  • Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of professional self-concept and ethical awareness of dental hygiene (department) students attending a university located in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do on patients' willingness to protect personal information. Methods: Professional self-concept, ethical disposition, and patients' personal information protection intention according to general characteristics were analyzed using t-tests and one-way ANOVA. After confirming the correlation through Pearson's correlation analysis, the effect on the patient's personal information protection intention was confirmed using multiple regression analysis. Results: Professional self-concept, ethical disposition, and the patients' willingness to protect personal information all showed positive correlations. The higher the communication skills of professional self-concept and the higher the idealism of ethical orientation, the higher the patients' willingness to protect personal information. Conclusions: This study, ascertained the effect of dental hygiene students' professional self-concept and ethical consciousness on patients' personal information protection practices. The results suggest that it is necessary to develop an educational program that can enhance the practice of dental hygienists to protect patients' personal information, and to develop and conduct continuous policy development and research.

Based on our findings, we discussed the information protection of privacy on Facebook.

  • In 2005, Korean government created the Internet Personal Identification Number (i-PIN) for a new online personal identification system to protect citizens' personal information against criminal abuse. However, i-PINs have not been widely in use over a decade. Although many people joined the i-PIN service, its actual use rate has been low. This study intends to identify the factors necessary to boost the continuous use of i-PINs. It was shown that government support and perceived security had a positive effect on the perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness of the i-PIN, respectively. Perceived security also directly affected the continuous use intention of the i-PIN. The perceived ease of use significantly affected the perceived usefulness, but it did not affect the intention to continuously use the i-PIN. The factor that had the most significant influence on the continuous use intention of the i-PIN was perceived usefulness. To increase the i-PIN use rate, Korean government must reduce users' anxiety through strict security functions, and must attempt to help people use the i-PIN easily.

  • Social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook lead to potential security risks, which consequently raise public concerns about privacy. However, most people rarely make active efforts to protect their personal data, even though they have shown increasing concerns about privacy. Therefore, this study examines the factors that determine social media users' behavior of using privacy settings and testifies the existence of privacy paradox in such a context. In addition, it investigates the mediating effects of implementation intentions on the relationship between intentions and behaviors. In the study, we collected data through questionnaires, and the respondents were undergraduate and graduate students in South Korea. After a pilot test (n = 92) and a set of face-to-face interviews, 266 usable responses were retrieved for data analysis finally. The results confirmed the existence of the privacy paradox regarding the use of social media privacy settings. And the implication intention did positively mediate the relationship between intention and behavior in the context of social media privacy settings. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first in the information privacy literature to introduce the notion of implementation intention which is a much more powerful explanation and prediction of actual behavior than the (behavioral) intention.

  • In order to provide the efficient personalized services, the organizations and the companies collect and manage the personal information. However, there have been increasing privacy concerns since the personal information might be misused and spread over in public by the database administrators or the information users. Even in the systems in which organizations or companies control access to personal information according to their access policy in order to protect personal information, it is not easy to fully reflect the information subjects' intention on the access control to their own Personal information. This paper proposes a policy-based access control mechanism for the personal information which prevents unauthorized information users from illegally accessing the personal information and enables the information subjects to control access over their own information. In the proposed mechanism, the individuals' personal information which is encrypted with different keys is stored into the directory repository. For the access control, information subjects set up their own access control policy for their personal information and the policies are used to provide legal information users with the access keys.

  • The government was fully aware of the gravity of a recent massive leak of personal information of credit card users. Meanwhile, the government just took a light disciplinary action by imposing a fine, but it showed its intention to strengthen the regulations by taking the severest disciplinary action. The tightened regulations against personal information leak will be applied to the private security industry without exception to protect individual people's property and lives if such an incident occurs in that industry that deals with a wide variety of personal information such as CCTV data or privacy information all the time. The purpose of this study was to examine the state of the protection and management of personal information for service users among private security firms in an effort to suggest some reform measures. The findings of the study were as follows: First, administrators or managers who are involved with personal information protection should make a full-fledged effort to gather information. Second, counseling or related programs should be provided for small and mid-sized security firms to guarantee thorough personal information protection. Third, Korea Security Association should improve the educational system related to personal information protection to resolve problems with this education currently provided for managers and employees of these companies.

  • With an extensive proliferation of information and communication technology, the volume and amount of digital information collected and utilized on the Internet have been increasing rapidly. Also on the rapid rise are side effects such as unintended breach of accumulated personal information and consequent invasion of personal privacy. Informational self-determination is rarely practiced, despite various states' legal efforts to redress data subjects' damage. Personal health information, in particular, is a subcategory of personal information where informational self-determination is hardly practiced enough. The observation is contrasted with the socio-economic inconvenience that may follow due to its sensitive nature containing individuals' physical and health conditions. This research, therefore, reviews factors of self-determination on personal health information while referring to the protection motivation theory (PMT), the long-time framework to understand personal information protection. Empirical analysis of 200 data surveyed reveals threat-appraisal (perceived vulnerability and perceived severity of threats) and coping-appraisal (perceived response effectiveness), in addition to individual levels of concern regarding provided personal health information, influence self-determination to protect personal health information. The research proposes theoretical findings and practical suggestions along with reference for future research topics.

  • In this paper, the security behaviors and attitudes related with the personal information of teenagers were investigated using empirical data based on rational behavior theory and protection motivation theory. An experiment for teenagers was conducted on Excel and the statistical packages (i.e., SPSS 21.0 and SmartPLS2.0.M3) to see how self-efficiency, security attitude, security intention and individual innovation affect their security behaviors. The experimental results showed that the security behaviors and attitudes of teenagers between internet and information devices are closely related, and the social influences can affect personal self-efficacy and security attitudes. Finally, we can know that teenagers should recognize the importance of security and protect their personal information safely through continuous education and training so that they can be linked to security behaviors.
