respectively. Regarding the measurement distance, 1.2meter difference in measuring location reduces 1.6dB(A) of noise level; the average noise levels at 5.3m and 7.5m from the centerline of outer lane are 72.8dB(A) and 71.2dB(A), respectively. It should be noted that the noise levels are slightly different as a function of vehicle speed and type. However, the overall trends for each case was similar. It was found that the domain frequency bands for ACP and JPCP were 400Hz~2000Hz and 500Hz~2000Hz, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the analysis with the measured noise date from national highway, it was concluded that the noise level and frequency band vary depending on the various conditions. It was also found that some variables significantly affect the noise level while others do not. With further systematic investigation, the comprehensive noise characteristics on the national highway can be achieved. Using such database, it is possible to develop the fundamental noise reduction technology.
Deflections of jointed concrete pavements at test road are monitored during 48 hours. And methods of calibration with respect to curling deflections are suggested. Relations between deflection ratio of center to joint at test time and deflection ratio of center at test time to center at reference time are described by regression. From deflections at test time, deflections transformed to reference time which gives minimum deflections in a day are estimated through regression curves and concluded to propose as a alternative method of curling calibration with more data accumulation.
One of the most important factors accounting for the structural capacity of concrete pavement is load transfer efficiency. Load transfer efficiency is affected by slab temperature gradient, construction of dowel bars, degree of aging, and crack width. The purpose of this study is to determine the patterns of load transfer efficiency of concrete pavement; to determine the factors that affect the load transfer efficiency; and to present the proper measuring method of load transfer efficiency. As a result from this study, load transfer efficiency was affected primarily by the average temperature in concrete slab. Load transfer efficiency decreased with decreasing temperature and increasing crack width. For the sections with dowel bars, there were little differences in load transfer efficiency regardless of temperature changes. For the sections without dowel bars, however, there on great losses of load transfer efficiency at low temperatures. For the old pavement, even in the sections with dowel bars, the load transfer efficiency reduced as the temperature dropped For the sections in this study, 1.4% reduction of the load transfer efficiency was observed for each $1^{\circ}C$ drop in the slab temperature.
