  • Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are a typical group of microorganisms, and the recent advances in laboratory technology and medicine has dramatically modified their significance in medical practice. CoNS, which were previously classified as normal bacterial flora, have recently been reported to be associated with serious infectious diseases, such as surgical wound infection or periprosthetic joint infection. Representative CoNS include Staphylococcus epidermidis, S. haemolyticus, and S. saprophyticus, which are known to cause serious problems in biomaterial-based and prosthetic device infections, as well as to cause simple urinary tract infections in sexually active women. Over the last decade, the clinical isolation rate of CoNS has been increasing, and antibiotic resistance has also been occurring. This review aimed to investigate the incidence of CoNS infection and to use the results as basic data for the management of CoNS, with a focus on the isolation rate and antibiotic resistance in clinical surgery.

  • Salmonella spp. are one of the most common bacteria that causes heavy losses in swine industry and have implications for public health. In this study, the correlation between Salmonella seroprev-alence on farms and the isolation rate from slaughtered pigs was analyzed and the antimicrobial resistance of the isolated Salmonella spp. was investigated. A total of 3,001 serum samples for ELISA were collected from 17 farms during two consecutive years (2012-2013). The mean values of ELISA OD% for each 8 age groups were as follows; gilt 27.83 (n=472), sow 23.75 (n=367), 150 days (d) of pig 16.53 (n=278), 130 d 11.87 (n=366), 100 d 9.46 (n=378), 20 d 9.17 (n=394), 70 d 6.56 (n=382), 40 d 3.72 (n=364). From July 2013 to January 2014, a total of 53 (8.0%) Salmonella strains were isolated from 665 slaughtered pigs shipped from those 17 farms. The mean values of ELISA OD% for each age groups serum samples that were collected in the second half of 2013 showed a positive correlation at 100 d (0.61, P<0.05), 130 d (0.45, P<0.1) with the isolation rate of Salmonella spp. in the slaughtered pigs. All the isolates were identified by a real-time PCR and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. As a result, the predominant serovar was S. Typhimurium (52.8%) and there were 15 strains showing their own antimicrobial resistance pattern. All strains were susceptible to amoxicillin, cefepime, ciprofloxacin and some of them were resistant to streptomycin and tetracycline (60%), ampicillin (53.3%), chloramphenicol (33.3%), respectively.

  • A comparision was made on the influence of BPSG flow temperatures on the electrical properties in submicron CMOS DRAMs containing two BPSG layers. Three different combinations of BPSG flow temperature such as $850^{\circ}C/850^{\circ}C,\;850^{\circ}C/900^{\circ}C,\;and\;900^{\circ}C/900^{\circ}C$ were employed and analyzed in terms of threshold, breakdown and isolation voltage along with sheet resistance and contact resistance. In case of $900^{\circ}C/900^{\circ}C$ flow, the threshold voltage of NMOS was decreased rapidly in channel length less than $0.8\mu\textrm{m}$ with no noticeable change in PMOS and a drastic decrease in breakdown voltages of NMOS and PMOS was observed in channel length less than and equal to $0.7\mu\textrm{m}$ and $0.8\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. Little changes in threshold and breakdown voltages of NMOS and PMOS, however, were shown down to channel length of $0.6\mu\textrm{m}$ in case of $850^{\circ}C/850^{\circ}C$ flow. The isolation voltage was increased with decreasing BPSG flow temperature. A significant increase in the sheet resistance and contact resistance was noticeable with decreasing BPSG flow temperature from $900^{\circ}C$ to $850^{\circ}C$. All these observations were rationalized in terms of dopant diffusion and activation upon BPSG flow temperature. Some suggestions for improving contact resistance were made.

  • Heavy metals and metalloids removal can be considered as one of the most important world challenges because of their toxicity and direct impact on human health. Many processes have been introduced but biological processes of remediation seem to offer the most suitable solution in terms of efficiency and low cost. Actinobacteria constitute one of the major microbial populations in soil, and this can be attributed to their adaptive morphological structure as well as their exceptional metabolic power. Among microbes, actinobacteria are morphologic intermediate between fungi and bacteria. Studies on microbial diversities in metal contaminated lands have shown that actinobacteria may constitute a dominantly active microbiota in addition to ${\alpha}$ Proteobacteria. Furthermore, isolation studies have shown metal removal mechanisms which are reminiscent of notable multiresistant strains, such as Cupriavidus metallidurans. Apart from members of genus Streptomyces, which produce more than 90% of commercialized antibiotics, and the nitrogen fixing Frankia, little attention has been given to other members of this phylum. This is because of difficult culture condition requirements and maintenance. In this review, we focused on specific isolation of actinobacteria and their potential applications in metal bioremediation and plant growth promotion.

  • We report the isolation of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium phage type DT104 (CCARM 8104) from swine in Korea. The CCARM 8104 isolate was resistant to nalidixic acid and showed reduced susceptibility to quinolones. The CCARM 8104 isolate had a missense mutation, Asp87Asn, in the quinolone resistance-determining region in gyrA and produced PSE-1. The CCARM 8104 isolate carried two different class 1 integrons, and the PSE-1 ${\beta}$-lactamase gene was inserted into a 1,200 bp class 1 integron. The presence of DT104 with pse-1 in an integron located in a plasmid and reduced susceptibility to quinolone in swine pose a significant threat of possible horizontal spread between swine and humans.

  • Nakanoshima Festival Tower is a 200 m high-rise complex building which contains a renewed 2700-seat capacity concert hall known as "Festival Hall" and offices including headquarter of a news company. In order to build up an office tower on the hall which requires large open space, a giant truss system is employed. The giant trusses being composed of mega-trusses and belt-trusses support all the building weight above them and transfer the load to the outside of the hall. The building also requires high seismic resistance performance for a news company. Application of mid-story seismic isolation enables the building to satisfy high-level seismic resistance criteria.

  • In a main propulsion system of naval ship, DRME(Double Resilient Mounted Engine) is mostly adopted to ensure vibration isolation and shock resistance against underwater explosion weapon attack. In this paper, an analysis program for vibration and shock evaluation of DRME is presented. DRME is modelled as multi-rigid bodies with nonlinear mounts, and direct time integration method is introduced for shock analysis. The computed results are compared with those of foreign ones. Navy's proposed specifications are well satisfied with this program. This analysis program serves for the development of domestic DRME technology of naval ship.

  • Drug resistance is one of the most significant impediments to successful chemotherapy of cancer. Multidrug-resistance (MDR) is characterized by decreased cellular sensitivity to anticancer agents due to the overexpression of P-glycoprotein. By employing a resistant subline of HCT15 to adriamycin (CL02), we undertook the screening for agents which were effective to multidrug-resistant cancer cells. As a result, a myxobacterial strain JW150 was selected for study since an activity against CL02 cells was discovered in the strain. Cytotoxicity-guided fractionation of the culture broth led to the isolation of cystothiazole A and melithiazole F. The producing organism was identified as Myxococcus stipitatus by taxonomic comparison with type strains of Myxococcus sp. as well as its morphological and physiological characteristics. Cystothiazole A and melithiazole F demonstrated potent cytotoxicity against certain human cancer cells with $IC_{50}$ values ranging from 0.03~ $0.72{\mu}{\textrm{g}}$/ml. Both compounds were interestingly as active against drug-resistant sublines CL02 and CP70 as against the corresponding parental cells.

  • A total of 131 Pasteurella (P.) multocida strains were isolated from the lungs of 1,064 pigs with respiratory clinical signs nationwide during 2009-2010 and 2013-2014. The strains of P. multocida comprised 77.1% serotype A and 22.9% serotype D. Analysis of a recent P. multocida outbreak in Korean pigs showed that the isolation rate of serotype D decreased annually. The incidence of antimicrobial resistance, as measured using minimal inhibitory concentration values, has decreased recently. Overall, further studies to characterize P. multocida isolated from pigs in Korea are needed to prevent P. multocida infection in the Korean swine industry
