  • Many problems arising in science and engineering require the numerical solution of a system of n nonlinear equations in n unknowns: (1) given F : $R^{n}$ $\rightarrow$ $R^{n}$ , find $x_{*}$ $\epsilon$ $R^{n}$ / such that F($x_{*}$) = 0. Nonlinear problems are generally solved by iteration. Davidson [3] and Broyden [1] introduced the methods which had led to a large amount of research and a class of algorithm. This work has been called by the quasi-Newton methods, secant updates, or modification methods. Newton's method is the classical method for the problem (1) and quasi-Newton methods have been proposed to circumvent computational disadvantages of Newton's method.(omitted)

  • A numerical method for the assessment and correction of tunnel wall interference effects on forced-oscillation testing is presented. The method is based on the wall pressure signature method using computed wall pressure distributions. The wall pressure field is computed using unsteady three-dimensional full Navier-Stokes solver for a 70-degree pitching delta wing in a wind tunnel. Approximately-factorized alternate direction implicit (AF-ADI) scheme is advanced in time by solving block tri-diagonal matrices. The algebraic Baldwin-Lomax turbulence, model is included to simulate the turbulent flow effect. Also, dual time sub-iteration with, local, time stepping is implemented to improve the convergence. The computed wall pressure field is then imposed as boundary conditions for Euler re-simulation to obtain the interference flow field. The static computation shows good agreement with experiments. The dynamic computation demonstrates reasonable physical phenomena with a good convergence history. The effects of the tunnel wall in upwash and blockage are analyzed using the computed interference flow field for several reduced frequencies and amplitudes. The corrected results by pressure signature method agree well with the results of free air conditions.

  • This paper presents an analysis of the electromagnetic field in the 3D microwave oven using computational method. The model is accounted the real shape, including the formings, input waveguide with the magnetron, tray, and so on. For quantisation of this problem, Galerkin method with the Nedelec's edge basic functions is used. The system of linear algebraic equations is solved by the iteration method. The simulation results were compared with the experimental results.

  • Small-signal stability analysis of large power systems needs the calculation of eigenvalues. But we use the partial eigenanalysis to calculate rightmost eigenvalues, since system matrix is very large. This paper proposes the Arnoldi-Chebyshev method identifying rightmost eigenvalues. This method constructs an optimal ellipse containing unwanted eigenvalues and use the Chebyshev iteration to get approximate eigenvetors corresponding to wanted eigenvalues, and then applies the modified Arnoldi method to calculate wanted eigenvalues.

  • A geometrically non-linear finite element formulation of spatial cable networks is presented using three cable elements. Firstly, derivation procedures of tangent stiffness and mass matrices for the space truss element and the elastic catenary cable element, and the isoparametric cable element are summarized. The load incremental method based on Newton-Raphson iteration method and the dynamic relaxation method are presented in order to determine the initial static state of cable nets subjected to self-weights and support motions. Furthermore, static non-linear analysis of cable structures under additional live loads are performed based on the initial configuration. Challenging example problems are presented and discussed in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the present finite element method and investigate static non-linear behaviors of cable nets.

  • Internal waves are computed using a ghost fluid method on an unstructured grid. Discontinuities in density and dynamic pressure are captured in one cell without smearing or oscillations along a multimaterial interface. A time-accurate incompressible Navier-Stokes/Euler solver is developed based on a three-point backward difference formula for the physical time marching. Artificial compressibility is introduced with respect to pseudotime and an implicit method is used for the pseudotime iteration. To track evolution of an interface, a level set function is coupled with the governing equations. Roe's flux difference splitting method is used to calculate numerical fluxes of the coupled equations. To get higher order accuracy, dependent variables are reconstructed based on gradients which are calculated using Gauss theorem. For each edge crossing an interface, dynamic pressure is assigned for a ghost node to enforce the continuity of total pressure along the interface. Solitary internal waves are computed and the results are compared with other computational and experimental results.

  • In this paper, we present a method for clustering incomplete Microarray data using alternating optimization in which a prior imputation method is not required. To reduce the influence of imputation in preprocessing, we take an alternative optimization approach to find better estimates during iterative clustering process. This method improves the estimates of missing values by exploiting the cluster Information such as cluster centroids and all available non-missing values in each iteration. The clustering results of the proposed method are more significantly relevant to the biological gene annotations than those of other methods, indicating its effectiveness and potential for clustering incomplete gene expression data.

  • In this paper we consider three different cases and we apply Variational Approach (VA) to solve the non-natural vibrations and oscillations. The method variational approach does not demand small perturbation and with only one iteration can lead to high accurate solution of the problem. Some patterns are presented for these three different cease to show the accuracy and effectiveness of the method. The results are compared with numerical solution using Runge-kutta's algorithm and another approximate method using energy balance method. It has been established that the variational approach can be an effective mathematical tool for solving conservative nonlinear dynamical equations.

  • This paper presents the development of estimation model and control method based on the new robot vision. This proposed control method is accomplished using the sequential estimation scheme that permits placement of the rigid body in each of the two-dimensional image planes of monitoring cameras. Estimation model with six parameters is developed based on the model that generalizes known 4-axis scara robot kinematics to accommodate unknown relative camera position and orientation, etc. Based on the estimated parameters, depending on each camera the joint angle of robot is estimated by the iteration method. The method is experimentally tested in two ways, the estimation model test and a three-dimensional rigid body placement task. Three results show that control scheme used is precise and robust. This feature can open the door to a range of application of multi-axis robot such as assembly and welding.

  • In this paper, nonlinear displacements of laminated composite beams are investigated under non-uniform temperature rising with temperature dependent physical properties. Total Lagrangian approach is used in conjunction with the Timoshenko beam theory for nonlinear kinematic model. Material properties of the laminated composite beam are temperature dependent. In the solution of the nonlinear problem, incremental displacement-based finite element method is used with Newton-Raphson iteration method. The distinctive feature of this study is nonlinear thermal analysis of Timoshenko Laminated beams full geometric non-linearity and by using finite element method. In this study, the differences between temperature dependent and independent physical properties are investigated for laminated composite beams for nonlinear case. Effects of fiber orientation angles, the stacking sequence of laminates and temperature on the nonlinear displacements are examined and discussed in detail.
