  • We estimated the nitrogen and phosphorus loads of wintering waterfowl feces in Lake Paldang. The average number of individual birds that belonged to Anatidae species was 2,852.5 from 2005 to 2008 in Lake Paldang. The number of Anatidae reached 97.4% of the total number of individual birds. For evaluating the loading amounts of N and P by waterfowl to Lake Paldang, the feces dry weight (g/day) of each Anatidae species was estimated by multiplying the body weight of the each bird by 2.25% and assumed that N and P in feces contain 1.46% and 0.33%, respectively. We assigned probability 1/3 to the nutrient decomposition of the bird feces in water. The nitrogen loading by wintering waterfowl feces was 0.06 ton/year and the phosphorus loading was 0.001 ton/year. These amounts were 0.0002% of all N loadings and 0.0001% of all P loadings. Therefore the wintering waterfowl might have little impact on the water quality in terms of eutrophication in Lake Paldang.

  • Biological systems offer unique principles for the design and fabrication of engineering platforms (i.e., popularly known as "Biomimetics") for various applications in many fields. For example, the lotus leaves exhibit unique surfaces consisting of evenly distributed micro and nanostructures. These unique surfaces of lotus leaves have the ability of superhydrophobic property to avoid getting wet by the surrounding water (i.e., Lotus effect). Inspired by the surface topographies of lotus leaves, the artificial superhydrophobic surfaces were developed using various micro- and nanoengineering. Here, we propose new platforms that can control hydrophilic and hydrophobic property of surfaces by mimicking micro- and nanosurfaces of various natural leaves such as common camellia, hosta plantaginea, and lotus. Using capillary force lithography technology and polymers in combination with biomimetic design principle, the unique micro- and nanostructures mimicking natural surfaces of common camellia, hosta plantaginea, and lotus were designed and fabricated. We also demonstrated that the replicated polymeric surfaces had different hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties according to the mimicking the natural leaf surfaces, which could be used as a simple, but powerful methodology for design and fabrication of controlled hydrophilic and hydrophobic platforms for various applications in the field of agriculture and biological engineering.

  • This paper presents position control of multicopter using nonlinear dynamic model inversion in singular perturbation. Multicopter dynamics are developed and separated into the fast time-scale variables, related with the inner-loop design, and the slow time-scale variables, related with the outer-loop design. The final design is evaluated in 6-DOF simulation. The results show accurate position tracking performance.

  • The effects of algal inoculation on chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) removal, and indigenous bacterial dynamics were investigated in municipal wastewater. Experiments were conducted with municipal wastewater inoculated with either Chlorella vulgaris AG10032, Selenastrum gracile UTEX 325, or Scenedesmus quadricauda AG 10308. C. vulgaris and S. gracile as fast growing algae in municipal wastewater, performed high COD and TN removal in contrast to Sc. quadricauda. The indigenous bacterial dynamics revealed by 16S rRNA gene amplification showed different bacterial shifts in response to different algal inoculations. The dominant bacterial genera of either algal case were characterized as heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria. Our results suggest that selection of indigenous bacteria that symbiotically interact with algal species is important for better performance of wastewater treatment.

  • In this paper, we deal with the static modeling of a continuum robot that can perform surgical interventions. The proposed continuum robot is made of stainless steel wires and a multi lumen flexible tube using a thermoplastic elastomer. This continuum robot could be most severely deformed in physical contact with narrow external environments, when a lateral external force acts at the distal tip of the continuum robot. In order to predict the shape and displacement under the lateral external force loading, the forward kinematics, the statics modeling, the force-moment equilibrium equation, and the virtual work-energy method of the continuum robot are described. The deflection displacements were calculated using the virtual work-energy method, and the results were compared with the displacement obtained by the conventional cantilever beam theories. In conclusion, the proposed static modeling and the virtual work-energy method can be used in arrhythmia procedure simulations.

  • 2,097 deaths out of 5,229 by traffic accident occurred by vehicle to vehicle crash and 855 deaths out of 2,097 occurred at side crash in 2011. Korean government adopted New Car Assessment Program to reduce the wounded and deaths at traffic accident in 1999 and side impact test has been added in 2003. 43 out of 53 vehicles tested in NCAP side impact rated 4 and 5 stars means the highest occupant protection. In this study three small class vehicles have been tested according to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's side crashworthiness test protocol. IIHS test protocol uses 1,500kg moving barrier rather than NCAP's 950kg and the occupant protection rated Good, Acceptable, Marginal and Poor based on injury measure, structural integrity and head protection.

  • Microalgae have been regarded as a natural resource for sustainable materials and fuels, as well as for removal of nutrients and micropollutants from wastewater, and their interaction with bacteria in wastewater is a critical factor to consider because of the microbial diversity and complexity in a variety of wastewater conditions. Despite their importance, very little is known about the ecological interactions between algae and bacteria in a wastewater environment. In this study, we characterized the wastewater bacterial community in response to the growth of a Selenastrum gracile UTEX 325 population in a real municipal wastewater environment. The Roche 454 GS-FLX Titanium pyrosequencing technique was used for indepth analysis of amplicons of 16S rRNA genes from different conditions in each reactor, with and without the algal population. The algal growth reduced the bacterial diversity and affected the bacterial community structure in the wastewater. The following in-depth analysis of the deep-sequenced amplicons showed that the algal growth selectively stimulated Sphingobacteria class members, especially the Sediminibacterium genus population, in the municipal wastewater environment.

  • Tail wing is important to designing of civil aircrafts, because it is responsible for aircraft stability and control. Tail wing has a role in aircraft control and makes aircraft fly stably without any pilot control input. Also, designing of tail wing determine trim drag force in whole aircraft. Center of gravity(CG) of aircraft travels with various effects as placement of passenger's seats, location of cargo bay, etc. In designing horizontal tail volume, aircraft CG travel has to be considered to have margin so that it should be sized to provide adequate stability and control for the airplane's entire CG range throughout the flight envelope. Finally, it is essential to have sufficient elevator control to perform stall at forward CG for all flaps down configurations. Such stalls establish the FAR stall speed which airplane take-off and landing performance. This paper deals with the process for tail wing design regarding the aircraft CG travel and results for 95-seat type turboprop aircraft.
