The improvement of thermal-hydraulic analysis techniques is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants. The one-dimensional two-fluid model has been adopted in state-of-the-art thermal-hydraulic system codes. Current constitutive equations used in the system codes reach a mature level. Some exceptions are the partition method of wall friction in the momentum equation of the two-fluid model and the interfacial drag force model for a horizontal two-phase flow. This study is focused on deriving the partition method of wall friction in the momentum equation of the two-fluid model and modeling the interfacial drag force model for a horizontal bubbly flow. The one-dimensional momentum equation in the two-fluid model is derived from the local momentum equation. The derived one-dimensional momentum equation demonstrates that total wall friction should be apportioned to gas and liquid phases based on the phasic volume fraction, which is the same as that used in the SPACE code. The constitutive equations for the interfacial drag force are also identified. Based on the assessments, the Rassame-Hibiki correlation, Hibiki-Ishii correlation, Ishii-Zuber correlation, and Rassame-Hibiki correlation are recommended for computing the distribution parameter, interfacial area concentration, drag coefficient, and relative velocity covariance of a horizontal bubbly flow, respectively.
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been widely utilized as a versatile tool not only for imaging surfaces but also for understanding nano-scale interfacial phenomena. By measuring the responses of the photo detector due to bending and torsion of the cantilever, which are caused by the interactions between the probe and the sample surface, various interfacial phenomena and properties can be explored. One of the challenges faced by AFM researchers originates in the physics of measuring the small forces that act between the probe of a force sensing cantilever and the sample. To understand the interactions between the probe and the sample quantitatively, the force calibration is essential. In this work, the procedures used to calibrate AFM instrumentation for nano-scale force measurement in normal and lateral directions are reviewed.
In this study, a hydrogenated lecithin-containing nanoemulsion was prepared from hydrogenated lecithin and silicone oil. Tween-60 and liquid paraffin, widely known emulsifiers, were used as standard substances, and high shear was produced by utilizing a high shear homogenizer and microfluidizer. The properties of the nanoemulsion prepared with hydrogenated lecithin were evaluated by measuring interfacial tension, dynamic interfacial tension, droplet size, zeta-potential, friction force, skin surface hygrometery, and dermal safety. The interfacial tension of lecinol S10/silicone oil was lower than that of lecinol S10/liquid paraffin. The nanoemulsion prepared from hydrogenated lecithin shows lower zeta-potential, skin surface hygrometery, and friction force compared with a general emulsion. The silicone nanoemulsion prepared from hydrogenated lecithin showed a zero value in the patch test and thus exhibits high dermal safety.
A simple method to calculate the interfacial tension between two immiscible molten polymers has been developed. The theory is based on the significant structure theory of liquids. The energy of adhesion is expressed as a geometric mean of the cohesion energies multiplied by correction factor $({\Phi}12)$, ${\Delta}E_{12}={\Phi}_{12}\sqrt{{\Delta}E_{11}{\Delta}E_{22^{\circ}}$. In the calculation of ${\Delta}E_{11}\;and\;{\Delta}E_{22}$, a quasilattice of polymer chains has been assumed. It is assured that, besides the dispersion force, the polar force interactions between polymer constituent groups should be considered in the calculation of the interfacial tensions.

This paper presents the numerical design technology of a passive orifice fluid damper system especially for the characteristics between the damper piston velocity and the damping force. Numerical analysis with the visual interfacial modeling technique was applied into the analysis of the damper system's dynamics. A prototype orifice fluid damper was manufactured and experimentally tested to validate the numerical simulation results. The performances of various damper system schemes were investigated based on the verified numerical simulation model of orifice fluid damper.

A series of laboratory experiments has been performed to investigate the behaviour of interfacial layer of saltwater wedge in estuary. Experimental conditions have been established according to densimetric Froude number, which is a dimensionless number comparing inertia force with buoyancy due to the density difference. To observe the behaviour of saltwater wedge, conductivity meter has been used to detect salinity. Time averaged and temporal variation of observed properties have been analyzed to determine and investigate the interfacial layer. The location and profile of interfacial layers have shown the dependency on densimetric Froude number. The thickness of interfacial layer has been also dependent on the variation of densimetric Froude number.

Natural rubbers (NR) reinforced by multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) was found to show extraordinary improvement of mechanical property. We speculated that this was owing to the interfacial phase that surrounded CNT and investigated about the phase by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Using force modulation mode and force-distance curve analyses, we succeeded in obtaining the information of its nanometer-scale rheological property. We found that was actually surrounded by the interfacial phase, that had softer modulus than NR matrix.
In this study, the interfacial stresses in RC beams strengthened by externally bonded prestressed GFRP laminate are evaluated using an analytical approach, based on the equilibrium equations and boundary conditions. A comparison of the interfacial stresses obtained from the present analytical model and other existing models is undertaken. Otherwise, a parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of geometrical and material properties on the variation of interfacial stresses in damaged RC beams strengthened by externally bonded prestressed GFRP laminate. The results obtained indicate that the damage degree has little effect on the maximum shear stress, with a variation less than 5% between the damaged and undamaged RC beams. However, the results also reveal that the prestressing level has a significant effect on the interfacial stresses; hence the damaged RC beam strengthened with an initial prestressing force of 100 kN gives 110% higher maximum shear stress than the damaged RC beam strengthened with an initial prestressing force of 50 kN. The values of shear stress obtained by the analytical approach are approximately equal to 44% of those obtained from the numerical solution, while the interfacial normal stresses predicted by the numerical study are approximately 26% higher than those calculated by the analytical solution.

A sequence of visually experimental observations was conducted to investigate the flow boiling and two-phase flow in a coiled tube. Different boiling modes and bubble dynamical evolutions were identified for better recognizing the phenomena and understanding the two-phase flow evolution and heat transfer mechanisms. The dissolved gases and remained vapor would serve as foreign nucleation sites, and together with the effect of buoyancy, centrifugal force and liquid flow, these also induce very different flow boiling nucleation, boiling modes, bubble dynamical behavior, and further the boiling heat transfer performance. Bubbly flow, plug flow, slug flow, stratified/wavy flow and annular flow were observed during the boiling process in the coiled tube. Particularly the effects of flow reconstructing and thermal non-equilibrium release in the bends were noted and discussed with the physical understanding. Coupled with the effects of the buoyancy, centrifugal force and inertia or momentum ratio of the two fluids, the flow reconstructing and thermal non-equilibrium release effects have critical importance for flow pattern in the bends and flow evolution in next straight sections.

The general solution of the anti-plane shear problem for the curved interfacial crack between viscoelastic foam and composites was investigated with the complex variable displacement function and Kelvin-Maxwell model. The Laplace transform was applied to treat the viscoelastic characteristics of foam in the analysis. The stress intensity factor near the interfacial crack tip was predicted by considering both anisotropic and viscoelastic properties of two different materials. The results showed that the stress intensity factor increased with increasing the curvature of the curved interfacial crack and it also increased and eventually converged to a specific value with increasing time.
