  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the stress distribution and the displacement in the temporomandibular joints following the teeth loss patterns. The three dimensional finite element method was used for a mathematical model. The finite element model was composed of 1,632 elements and 2,411 nodes in the mandible with articular disc and mandibular fossa of the temporal bone. The masseter, the temporal and the internal pterygoid muscle forces were applied at each insertion site, bisecting point of gonion and antegonion, tip of the coronoid process, and gonion at the ration of 2:2:1 respectively. The directions of muscles force were obtained from frontal and lateral cephalometric tracings using bony landmarks of the skull. The results were as follows : 1. In control model, the minimum principal stresses were concentrated on the region of anterosuperior part of the condyle head and articular disc, and maximum principal stresses on the anterior part of the condyle head and posterolateral part of the articular disc. 2. In case of unilateral teeth loss, the greater principal stress appeared at the teeth loss side and the principal stresses increased at the teeth loss side as the number of the posterior teeth loss went up. 3. In case of bilateral teeth loss, the principal stresses were greater than those of the control model and as the number of the posterior teeth loss increased, the grater principal stresses on the temporomandibular joints appeared at the both side. 4. When the posterior teeth existed bilateral, the principal stress patterns were similar to those of the control model. 5. The displacement ws directed mainly upward and backward in the upper part of the temporomandibular joints and upward and forward in the largest part of the condyle head. The displacement increased as the number of the posterior teeth loss went up.

  • This paper presents the efficiency analysis of a critical current mode interleaved PFC rectifier, in which each of three different semiconductor switches is employed as the active switch. The Si FET, SiC FET, and GaN FET are consecutively used with the prototype PFC rectifier, and the efficiency of the PFC rectifier with each different semiconductor switch is analyzed. An equivalent circuit model of the PFC rectifier, which incorporates all the internal losses of the PFC rectifier, is developed. The rms values of the current waveforms main circuit components are calculated. By adapting the rms current waveforms to the equivalent model, all the losses are broken down and individually analyzed to assess the conduction loss, switching loss, and magnetic loss in the PFC rectifier. This study revealed that the GaN FET offers the highest overall efficiency with the least loss among the three switching devices. The GaN FET yields 96% efficiency at 90 V input and 97.6% efficiency at 240 V, under full load condition. This paper also confirmed that the efficiency of the three switching devices largely depends on the turn-on resistance and parasitic capacitance of the respective switching devices.

  • Objectives: In this study we made an effort to investigate the protective effect of SSMT on the N-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) -induced cytotoxicity of SH-SY5Y cells. Methods: The cell viability was assessed by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MMT) assay. The fluorescence intensity was measured by using a dye and then with propidium iodide (PI) DNA flow cytometry analysis of the effects on the cell cycle of the SH-SY5Y cells and were used to measure the fluorescence of intracellular reactive oxygen species generation by MPTP. Results: Pretreatment of SSMT significantly suppressed MPTP-induced cytotoxicity, which was revealed as apoptosis characterized by the reduction of cell viability, the increase of ROS production, and the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in SH-SY5Y cells. Conclusions: These findings suggest that SSMT exerts neuroprotective effects on human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells by MPTP-induced dopaminergic neurodegeneration.

  • Background: Little IS known about predictors of lifestyle modification in overweight or obese patients with acute myocardial infarctions. Methods: Between October 2005 and May 2007, 311 overweight or obese patients with an AMI visited Kyungpook National University Hospital. Among them, 216 patients ($63{\pm}11$ years old, 144 males) with ${\geq}1$ year of follow-up were included. Results: Body weight of all patients showed a significant decrease and 20% showed a >3% weight reduction at 1 year of follow-up. Ninety-six (44%) patients were smoking at baseline, and 52% of them had quit by 1 year of follow-up. Only six smokers were successful with both a >3% weight reduction and smoking cessation. In multivariate analysis, age (OR 1.084, 95% CI 1.028-1.144, p=0.003) and smoking cessation (OR 0.167, 95% CI 0.048-0.575, p=0.005) were independent predictors of weight reduction. Abdominal circumference was a negative predictor of smoking cessation (OR 0.903, 95% CI 0.820-0.994, p=0.037). Conclusions: Mean body weight of all patients showed a significant decrease at follow-up. Smoking cessation and age were independent predictors of weight reduction, and abdominal circumference was a negative predictor of smoking cessation.

  • Firing test of solid rocket motor with pintle-technology carried out and the measured pressure-time curve was compared with the values predicted by the internal ballistic and performance analysis. Without baffle, the measured combustion chamber pressure was similar with the predicted pressure at the beginning of combustion, but gradual increase in pressure, which was unexpected with the end-burning grain of which burning area is constant, was observed. A baffle was inserted to make uniform flow over the pintle. Unlike the thruster without baffle, the measured combustion chamber pressure was 1.4 times higher than the predicted value. Through the CFD simulation, 10% of total pressure loss of the flow was observed from combustion chamber to nozzle throat when the baffle was inserted. The measured pressure with baffle was predicted well by considering the total pressure loss in the internal ballistic modelling and performance analysis.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and extent of clinical attachment loss of periodontal tissue and to find out variables related to clinical attachment loss (CAL) in Korean adults older than 40 years of age. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Data were collected from 2,519 subjects who were part of a cohort study conducted in Ansan city by Korea University Medical School for Korean Genome project. Age, sex, smoking, drinking, fast glucose, blood pressure, obesity and total cholesterol levels were examined. The oral examination included probing pocket depth, gingival recession and CAL of Ramford's teeth. The severity of periodontitis was classified based on the mean value of CAL. The relationship between each risk factor and the severity of CAL was independently estimated using the chi-square test, the test or one-way ANOVA. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the significance of each factor in the periodontal disease. RESULTS. The prevalences of clinical attachment between 1 and 3 mm, between 3 and < 5 mm, and ${\geq}$ 5 mm were 80.27%, 16.75% and < 1%, respectively. Although the univariate analysis showed age, gender, smoking, fasting glucose, blood pressure and total cholesterol levels were significantly related to the severity of CAL, multiple regression analysis indicated that age (P < .0001), gender (P < .0001) and smoking (P < .05) were only significantly related. CONCLUSION. Older age, male gender and smoking were significant risk factor for the increase of CAL, and these may be useful indicators of periodontitis high-risk groups.

  • The IRR (internal rate of return) is often used by investors for the evaluation of engineering projects. Unfortunately, it is widely known that it has serial flaws. Also, External rate of returns (ERRs) such as ARR (Average Rate of Return) or MIRR (MIRR, Modified Internal Rate of Return) do not differentiate between the real investment and the expenditure. The PRR (Productive rate of return) is faithful to the conception of the return on investment. The PRR uses the effective investment instead of the initial investment. In this paper, we examined two cases of the engineering project. the one is a traditional engineering project with financing activity, another is the project with R&D. Although the IRR has only one value, it overestimates or underestimate profitabilities of Engineering Projects. The ARR and the MARR assume that a returned cash reinvest other projects or assets instead of the project currently executing. Thus they are only one value of a project's profitability, unlike the IRR. But the ARR does not classify into the effective investment and non-investment expenditure. It only accepts an initial expenditure as for an investment. The MIRR also fails to classify into the investment and the expenditure. It has an error of making a loss down as the investment. The IRR works as efficiently as a NPW (Net Present Worth). It clearly expresses a rate of return in respect of an investment in an engineering project with a loan. And it shows its ability in an engineering project with a R&D investment.

  • Industrial reducer is in general use to Deck Crane. High-precision and high-efficient reducer is minimized the power-loss and energy-loss of a machine. So it contribute the price reduction and life extension. Reducer is usually using the Planetary gear reducer. Planetary gear reducer is composed the sun gear, planet gear, internal gear and casing. Industrial reducer's wear and breakage have a short-life. To solve this problem, it is using the profile-shifted-gear or tooth modification. This study was carried out the effect of addendum modification coefficient on tooth fillet bending strength to planetary reducer. Tooth fillet bending stress is calculate. And all parameter were expressed the function of addendum modification coefficient. And then stress concentration factor of tooth fillet curve was express the function of addendum modification coefficient using comparison between theory and finite element analysis.
