  • Intramolecular Diels-Alder cycloadditions of 2-pyrone-3-carboxylates with trans-vinyl silaketal groups tethered via a chiral, non-racemic 1,3-butanediol auxiliary proceeded in unexpected stepwise cycloadditions through ionic intermediates to provide cis-disubstituted bicylolactones. The ratio of two isomers, exo and endo, was 5 to 1, and each isomer was found to be diastereomerically pure (>99% de). Their relative and absolute stereochemistries were determined by $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy and confirmed by X-ray crystallography of minor, endo-adduct 9. The major exo-adduct was successfully transformed to (-)-2-butyl substituted A-ring phophine oxide 16, a key element for the synthesis of 2-butyl vitamin D3.

  • As langasite $A_3BC_3D_2O_{14}$ compounds with piezoelectric properties exhibit no phase transition up to the melting point of 1,400-$1,500^{\circ}C$, many high temperature applications are expected for the SAW filter, temperature sensor, pressure sensor, and so on, based on the digital transformation of wider bandwidth and higher-bit rates. It has a larger electromechanical coupling factor compared to quartz and also nearly the same temperature stability as quartz. The $La_3Ga_5SiO_{14}$ (LGS) crystal with the $Ca_3Ga_2Ge_4O_{14}$-type crystal structure was synthesized and the crystal structure was analyzed by Mill et al. It is also an important feature that the growth of the single crystal is easy. In the case of three-element compounds such as $[R_3]_A[Ga]_B[Ga_3]_C[GaSi]_DO_{14}$ (R=La, Pr and Nd), the piezoelectric constant increases with the ionic radius of R. In this study, crystal structures of four-element compounds such as $[A_3]_A[B]_B[Ga_3]_C[Si_2]_DO_{14}$ (A = Ca or Sr, B = Ta or Nb) are analyzed by a single crystal X-ray diffraction, and the mechanism and properties of the piezoelectricity depending on the species of cation was clarified based on the crystal structure.

  • The (Na,K)ATPase is responsible for generating the ionic gradients and membrane potentials by the exchange of intracellular $Na^+$ for $K^+$. It has been recentl y shown that (Na,K)ATPase is involved in the exocytic pathway of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), although it is not known that bFGF is secreted to the outside of cell through direct interaction with (Na,K) ATPase. To understand the role for (Na,K)ATPase in the secretary pathway of bFGF, we have sought to identify the cytoplasmic domains of the alpha1 isoform of (Na,K)ATPase interacting with bFGF by yeast two-hybrid system. We have also investigated the interaction between the alpha2 isoform of (Na,K)ATPase and bFGF to find out whether the interaction is isoform-specific. We found that none of the cytoplasmic domains of (Na,K)ATPase isoforms interacted with bFGF. The result suggests that the interaction between bFGF and (Na,K)ATPase might be indirect, thus requiring other proteins which are involved in the formation of protein complexes for the interaction, although we cannot exclude the possibility that the interaction requires the element of the whole alpha subunit structure that was not present in the isolated alpha subunit cytoplasmic domains.

  • Rare earth-doped ceria powders with a composition of Ce0.8R0.2O1.9(R=Yb, Y, Gd, Sm, Nd and La) were prepared by heating the oxalate coprecipitate. The green compacts began to shrink at 600$^{\circ}$-700$^{\circ}C$. The relative density after the sintering at 1200$^{\circ}$ and 1400$^{\circ}C$ became higher for the higher green density. The samples were densified above 98% relative density by the sintering ant 1600$^{\circ}C$ for 4 h and the grain sizes (4.7-7.6$\mu\textrm{m}$) showed a tendency to become larger with increasing ionic radius of doped-rare earth element. In the intial stag of sintering at 700$^{\circ}$-800$^{\circ}C$, the dominant mass transport process changed from lattice diffusion to grain boundary diffusion to grain boundary diffusion with heating time. The porosity during the intermediated and final stage of the sintering at 1200$^{\circ}$ and 1400$^{\circ}C$ decreased by the mass transport through lattice diffusion with grain growth.

  • The reverse electrodialysis (RED) is an energy generation system to convert chemical potential of saline water directly into electric energy via the combination of current derived from a redox couple electrolyte and ionic potential obtained when cation ($Na^+$) and anion ($Cl^-$) pass through cation exchange membrane (CEM) and anion exchange membrane (AEM) into fresh water, respectively. Ion exchange membrane, a key element of RED system, should satisfy requirements such as 1) low swelling behavior, 2) a certain level of ion exchange capacity, 3) high ion conductivity, and 4) high perm-selectivity to achieve high power density. In this paper, research trends and prospects of ionomer materials and ion exchange membranes are dealt with.

  • A comprehensive simulation model for the transport process of fully coupled moisture and multi-species in non-saturated concrete structures is proposed. The governing equations of moisture and ion diffusion are formulated based on Fick's law and the Nernst-Planck equation, respectively. The governing equations are modified by explicitly including the coupling terms corresponding to the coupled mechanisms. The ionic interaction-induced electrostatic potential is described by electroneutrality condition. The model takes into account the two-way coupled effect of moisture diffusion and ion transport in concrete. The coupling parameters are evaluated based on the available experimental data and incorporated in the governing equations. Differing from previous researches, the material parameters related to moisture diffusion and ion transport in concrete are considered not to be constant numbers and characterized by the material models that account for the concrete mix design parameters and age of concrete. Then, the material models are included in the numerical analysis and the governing equations are solved by using finite element method. The numerical results obtained from the present model agree very well with available test data. Thus, the model can predict satisfactorily the ingress of deicing salts into non-saturated concrete.

  • The properties of Electroactive Polymer (EAP) materials are attracting the attention of engineers and scientists from many different disciplines. From the point-of-view of robotics, Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMC) belong to the most developed group of the EAP class. To allow effective design of IPMC-actuated mechanisms with large induced strains, it is necessary to have adequate analytical tools for predicting the behavior of IPMC actuators as well as simulating their response as part of prototyping methodologies. This paper presents a novel IPMC motor construction. To simulate the bending behavior that is the dominant phenomenon of motor movement process, a nonlinear model is used. To accomplish the motor design, the IPMC model was identified via a series of experiments. In the proposed model, the curvature output and current transient fields accurately track the measured responses, which is verified by measurements. In this research, a three-dimensional Finite Element Method (FEM) model of the IPMC motor, composed of IPMC actuators, simultaneously determines the mechanical and electrical characteristics of the device and achieves reliable analysis results. The principle of the proposed drive and the output signals are illustrated in this paper. The proposed modelling approach can be used to design a variety of controllers and motors for effective micro-robotic applications, where soft and complex motion are required.

  • In this work, the electrokinetic interactions between the undulated structure of an ion-selective membrane and electroconvective instability has been studied using numerical analysis. Using finite element method, electric field-ionic species transport-flow field were analyzed by fully-coupled manner. Through the numerical study, the Dukhin's mode as the mechanism of undulated surface for the electroconvective instability were proven. The Dukhin's mode which competes with Rubinstein's mode has roles of (i) decreasing transition voltage to overlimiting regime and (ii) non-linearly increasing of overlimiting current. Also, (iii) the mixing efficiency is enhanced by removal mechanism of high-frequency Fourier mode of the electroconvective instability. Conclusively, the undulated ion-selective surface would provide energy-efficient mechanism for ion-selective transport systems such as electrodialysis, electrochemical battery, etc.

  • Zinc is an essential micronutrient with crucial roles in multiple facets of biological processes. Dysregulated zinc homeostasis impairs overall immune function and resultantly increases susceptibility to infection. Clinically, zinc supplementation is practiced for treatment of several infectious diseases, such as diarrhea and malaria. Recent focus on zinc as a beneficial element for immune system support has resulted in investigation of the immunomodulatory roles of zinc in a variety of immune cells. Besides its classical role as a cofactor that regulates the structural function of thousands of proteins, accumulating evidence suggests that zinc also acts, in a manner similar to calcium, as an ionic regulator of immune responses via participation as an intracellular messenger in signaling pathways. In this review, we focus on the role of zinc as a signaling molecule in major pathways such as those downstream of Toll-like receptors-, T cell receptor-, and cytokine-mediated signal transduction that regulate the activity and function of monocytes/macrophages and T cells, principal players in the innate and adaptive immune systems.

  • This research investigated the characteristics of fine particles during cold front passage in Busan, on March 19, 2020. The cold front speed was 17.4 m/s (about 63k km/hr), moving from the northwest to the southeast, and with a width of about 64 km. The backward trajectory analysis showed that a southern sea air parcel flowed into Busan before the cold front passage, carrying continental materials from China transported into Busan after cold front passage. The PM10 concentration in Busan showed a rapid increase after passing through the cold front, with PM2.5 showing a high concentration during cold front passage. The PM2.5/PM10 ratio was 0.10 - 0.30. When the cold front passed, SO42-, NO3-, Ca2+, NH4+, Na+, and K+ in PM2.5 showed a rapid increase, with SO42- showing the most significant increase. These results indicated that understanding the characteristics of fine particles during cold front passage in Busan could provide insight into establishing a strategy to control urban air quality.
