A Comparative Analysis on the Effect of GVC Participation on the Export Competitiveness of Manufacturing and Service Industry (GVC 참여가 제조업과 서비스업 수출경쟁력에 미치는 영향 비교분석)

  • This study compares and analyzes the effects of GVC participation on export competitiveness in manufacturing and service industry in 36 OECD countries and 28 non-OECD countries. According to the statistical analysis result, the GVC participation had a negative impact on export competitiveness in manufacturing industry, while it had a positive impact in the service industry. In the case of the manufacturing industry, participation toward the backward GVC had a positive impact on export competitiveness before the financial crisis, besides, participation toward the forward GVC had a positive impact on export competitiveness. In the case of the service industry, export competitiveness through forward GVC participation has increased since the financial crisis has occurred, and backward GVC participation was estimated to have a negative impact on export competitiveness. The results of this study implies that, to secure export competitiveness, a converged approach of the manufacturing and service industries to upgrade the global value chain is needed.

  • Amidst dynamic business environment, creating competitive advantage, source of competitiveness, is a critical issue for international port operations. To overcome limitations of prior studies adopted cross-sectional approach, this study reviews a way to continually sustain and create competitive advantage, based on the case of Busan port in South Korea. Development plans, operations and management practices from2005 to 2014 were investigated and reviewed. Results revealed that enhancement of infrastructure, new engine to sustainable growth, green and safety, and partnership enhancement were a source of creating competitive advantage. The results help theoretical advances on competitiveness and its durability, and provide useful insights for creating competitive advantages and future improvement in international port operations.

An Analysis of the International Competitiveness in the Non-Timber Forest Products in Korea (국내 단기소득임산물의 국제경쟁력 분석)

  • In order to compare and analyze the international competitiveness of Non-Timber Forest Products, the analyses of Revealed Comparative Advantage, Market Comparative Advantage, and Constant Market Share were performed in this study. From the result of data analysis from 2002 to 2006, most of items lost the international competitiveness. In the case of chestnut, however, the RCA and MCA indices recently has decreased, but still shows the competitiveness. As a Non-Timber Forest Products show a weak international competitiveness, Import is expected to increased according to the pending FTA and DDA negotiations of Korea/China. Therefore, In order to elevate the international competitiveness, reinforcement of policy support to durable technical development is required to lower the production cost and to heighten the added value.

  • The competitiveness of a country or a city plays an important role as a determining factor in this age of globalization In view of tourism studies, the potential for a region to develop depends primarily on its ability to use and maintain economic advantages in its provision of tourist products and services. In spite of the importance of competitiveness in tourism studies, few researches have been done on competitiveness in Korea The purpose of this study is, therefore, to conduct a comparative analysis of competitiveness between coastal metropolitan cities in Korea-Busan, Ulsan and Incheon- developing tourism index and finding out urban competitiveness. The findings of this study will contribute to enhancing tourism promotion and mutual network with other cities and attracting domestic and international tourists.

  • This study was conducted to propose the way to develop and strengthen competitiveness of the Korean paper industry by analysing current competitiveness and the factors which determine and influence it. Delphi method was employed to identify determining factors of international competitiveness of Korean paper industry and evaluate the level of competitiveness. The competitiveness both in the domestic and foreign markets was evaluated by analysing each product market faced by the Korean paper industry in light of each of the determining factors. Based on the Delphi survey results, in order of importance, product quality, manufacturing cost, transportation and storage, timely delivery, supply of raw materials, and marketing were identified as the factors determining international competitiveness. Among them, it was revealed that Korean paper industry has a certain level of competitiveness in the factors such as product quality and timely delivery service while supply of raw materials and manufacturing costs were found to be inferior to overseas manufacturers in both domestic and foreign markets.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify and evaluate the competitiveness of container ports in ASEAN(Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and Korea, which plays a leading role in basing the hub of international logistics strategies at the onset of the 21st century. Its ultimate purpose is to consider the relevant policy-making by comparing the competitiveness of ASEAN and Korea's container ports. This paper adopted the HFP method, which is an empirical analysis that evaluated the port competitiveness by quantifying it a, a qualitative attribute in the aforementioned area, where both ASEAN and Korea vie with each other for increasing container throughput. The results of this study showed that Singapore ranked the first in the subject of study in view of the competitiveness, followed by Busan(2) and Manila(2) as a leading group of the relevant ports in international logistics strategies. This analytic evaluation contributes to the empirical approach applied to policy-making by the HFP method, which is the newest research technique in social science through the comparative study of port competitiveness between ASEAN and Korea.

The Determinants of International Competitiveness for the Korean Apparel Industry (한국 의류산업의 국제경쟁력 향상을 위한 결정요인)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the determinants and elements to enhance Korean international competitiveness, employing Porter's(1998) Diamond Model. Half of the 500 leading apparel exporters that were members of the Korea Apparel Industry Association in 2003 were selected as the target of this research. From May to June of 2003, survey questionnaires were sent to executives of these 250 companies in person or by telephone, e-mail, or fax. Seventy questionnaires were used for the final data anlysis. The items used were Reliability, Categorical Regression, and Frequency, using SPSS 11.5. The results were as follows: First, as a result of analyzing the influence of international competitiveness in Korean apparel industry, the firm's strategy, structure, and rivalry was the most influential factor. Others were related and supporting industries, government, chance, demand conditions, and factor conditions. Also, the elements that affect Korean international competitiveness were listed as the level of price competition in foreign markets, the level of labor cost, export marketing capacity, and exchange fluctuation. The most important element to improve the international competitiveness of the Korean apparel industry was a demand growth rate of the overseas markets(Demand Conditions), followed by the level of the labor costs(Factor Conditions), the capability of internationalization(Firm Strategy, Structure, and Rivalry), the change of currency(Chance), the quality and management of products(Demand Conditions), the capability of planning products(Firm Strategy, Structure, and Rivalry), free trade from 2005(Chance), and global sourcing strategy(Firm Strategy, Structure, and Rivalry). Korea's main rival country in apparel related and supporting industry factors is China. However, Korea has a higher level of technology development, quality, and price level than China.

Promotion of Competitiveness in Korean Parcel Express Service Industry (우리나라 택배산업의 경쟁력 제고요인)

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest competitiveness promotion factors of korean Parcel Express Service Industry. This study considered in terms of three competitiveness promotion factors which are a firm's subjective factors, a industrial environment factors, and a governmental policy factors. According to analysis results of the factors, a firm's subjective factors(4.07 score) are scored the most ones of competitiveness promotion factors of korean Parcel Express Service Industry, to be compared with a industrial environment factors(3.89 score), with a governmental policy factors(3.76 score). Therefore, first of all, korean Parcel Express Service firms have to promote competitiveness through as follows : (1) speedy meeting to customer's needs, (2) to promote customer service, to reduce delivery lead time, (3) to procure reliability of Parcel Express Service with customers mutually, (4) strategy of global Parcel Express Service.

  • Competitiveness to some countries or cities plays a important role as a determined factor in me recent age of international globalization. In view of tourism studies, the potential to develop some regions depends on its own abilities to use and maintain the economic advantages of cities in providing tourism products and services. In spite of this importance of competitiveness, a few research has been done in Korea. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the comparative competitiveness between coastal metropolitan cities in Korea- Busan, Ulsan, and Incheon, to develop the tourism index and find out urban differences. As a result, the findings of this study will contribute to implementing the promotion of tourism and the network between other cities and attracting the domestic and international tourists.
