The purpose of this paper is to compare the different characteristics of Korean and Japanese Overseas Direct Investment(ODI) in Asia. An empirical test consists of two parts, the determinants of ODI and the micro characteristics of subsidiaries in Asia between Korea and Japan. Multiple regression and logistic regression model are used in empirical tests as methodology. The coefficient of GDP is significant and positive sign to sole venture in both countries. The coefficient of CPA in Korea is significant and positive sign to joint venture but insignificant in Japan. The coefficient of WAGE in Korea is significant and positive sign to joint venture but is significant and negative sign to joint venture in Japan. The coefficient of LBIT is significant and positive sign to joint venture in Japan. The coefficient of HOME is significant and positive sign to sole venture in both countries.
The developing countries have a lot of dormant resources, attempting the take-off of economic growth. The theory of 'vent for surplus' and Lewis model provide a good cornerstones to analyze the effect of export, FDI and domestic production on employment. This paper attempts to do empirical test to figure out what factor is significant as the determinant of Chinese employment. For this test, the estimation equations are derived from the Cobb-Douglas production function. The results are that the domestic production affects the most positive employment, compared to FDI and export. Unlikely general expectation, export doesn't have an substantial effect on employment in China. It is also found that the absorption of technology through export is lower than that of FDI in terms of the effect of technology on employment. So it is suggested that the employment policy should be shifted toward the increase of domestic production by using FDI rather than by promoting export industry. to reduce the internal imbalance.
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to investigate economic variables which have impact on the prices and returns of preferred stocks and to provide investors, underwriters, and policy makers with information regarding correlations and causal relations between them. Design/methodology/approach - This study collected 98 monthly data from Korea Exchange and Bank of Korea. The Granger causal relation analysis, unit-root test and the multiple regression analysis were hired in order to analyze the data. Findings - First, our study derives the economic variables affecting the prices and returns of preferred stocks and their implications, while previous studies focused mainly on the differential characteristics and related economic factors between common and preferred stocks. Empirical results show that the significant variables influencing the prices and returns of preffered stocks are consumer sentiment index, consumer price index, industrial production index, KOSPI volatility index, and exchange rate between Korean won and US dollar. Second, consumer sentiment index, consumer price index, and industrial production index have significant casual relations with the returns of preferred stocks, providing market participants with important information regarding investment in preferred stocks. Research implications or Originality - This study is different from previous studies in that preferred stocks themselves are investigated rather than the gap between common stocks and preferred stocks. In addition, we derive the major macro variables affecting the prices and returns of preferred stocks and find some useful causal relations between the macro variables and returns of preferred stocks. These findings give important implications to market participants, including stock investors, underwriters, and policy makers.
This paper empirically analyzes the effect of renewable electricity generation on the System Marginal Price (SMP) in Korea. Using an ARX-GARCHX model with hourly data from 2016 to 2020, we evaluate SMP determinants and merit order effects. As a result, we find that solar and wind power, as well as gas price and total load, play a critical role in the SMP. In particular, solar power reduces the SMP level but raises volatility during peak and off-peak periods. This result implies that SMP may fall as renewable electricity generation increases, leading to a decrease in the profitability of existing power plants and investment in renewables. On the other hand, even if the subsidy of renewable energy increases the burden on the SMP, it can be offset by the merit order effect, which lowers the SMP.
Globalization and the flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the post-pandemic context continue to play a critical role in shaping the workforce of emerging countries. In Vietnam, evidence obtained during the pandemic revealed that the well-being of employees, especially migrant workers, was extremely poor due to both work and non-work factors. This paper examines the most significant factors that impact the well-being of workers employed by various FDI companies in two Vietnamese industrial parks. The survey evidence (n=200) shows that worker well-being is influenced by seven key factors categorized in three dimensions, namely material stressors, social stressors, and human stressors. A further qualitative analysis of 60 participants provides an understanding of the ways in which each factor affects workers' well-being and how elements of well-being in the Vietnamese context are different compared with other countries. Low salaries, lack of social support, work-life imbalance due to job demands, and the interplay between these three determinants significantly affect the overall well-being of workers. In the current business climate, it is important to have well-targeted policies that encourage high-tech investments as well as persuade domestic firms to address low salaries and economic migration. To manage valuable human resources and keep competitive advantages, foreign firms need to authentically implement corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives focusing on workers' benefits, especially providing workforce housing. This will bring about win-win outcomes of improved employee well-being and business sustainability.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the determinants of insurance product cross selling performance. For the study, 11 insurance managers and 2 sales managers belonging to A insurance agency were selected and in-depth interviews were conducted. The analysis of the research data was done by the open coding method suggested by Strauss & Corbin(2001). As a result, 84 concepts, 28 subcategories and 10 categories were derived. The ten categories that were determinants of insurance product cross-selling performance were personal characteristics, consultation method, cross-selling ratio, sales culture, education, customer change, customer DB provision, satisfaction, business support system, and customer service. In order to verify the qualitative results, quantitative analysis was emplyed to the actual performance data of insurance planners belonging to A insurance agency during April 2016~March 2019. As a result of the analysis, the age, position, and the number of months worked in the insurance company had a statistically significant effect on the number of life insurance contracts in total insurance contracts and life insurance contracts in total insurance contracts. In addition, the age, position, and the number of months worked in the insurance company had a statistically significant negative impact on the number of non-life insurance contracts in the total number of insurance contracts and the total amount of insurance contracts in total insurance contracts. The result of this study can be an important basic data for the development of educational programs and job support systems for the training of insurance planners. Insurance companies should refer to ten categories derived from qualitative research in order to increase the performance of insurance planners and to promote long-term service. Especially, it is necessary to develop specialized education programs and job support systems so that cross sales that increase the proportion of life insurance sales increase.

This study analyzes various aspects of the successful overseas expansion of SMEs that export consumer goods with their own brands. Through in-depth interviews with CEOs and marketing practitioners of fifteen SMEs that export consumer goods of their own brands, researchers examined the determinants of the decisions to export own-brand products, forms of expansion into foreign markets, firms' distribution networks, firms' technological and marketing capabilities, export barriers, and export support services offered by the government. The results indicate that these companies obtained competitiveness in the design and quality of their products through steady R&D investment, with a focus on niche markets. This study also shows that they established foreign branches, participated in overseas trade fairs, and tapped into foreign markets with Korean home shopping channels and department stores to build distribution channels and to find new buyers. However, the findings of this study reveal that many of those companies export both OEM/OEM products as well as their own-brand products due to the low level of brand awareness in foreign markets. Thus, efforts to improve their brand awareness in the global market are much needed. In addition, this paper demonstrates that the programs and services provided by state-run organizations need improvement in credibility and expertise. This research suggests recommendations for successful export programs, and provides meaningful insights for consumer-goods SMEs establishing foreign market entry strategies with their own brands.
Recently, Global network expansion strategy of GTOs(Global Terminal Operator) coupled with each country's port policy, plays huge role for the evolution of modern container port. The Chinese ports can be regarded as the major markets to the GTOs. However, there are scant of researches for finding the key success factors of GTOs' strategies when they consider to invest in overseas. In this respect, the aims of this study were to draw out the evaluation variables for successful investment strategies of GTOs, and to calculate the selected target ports. The 14 variables are selected including the variable named 'development potentiality of a port' through literature reviews. Using the Factor Analysis (FA) based on selected variables, four principal factors were extracted such as 'ability for port operating and cargo generating', 'the trade route and volume', 'the calling potentiality for large vessels' and 'the possibility of utilization of existing infrastructure'. In addition, the weights of factors and variables are evaluated through Fuzzy AHP method. As a result, 'ability for port operating and cargo generating' is chosen as the most important factor among principal factors as scored 0.343, and 'the development potentiality of a port' (0.107) is represented as the most important variable among 14 detailed variables. In overall, from the Global Terminal Operator's point of view, Shanghai is ranked as most suitable port for operating new terminal among the top 5 Chinese ports.
Although the investment scale and the qualitative performance of national research and development project in Korea have been increased, the practical use of the performance is still insignificant. Thus it becomes more important to understand and analyze factors that affect commercialization of national R&D project. Most of prior literatures have done with qualitative research rather than data-based analysis; however, mostly focusing on influential factors in between R&D inputs and outputs and it remains as limitation. The important key to avoid the limitation in this study is using data-based analysis of factors (such as research performance, types of research institution, scale of the government fund, project structure, competency in the researcher, and technical field) that affect commercialization with the case of the Competitiveness Enhancement in Material and Component Industries. As a result, patents performance, scale of the government fund, and technical field turned out to be influential factors of commercialization. On the other hand, research performance, types of research institution, project structure, and competency in the researcher did not show statistically significant results. To increase commercialization in project scheme, process, and assessment of national R&D project, including the Competitiveness Enhancement in Material and Component Industries project, it is required to design scientific research with better understanding of causal relationship.
The capital structure of the shipping business, which is characterized by its capital intensity and extreme market volatility, is closely related to long-term stability. Research in this area has been conducted mostly in the form of deriving the determinants of capital structure from company-wise financial ratios. This research, on the other hand, has a different approach to the topic. It identifies the relationship between actual cash profit and loss and other variables - i.e. actual vessel prices, interest rates and leverage ratio - by employing historical simulation. The result demonstrates that the P anamax cash profit shows 0 (break-even point) when the debt weight reaches 64.38% (debt ratio 180.74%) and the Cape, 73.04% (debt ratio 270.92%). Additionally, the ships of different types show a divided pattern for the pre- and post-'Super Boom'. It indicates that the business area and the market cycle should be considered when a leverage strategy is established. This research benefits shipping companies set a rational leverage strategy as well as delivers a reasonable guideline to government authorities for the development of a sound policy on shipping finance.
