  • General measure in the reliability is the k-terminal reliability, which is the probability that the specified vertices are connected by the working edges. To compute the k-terminal reliability components are usually assumed to be statistically independent. In this study the modeling and analysis of the k-terminal reliability are investigated when dependency among components is considered. As the size of the network increases, the number of the joint probability parameter to represent the dependency among components is increasing exponentially. To avoid such a difficulty the structured-event-based-reliability model (SERM) is presented. This model uses the combination of the network topology (physical representation) and reliability block diagram (logical representation). This enables us to represent the dependency among components in a network form. Computational algorithms for the k-terminal reliability in SERM are based on the factoring algorithm Two features of the ractoring algorithm are the reliability preserving reduction and the privoting edge selection strategy. The pivoting edge selction strategy is modified by two different ways to tackle the replicated edges occuring in SERM. Two algorithms are presented according to each modified pivoting strategy and illustrated by numerical example.

  • We propose a new content-based image retrieval using a block color co-occurrence matrix (BCCM) and pattern correlogram. In the proposed method, the color feature vectors are extracted by using BCCM that represents the probability of the co-occurrence of two mean colors within blocks. Also the pattern feature vectors are extracted by using pattern correlogram which is combined with spatial correlation of pattern. In the proposed pattern correlogram method. after block-divided image is classified into 48 patterns with respect to the change of the RGB color of the image, joint probability between the same pattern from the surrounding blocks existing at the fixed distance and the center pattern is calculated. Experimental results show that the proposed method can outperform the conventional methods as regards the precision and the size of the feature vector dimension.

  • The military communication equipment is required the high reliability for operating adequate functions under severe conditions. This reliability is the essential element for the quality of the product, for the uncontrolled factors, such as the clearance, damage of the material, the reduction of stiffness, which are the designer is unable to handle. In this paper, the uncertainty for the design was supposed to the probability model for the military communication equipment, and the average of the objective function was minimized for reducing design uncertainty. The reliability-based design optimization which was implemented the limit state function was formulated into the mathematical model, so the reliable optimized structure was implemented than the base-line design.

Joint TAS and Power Allocation for IHDAF Relaying M2M Cooperative Networks

  • The outage probability (OP) performance of multiple-relay-based incremental hybrid decode-amplify-forward (IHDAF) relaying mobile-to-mobile (M2M) networks with transmit antenna selection (TAS) over N-Nakagami fading channels is investigated in this paper. The closed-form expressions for approximate OP of the optimal and suboptimal TAS schemes are derived. The power allocation problem is formulated for performance optimization. Then the OP performance under different conditions is evaluated through numerical simulations to verify the analysis. The simulation results showed that optimal TAS scheme has a better OP performance than suboptimal TAS scheme; the power-allocation parameter has an important influence on the OP performance.

A Performance Modeling of Wireless Sensor Networks as a Queueing Network with On and Off Servers

  • In this work, we consider performance modeling of a wireless sensor network with a time division multiple access (TDMA) media access protocol with slot reuse. It is assumed that all the nodes are peers of each other and they have two modes of operation, active and sleep modes. We model the sensor network as a Jackson network with unreliable nodes with on and off states. Active and sleep modes of sensor nodes are modeled with on and off states of unreliable nodes. We determine the joint distribution of the sensor node queue lengths in the network. From this result, we derive the probability distribution of the number of active nodes and blocking probability of node activation. Then, we present the mean packet delay, average sleep period of a node and the network throughput. We present numerical results as well as simulation results to verify the analysis. Finally, we discuss how the derived results may be used in the design of sensor networks.

Copula-based common cause failure models with Bayesian inferences

  • In general, common cause failures (CCFs) have been modeled with the assumption that components within the same group are symmetric. This assumption reduces the number of parameters required for the CCF probability estimation and allows us to use a parametric model, such as the alpha factor model. Although there are various asymmetric conditions in nuclear power plants (NPPs) to be addressed, the traditional CCF models are limited to symmetric conditions. Therefore, this paper proposes the copulabased CCF model to deal with asymmetric as well as symmetric CCFs. Once a joint distribution between the components is constructed using copulas, the proposed model is able to provide the probability of common cause basic events (CCBEs) by formulating a system of equations without symmetry assumptions. In addition, Bayesian inferences for the parameters of the marginal and copula distributions are introduced and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms are employed to sample from the posterior distribution. Three example cases using simulated data, including asymmetry conditions in total failure probabilities and/or dependencies, are illustrated. Consequently, the copula-based CCF model provides appropriate estimates of CCFs for asymmetric conditions. This paper also discusses the limitations and notes on the proposed method.

  • 90도 위상 천이기나 필터와 같은 불완전한 시스템 요소에 의해 생성되는 I(inphase)축과 Q(quadrature)축 간의 불균형은 피할 수 없는 물리적 현상으로 동기 변/복조 시스템(coherent modulation/demodulation system) 구현에 있어서 성능 열화를 유발한다. 본 논문에서는 AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise) 채널 환경에서 수신기의 I/Q 불균형이 존재하는 경우, DVB(digital video broadcasting)-S2 시스템에서 사용되는 변조방식에 대한 정확하고 일반화된 심벌 오류 확률을 2차원 결합 가우시안 Q-함수(two-dimensional joint Gaussian Q-function)의 선형 결합(linear combination)의 형태로 유도한다.

  • 세 처리, 세 기간을 갖는 3$\times$3 교차실험에서 c($\geq$3)개의 범주를 가진 자료의 분석에 사용될 수 있는 주변확률모형을 제안한다. 이 모형은 Kenward and Jones(1991)의 결합확률 모형의 대조물 (counterpart)로 사용될 수 있고 2항 변수를 갖는 3$\times$3 교차실험에서 처리 효과를 분석하기 위한 Balagtas et al(1995)의 일변량주변로지트모형의 일반화이다. 세 종류의 링크변화를 사용하여 주변확률모형방정식의 구성된다. 링크변환행렬과 모형행렬을 구성하는 방법이 주어지고, 모수의 추정이 논의된다. 제안된 모형을 Kenward and Jones 자료의 분석에 응용한다.

  • 소프트웨어를 구성하는 모듈들은 각 모듈에 주어지는 업무들이 동시에 처리될 수 있도록 멀티태스킹이 가능하도록 개발되며, 또한 처리중인 업무들은 완전처리된 업무들과 처리중 모듈고장으로 완전처리 되지 않는 불완전 처리업무로 세분화한다. 이러한 경우 여러 모듈에 동시에 업무가 주어졌을 때, Farlie [11]의 결합확률분포를 기반으로 모듈간의 의존성을 고려하여 업무의 완전처리확률을 평가할 수 있는 모형을 제안하며, 이를 통하여 모듈의존성 모수 값이 커질수록 소프트웨어에 주어진 업무의 완전처리확률은 점점 커짐을 보이고자 한다.

Engineering criticality analysis on an offshore structure using the first- and second-order reliability method

  • Due to the uncertainties related to the flaw assessment parameters, such as flaw size, fracture toughness, loading spectrum and so on, the probability concept is preferred over deterministic one in flaw assessment. In this study, efforts have been made to develop the reliability based flaw assessment procedure which combines the flaw assessment procedure of BS7910 and first-and second-order reliability methods (FORM/SORM). Both crack length and depth of semi-elliptical surface crack at weld toe were handled as random variable whose probability distribution was defined as Gaussian with certain means and standard deviations. Then the limit state functions from static rupture and fatigue perspective were estimated using FORM and SORM in joint probability space of crack depth and length. The validity of predicted limit state functions were checked by comparing it with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. It was confirmed that the developed methodology worked perfectly in predicting the limit state functions without time-consuming Monte Carlo simulation.
