  • Purpose: We evaluated the results of treatment and clinical symptoms of 11 cases of synovial chondromatosis in the ankle joint. Material and Method: From February 2001 to May 2008, 11 cases with synovial chondromatosis involving ankle joint underwent surgical treatment. There were 5 males and 6 females. The average age at surgery was 51 years. The average follow-up period was 42 months. Duration from onset of symptom to treatment was 117 months. Chief complaints of patients, 9 cases were pain and 1 case was mass like lesion, 1 case was found on x-ray. Preoperatively, all cases were evaluated on simple x-ray, 4 cases on CT, 4 cases on MRI and 1 case on ultrasonogram. 10 cases underwent synovectomy and loose body removal. 5 cases of 10 cases underwent open synovectomy and loose body removal and arthrosocpic surgery. 4 cases of 10 cases underwent only open synovectomy and loose body removal and 1 case of 10 cases underwent only arthroscopic surgery. 1 case underwent tibiotalar arthrodesis. Results: The location of loose bodies was 7 cases on posterior and 4 cases on anterior and 4 case on lateral and 3 cases on multiple site. Postoperatively, all patients showed marked clinical improvement and had subjective satisfaction except reoperation 2 cases and arthrodesis 1 case. AOFAS score of all patients was average 82.2. Conclusion: Clinical results of the synovial chondromatosis of ankle joint were satisfactory. More accurate preoperative evaluation is required to achieve prevention of postoperative recurrence and better outcome.

  • In this paper, we propose a gait generation method for a quadruped robot to walk efficiently on the slope, which uses the waist joint of a quadruped robot. We derive the kinematic model of a quadruped robot with waist joint using the Denavit-Hartenberg representation method and the algebraic method. In addition, the gaits are generated based on the wave gait. In the proposed gait generation method, first in order to alleviate the mechanical restriction and the reduction of the stride, we determine the appropriate waist joint angle according to the slope degree, and then decide the location of the tiptoe of a quadruped robot by exploring the workspace. Finally, through computer simulations, we verify the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.

  • X-ray cross-sectional image-based inspection technique is one of the most useful methods to inspect the brazing joints of heat exchanger. Through X-ray cross-sectional image acquisition, image processing, and defect inspection, the defects of brazing joints can be detected. This paper presents a method to judge the type of detected defects automatically, and to display them three-dimensionally. The defect type is classified as unconnected defect, void, and so on, based on location, size, and shape information of defect. Three-dimensional display which is realized using OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) will be helpful to understand the overall situation including location, size, shape of the defects in a test object.

  • The reduction of airborne and structure-borne noise of a shipboard pump for a navel ship is very important because the noise levels of the pump must not exceed criteria such as MIL-STD. In this paper, several practical examples of reducing the noise levels are presented. The examples show that the inadequate rotor-balancing and shaft-alignment results in the increase of the structure-borne noise on all lower mounts. It is also found that the unequal loading on mounts can cause the dramatically increasing the noise levels on certain local positions. Since the piping system arrangement such as valve location, flexible joint, and elbow location affects on the noise measurement, care must be taken to minimize the unnecessary noise from the piping system.

  • This paper presents an easily used graphical procedure for simultaneous estimation of the index, skewness, scale, and location parameters of the stable laws. First, the index $\alpha$ and skewness $\beta$ are estimated through the joint use of a tail length statistic $\widetilde{K_t}$ and a skewness statistic $\widetilde{K_s}$, both of which are functions of order statistics. Next, the function of order statistics needed for estimation of scale $\sigma$ and location $\mu$ are determined from a nomogram indexed on the estimates of $\alpha$ and $\beta$. Some applications and examples are provided.

  • When a mechanical structure is driven by stationary wide band random point forces, the resulting vibration depends upon the number, location, and joint statistical properties of the exciting forces. In this study, under the assumption of light damping, an approximate procedure for analyzing plates is briefly outlined. The effects of number, location and correlation of the force field on the vibration level are then investigated for various cases in which random point forces with band limited white noise are applied, and the optimal spacing between input forces that produces a relative minimum in the vibration response is predicted.

  • In this study, reduction of airborne and structure-borne noise of naval ship pump is presented. Since piping system arrangement such as valve location, flexible joint, pipe diameter and elbow location, discharge basin affect greatly on the noise measurement, care must be taken to minimize the unnecessary noise from the piping system. It is shown that structure-borne noise of the motor with single resilient mount system exceeds criterion. Therefore, it is concluded that double resilient mount system is inevitable. Two kinds of mount is studied for upper mount; spring and rubber type. Although both mounts show good performance at low frequency including rpm frequency, 63Hz, spring mount is found to be inadequate at high frequency, because spring coil acts as a path for SBN.

  • Spot welding palys a key role in increasing productivity and weight reduction of the final products. This paper proposes a systematic approach on the design of spot weld configuration, dealing with the requried number and location of spot weld joints under the given design parameters, such as the applied loads, lap area, and individual spot weld strength. The optimal design of a spot-welded joint is postulated as a state when the safety factors of all spot weld points (i) are evenly distributed and (ii) reach maximum value. A CAD program is developed to arrange the optimal location of each spot weld based on the derived objective function and constraints. The CAD tool integrates the optimization procedure with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) code through an interface. The interface automatically provides geometrical data and mesh configuration for different spot weld locations to FEA model. It also extracts the transmitted load of each spot weld from the FEA code, and allows the optimization code predict an improved arrangement of spot weld locations. The feasibility of the developed approach is demonstrated by the selected examples.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to confirm that the cross-country ski sprint course in PyeongChang, where the 2018 Winter Olympics course was to utilize wearable devices equipped with inertial measurement unit (IMU), global positioning system (GPS) and heart rates sensor. Method: For the data collection, two national level cross-country (XC) skiers performed classic technique on the entire sprint course. We analyzed cycle characteristics, range of motion on double poling (DP) technique, average velocity, and displacement of 3 points according to the terrain. Results: The absolute cycle time gradually decreased during starting, middle and finish sections. While the length of the DP increased and the heart rates tended to increase for men skier. In addition, the results indicated that range of motion of knee joint during starting and finish section decreased more than middle section. The errors of latitude and longitude data collected through GPS were within 3 m from 3 points. Conclusion: Through the first case study in Korea, which analyzed the location and condition of XC skiers in the entire sprint course in real time, confirmed that feedback was available in the field using various wearable sensors.

  • The integration of intelligent robots into manufacturing systems should positively impact the product quality and productivity. A new theory of object location and recognition using the supporting plane is presented. The unknown supporting points are determined by image coordinates, known camera parameters, and joint coordinates of the robot manipulators. This is developed by using the geometrical interpretation of perspective projection and the geometrical constraints of industrial environments. This can be applied to solve typical robot vision problems such as determination of position, orientation, and recognition of objects.
