We have studied the liquid crystal (LC) alignment, the pretilt angle generation, and the annealing behavior for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on the homogeneous polyimide (PI) surfaces by using the rubbing method and the ion beam (IB) method. An excellent LC alignment of the NLC on the PI surface with rubbing and IB irradiation were observed. The pretilt angle of NLC on the homogeneous PI surface for the rubbing method is decreased from $4.5^{\circ}$ to $3.5^{\circ}$ as rubbing time is increased, that of the for the IB irradiation method is decreased from $0.5^{\circ}$ to $0.1^{\circ}$ as the time of IB irradiation is increased. After the annealing, the pretilt angles of the rubbed PI surfaces increased up to $4^{\circ}$, these of the IB irradiated PI surfaces little increased. It is considered the side chain of the rubbed PI show the its abilities of the original capacities, while the side chain of the IB irradiated PI cannot show the its abilities of the original capacities due to the IB has already destroyed the side chain of the PI.

SiC-based ceramics are considered as candidate materials for the advanced nuclear energy systems such as the generation IV reactors and the fusion reactors due to their excellent high-temperature strength and irradiation resistance. The advanced nuclear energy systems and their main components adopting ceramic composites were briefly reviewed. A novel fabrication method of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites by introducing SiC whiskers was also described. In addition, the charged-particle irradiation ($Si^{2+}$ and $H^{+}$ ion) into CVD SiC was carried out to simulate the severe environments of the advanced nuclear reactors. SiC whiskers grown in the fiber preform increased the matrix infiltration rate by more than $60\%$ compared to the conventional CVI process. The highly crystalline and pure SiC showed little degradation in hardness and elastic modulus up to a damage level of 10 dpa at $1000^{\circ}C$.

We investigate the effect of thermal annealing on $MgB_2$ thin films with thicknesses of 400 and 800 nm, irradiated by 350 keV C-ions with a dose of $1{\times}10^{15}atoms/cm^2$. Irradiation by low-energy C-ions produces atomic lattice displacement in $MgB_2$ thin films, improving magnetic field performance of critical current density ($J_c$) while reducing the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$). Interestingly, the lattice displacement and the $T_c$ are gradually restored to the original values with increasing thermal annealing temperature. In addition, the magnetic field dependence of $J_c$ also returns to that of the pristine state together with the restoration of $T_c$. Because $J_c$(H) is sensitive to the type and density of the disorder, i.e. vortex pinning, the recovery of $J_c$(H) in irradiated $MgB_2$ thin films by thermal annealing indicates that low-energy C-ion irradiation on $MgB_2$ thin films primarily causes lattice displacement. These results provide new insights into the application of low-energy irradiation in strategically engineering critical properties of superconductors.

To date, rubbing has been widely used to align LC molecules uniformly. Although rubbing can be simple, it has fundamental problems such as the generation of defects by dust and static electricity, and difficulty in achieving a uniform LC alignment on a large substrate. Therefore, non contact alignment has been investigated. Ion beam induced alignment method, which provides controllability, nonstop process, and high resolution display. In this study, we investigated liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) that non contact alignment technique on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide under various ion beam angles. In this experiment, Polyimide layer was coated on glass by spin-coating and Voltage-transmittance(VT) and response time characteristics of the TN cell were measured by a LCD evaluation system. The good characteristics of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure polyimide surface was observed. The tilt angle of NLC on the PI surface with ion beam exposure can be measured under $1^{\circ}$ for all of irradiation angles. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties, and residual DC property of the ion beam aligned TN cell on polyimide surface.

In this work, a new hardening model is proposed for the depth-dependent hardness of ion-irradiated polycrystals with obvious grain size effect. Dominant hardening mechanisms are addressed in the model, including the contribution of dislocations, irradiation-induced defects and grain boundaries. Two versions of the hardening model are compared, including the linear and square superposition models. A succinct parameter calibration method is modified to parametrize the models based on experimentally obtained hardness vs. indentation depth curves. It is noticed that both models can well characterize the experimental data of unirradiated polycrystals; whereas, the square superposition model performs better for ion-irradiated materials, therefore, the square superposition model is recommended. In addition, the new model separates the grain size effect from the dislocation hardening contribution, which makes the physical meaning of fitted parameters more rational when compared with existing hardness analysis models.
The investigations of the coated-particles of nuclear fuel samples are carried out in three stages: front-end, irradiation in the reactor core, and post-irradiation examination. The front-end stage is the initial analysis of the failures rates of produced samples before they are placed in the reactor core. The purpose of the verification is to prepare the particles for an experiment that will determine the degree of damage to the coated particles at each stage. Before starting experiments with the samples, they must be properly prepared. Polishing the samples in order to uncover the inner layers is an important, initial experimental step. The authors of this paper used a novel way to prepare samples for testing - by applying an ion polisher. Mechanical polishing used frequently for sample preparations generates additional mechanical damages in the studied fuel particle, thus directly affecting the experimental results. The polishing methods were compared for three different coated particles using diagnostic methods such as Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that the ion polishing method is better because the level of interference with the structures of the individual layers of the tested samples is much lower than with the mechanical method. The same technique is used for the fuel particles undergone ion implantation simulating radiation damage that can occur in the reactor core.
The bi-functional ion exchangers, SAPP-g-(AN/St) were synthesized with mixed vinyl monomers(acrylonitrile and styrene) onto PP fabric by the pre-irradiation grafting with E-beam and its subsequent amidoximination and sulfonation. The degree of grafting of PP-g-(AN/St) was increased with decreasing acrylonitrile composition in the mixed monomers. The water uptake of copolymers increased with decreasing in the amidoxime ratio in the copolymers and increased by sulfonation, but decreased by amidoximation. The $UO_2^{2+}$ adsorption capacity of SPP-g-St, APP-g-AN, and SAPP-g-(AN/St) were 12.4, 34.0, and 38.0 mg/g, respectively and the optimum adsorption time is about 50 hrs. As a result of uranium adsorption, the synthesized ion exchanger, which we obtained have also good affinity toward the adsorption or chelating with $UO_2^{2+}$ ions.

In this study, we investigated the genetic variation in the general of monocot model plant (rice) in response to various ionizing irradiations including gamma-ray, ion beam and cosmic-ray. The non-irradiated and three irradiated (200 Gy of gamma-ray and 40 Gy of ion beam and cosmic-ray) plants were analyzed by AFLP technique using capillary electrophoresis with ABI3130xl genetic analyzer. The 29 primer combinations tested produced polymorphism results showing a total of 2,238 bands with fragments sizes ranged from 30 bp to 600 bp. The number of polymorphism generated by each primer combinations was varied significantly, ranging from 2 (M-CAC/E-ACG) to 158 (M-CAT/E-AGG) with an average of 77 bands. Polymorphic peaks were detected as 1,269 with an average of 44 per primer combinations. By UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method using Arithmetic clustering) analysis method, the clusters were divided into non-irradiated sample and three irradiated samples at a similarity coefficient of 0.41 and three irradiation samples was subdivided into cosmic-ray and two irradiation samples (200 Gy of gamma-ray and 40 Gy of ion beam) at similarity coefficient of 0.48. Similarity coefficient values ranged from 0.41 to 0.55.
Chemical and thermal characteristics of cation exchange resins were examined after irradiation of gamma rays. The degradation of cation exchange resins was mainly observed at doses of up to 500 kGy, whereas the balance between degradation and cross-linking reactions was sustained at 700 kGy. While the carbon content decreased significantly up to a maximum dose of 500 kGy, it showed an increase at higher doses. Conversely, the oxygen content exhibited a decrease in contrast to the carbon content. The continuous reduction in sulfur content was attributed to the decomposition of sulfonic groups. Gamma-ray irradiation caused a decrease in the initiation temperature of sulfonic groups and PS-DVB, but unlike the chemical properties of cation exchange resins due to gamma-ray irradiation, the thermal properties of resins remained unaffected.
