  • PET-CT and PET-MRI which integrates CT using ionized radiation and MRI using phenomena of magnetic resonance are determined to have the limitation to apply the semi-quantitative index, standardized uptake value (SUV), with the same level due to the fundamental differences of image capturing principle and reorganization, hence, their correlations were analyzed to provide their clinical information. To 30 study subjects maintaining pre-treatment, $^{18}F-FDG$ (5.18 MBq/㎏) was injected and they were scanned continuously without delaying time using $Biograph^{TM}$ mMR 3T (Siemens, Munich) and Biograph mCT 64 (Siemens, Germany), which is an integral type, under the optimized condition except the structural differences of both scanners. Upon the measurement results of $SUV_{max}$ setting volume region of interest with evenly distributed radioactive pharmaceuticals by captured images, $SUV_{max}$ mean values of PET-CT and PET-MRI were $2.94{\pm}0.55$ and $2.45{\pm}0.52$, respectively, and the value of PET-MRI was measured lower by $-20.85{\pm}7.26%$ than that of PET-CT. Also, there was a statistically significant difference in SUVs between two scanners (P<0.001), hence, SUV of PET-CT and PET-MRI cannot express the clinical meanings in the same level. Therefore, in case of the patients who undergo cross follow-up tests with PET-CT and PET-MRI, diagnostic information should be analyzed considering the conditions of SUV differences in both scanners.

  • Er3+/Yb3+-codoped NaLa(MoO4)2 colloidal nanocrystals were synthesized by pulsed laser ablations in de-ionized water and sodium dodecyl sulfate (NaC12H25SO4, SDS) aqueous solution for up-conversion (UC) luminescence bio-labeling applications. The influences of the SDS molecules on the crystallinities, crystal morphologies, crystallite sizes, and UC luminescence properties of the prepared Er3+/Yb3+-codoped NaLa(MoO4)2 colloidal nanocrystals were investigated in detail. Under a 980-nm excitation, the Er3+/Yb3+-codoped nanocolloidal NaLa(MoO4)2 suspension exhibited a weak red emission near 670 nm and strong green UC emissions at 530 and 550 nm, corresponding to the intra 4f transitions of Er3+ (4F9/2, 2H11/2, 4S3/2) → Er3+ (4I15/2). When the SDS solution was used, a smaller average crystallite size, narrower size distribution, and enhanced UC luminescence were observed. These characteristics were attributed to the amphoteric SDS molecules attached to the positively charged Er3+/Yb3+-codoped NaLa(MoO4)2 colloidal nanocrystals, effectively occupying the oxygen defect on their surfaces. The Er3+/Yb3+-codoped nanocrystalline NaLa(MoO4)2 suspension prepared in the SDS solution exhibited a remarkably strong green emission visible to the naked eyes.

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that involves the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). Matrix metalloproteinases-8 (MMP-8), neutrophil collagenase, is a functional player in the progressive pathology of various inflammatory disorders. In this study, we administered an MMP-8 inhibitor (MMP-8i) in Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) G2019S transgenic mice, to determine the effects of MMP-8i on PD pathology. We observed a significant increase of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1)-positive activated microglia in the striatum of LRRK2 G2019S mice compared to normal control mice, indicating enhanced neuro-inflammatory responses. The increased number of Iba1-positive activated microglia in LRRK2 G2019S PD mice was down-regulated by systemic administration of MMP-8i. Interestingly, this LRRK2 G2019S PD mice showed significantly reduced size of cell body area of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) positive neurons in SN region and MMP-8i significantly recovered cellular atrophy shown in PD model indicating distinct neuro-protective effects of MMP-8i. Furthermore, MMP-8i administration markedly improved behavioral abnormalities of motor balancing coordination in rota-rod test in LRRK2 G2019S mice. These data suggest that MMP-8i attenuates the pathological symptoms of PD through anti-inflammatory processes.

  • In this study, we investigated the dynamics of a droplet impacting rough hydrophobic surfaces through high-speed imaging. Micrometer-sized structures with grooves and pillars were fabricated on smooth Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces by laser ablation. We used Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquid droplets to study the drop impact dynamics. De-ionized water and aqueous glycerin solutions were used for the Newtonian liquid droplet. The solutions of xanthan gum in water were prepared to provide elastic property to the Newtonian droplet. We found that the orientation of the surface structures affected the maximal spreading diameter of the droplet due to the degree of slippage. During the droplet retraction, the dynamic receding contact angles were measured to be around 90° or less. It resulted in the formation of the micro-capillary bridges between the receding droplet and the surface structures. Then, the rupture of the capillary bridge led to the formation of micrometer-sized droplets on top of the surface structures. The size of the microdroplets was found to increase with increasing the impacting velocity and viscosity of the Newtonian liquid droplets. However, the size of the isolated microdroplets decreased with enhancing the elasticity of the droplets, and the size of the non-Newtonian microdroplets was not affected by the impacting velocity.

  • As the application of nano-satellites constellation increases worldwide in the wake of New Space era, there is growing demand for the development of thrusters for precise attitude and orbit control of small satellites. Field Emission Electric Propulsion(FEEP) thruster uses a liquid metal as a propellant and accelerates the ionized liquid metal through a strong electric field at the tip of the metal surface. FEEP thruster technology is suitable for nano-satellites which require various missions for attitude and orbit control, because it provides thrust ranging from 1 µN to 1 mN with high specific impulse up to about 10,000 s and can be miniaturized due to its simple structure. In this paper, the basics of FEEP thrusters are introduced, then the current status of research and development of FEEP thrusters are presented.

  • Objectives : Neuroinflammation is characterized by microglial activation and the expression of major inflammatory mediators. The present study investigated the inhibitory effect of ginsenoside Rg1 ($GRg_1$), a principle active ingredient in Panax ginseng, on pro-inflammatory cytokines and microglial activation induced by systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment in the mouse brain tissue. Methods : Varying doses of $GRg_1$ was orally administered (10, 20, and 30 mg/kg) 1 h before the LPS injection (3 mg/kg, intraperitoneally). The mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the brain tissue was measured using the quantitative real-time PCR method at 4 h after the LPS injection, Microglial activation was evaluated using western blotting and immunohistochemistry against ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1 (Iba1) in the brain tissue. Cyclooxigenase-2 (COX-2) expressions also observed using western blotting and immunohistochemistry at 4 h after the LPS injection, In addition, double-immunofluorescent labeling of tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$) and COX-2 with microglia and neurons was processed in the brain tissue. Results : $GRg_1$ (30 mg/kg) significantly attenuated the upregulation of TNF-${\alpha}$, interleukin (IL)-$1{\beta}$ and IL-6 mRNA in the brain tissue at 4 h after LPS injection. Morphological activation and Iba1 protein expression of microglia induced by systemic LPS injection were reduced by the $GRg_1$ (30 mg/kg) treatment. Upregulation of COX-2 protein expression in the brain tissue was also attenuated by the $GRg_1$ (30 mg/kg) treatment. Conclusion : The results suggest that $GRg_1$ is effective in the early stage of neuroinflammation which causes neurodegenerative diseases.

  • The impact of AGN on star formation is one of the main questions in AGN-galaxy coevolution studies. However, direct evidence of AGN feedback is still rare. One of the main obstacles is that various star formation rate (SFR) indicators are contaminated by AGN contribution. We present IR-based SFR measurements of a sample of 52 local (z<0.3) AGNs, which were selected based on kinematical properties of ionized gas outflows, using SED analysis with JCMT/SCUBA-2 data. First, we will compare IR-based SFR with other SFR indicators to check the reliability of the SFR indicators. Second, we will discuss the contribution of Mid-IR emission from hot dust of AGN torus by comparing SED fitting results with and without including AGN dust component. Finally, we will report the correlation between specific SFR (sSFR) and AGN activity (e.g., outflow strength or Eddington ratio) as evidence of no instantaneous feedback and discuss the implications of these results

  • In this study, microscopic observation was made on the surface of cement paste immersed in an aquatic environment for 100 days at electrochemical treatment to mitigate the leaching of alkali ions. To quantitatively rank the hydration products, unhydrated grains and porosity in the interfacial region, the backscattered electron(BSE) images were obtained by scanninng electron microscopy. As a result, it was found that the porosity on the surface was significantly reduced by the electrochemical treatment, while unhydrated grains were more or less increased presumably limited hydration reaction under electric charge. At electrochemical treatment, Ca2+ ions present in C-S-H gel could be precipitated with OH- to form Ca(OH)2 then to lower C-S-H gel and simultaneously to enhance Ca(OH)2. Substantially, the risk of alkali leaching could be lowered by the limited ionized matrix under electrochemical treatment.

  • HD 81817 is known as a hybrid star. Hybrid stars have both cool stellar wind properties and UV or even X-ray emission features of highly ionized atoms in their spectra. A white dwarf companion has been suggested as the source of UV or X-ray features. HD 81817 has been observed since 2004 as a part of our radial velocity (RV) survey program to search for exoplanets around K giant stars using the Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at the 1.8 m telescope of Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) in Korea. We obtained 84 RV measurements between 2004 and 2018 for HD 81817 and found two periodic RV variations. The obtained amplitudes of RV periods are around 200 m/s, which are significantly lower than that expected from a white dwarf companion. Furthermore, our re-analysis of the IUE spectra used by Reimers (1984) shows that the excess in UV emission can easily be explained by a pseudo-continuum of unresolved emission lines originating in the extended chromosphere of the star. We thus conclude that there are no companions of stellar mass to HD 81817. Meanwhile, we analyzed two periodicities in RV measurements and conclude that the period of 627.9 days is caused by intrinsic stellar activities based on H alpha equivalent width (EW) variations of a similar period. On the other hand, the period of 1047.8 days is likely to be caused by substellar companion which has a minimum mass of 27.6 MJUP, a semi-major axis of 3.3 AU, and an eccentricity of 0.17 assuming the stellar mass of 4.3 M for HD 81817. The inferred mass puts HD 81817 b in the brown dwarf desert.

  • Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is a young supernova remnant (SNR) where we observe the interaction of SNR blast wave with circumstellar medium. From the early optical studies, dense, slowly-moving, N-rich "quasi-stationary flocculi" (QSF) have been known. These are probably dense CNO-processed circumstellar knots that have been engulfed by the SNR blast wave. We have carried out near-infrared, high-resolution (R=45,000) spectroscopic observations of ~40 QSF, and here we present the result on a QSF knot (hereafter 'Knot 24') near the SNR boundary of Cas A. The average [Fe II] 1.644 um spectrum of Knot 24 has a remarkable shape with a narrow (~8 km/s) line superposed on the broad (~200 km/s) line emitted from shocked gas. The spatial morphology and the line parameters indicate that Knot 24 has been partially destroyed by a shock wave and that the narrow line is emitted from the unshocked material heated/ionized by the shock radiation. This is the first detection of the emission from the pristine circumstellar material of the Cas A supernova progenitor. We also detected H Br gamma and other [Fe II] lines corresponding to the narrow [Fe II] 1.644 um line. For the main clump where we can clearly identify the shock emission associated with the unshocked material, we analyze the observed line ratios using a shock model that includes radiative precursor. The analysis indicates that the majority of Fe in the unshocked material is in the gas phase, not depleted onto dust grains as in the general interstellar medium. We discuss the non-depletion of Fe in QSF and its implications on the immediate progenitor of the Cas A supernova.
