  • There exist a lot of factors and restrictions for the design of solid rocket motors like burning rate, of solid propellant, demanded thrust, chamber pressure, diameter, length, weight and acceleration. For the optimization of these factors and restrictions, integrated design software for internal/external ballistic analysis was developed and verified by the performance test of solid rocket motors.

  • Propellants pressurized and fed into the combustion chamber undergoes the mechanical, chemical combustion processes. Along with their distinctive physical characteristics, propellant combustion is typically divided into the processes; injection, atomization, mixing, vaporization and chemical reaction. These processes assumed to happen in a serial manner are strongly coupled, thereby involves formidable physical complexities. In this study a numerical experiment is attempted to simulate the burning sprays due to OFO, FOF triplet / FOOF split doublet injectors. Based on Eulerian-Lagrangian frame, Navier-Stokes equation system for compressible flows is preconditioned with low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model and time-integrated by LU-SGS, and the sprays are described by DSF model with the characteristics initialized by experimentally determined spray characteristics. Simplified single global reaction model approximates heptane-air reaction. It was observed that FOOF split doublet injector shows better atmization with shortest residence and the FOF triplet injector produces better combustion performance.

  • Micro solid propellant thruster is the most feasible for development with current MEMS. Basic components of micro solid propellant thruster are diverging nozzle, micro igniter, combustion chamber, and solid propellant. Micro nozzles and micro chambers were fabricated using photosensitive glass by anisotropic wet etching technique. Micro Pt heaters on glass membrane which ignited solid propellant were developed. Components of thruster were integrated. Successful ignition was observed.

  • The blowdown oxidizer feeding system is effective in the respect of higher reliability by the small number of parts and the absence of additional pressurization tanks, but it also has the unfavorable disadvantage such as thrust variation during the operation. Thus, in order to understand the these performance characteristics inherent in the Hybrid Rocket Motor (HRM) with blowdown oxidizer feeding system, this study proposed the integrated mathematical model to describe physical phenomena in the following parts: the oxidizer tank, combustion chamber, fuel grain, nozzle and injector.

  • A testing system was developed to improve the reliability of printhead and several printheads were tested. We developed a thermally driven monolithic inkjet printhead comprising dome-shaped ink chambers, thin film nozzle guides, and omega-shaped heaters integrated on the top surface of each chamber. To perform a fatigue test of an inkjet printhead, the testing system automatically detects a heating failure using a Wheatstone bridge circuit. Various models were designed and tested to develop a more reliable printhead. Two design parameters of the width of reinforcing layer and heater were investigated in the test. Specially., the reinforcing layer was introduced to improve the fatigue life of printhead. The life-span of heater with a reinforcing layer was longer than that without a reinforcing layer. The wider the heater was, the longer the life of printhead was.

  • Ink jet printheads are now widely used in manufacturing processes that require precise dispensing of materials. Today, Dimatix manufactures a variety of drop-on-demand ink jet printheads for the industrial printing market, but emerging opportunities present fresh challenges to our technology. In response to requirements for digitally printing on flexible substrates and dispensing novel electronic fluids, we are developing next generation jetting technology based on our three-dimensional silicon MEMS technology with a piezo-driven pumping chamber integrated into the chip structure. This presentation will address the functional and physical design features and properties of Dimatix's MEMS process, its characteristics, reliability and usability. Examples of opportunities and applications for digitally printing electronic fluids on flexible substrates with MEMS-based ink jet technology will be presented.

  • Airframe-integrated Scramjet engines of NASA Langley type consist of a compressor, a combustion chamber and a nozzle. When some disturbances occur in one module of the engine, its influences are propagated to other modules. In this study, it is investigated numerically how shock waves were caused by thermal choking in one module propagate upstream and how they influence adjacent modules. The calculations are carried out in 2-dimensional supersonic viscous flow model using explicit TVD scheme in generalized coordinates. The adverse pressure gradient caused by heat addition brings about separation of the wall boundary layers and formation of the oblique shock wave that proceed to upstream. This moving shock wave formed one module blocks the flow coming into the adjacent modules, which makes the modules unstarted.

  • For this purpose, the authors proposed and proved usefulness of the modified mean skin temperature which is integrated mean radiation temperature and the effect of floor contacted heat conduction. The mean radiation temperature is applied form factor between half cross-legged human body and surrounding wall of indoor. In addition the floor contacted heat conduction is applied heat transfer coefficient of half cross-legged human body. Eight Korean young men were targeted for the experiment. From the experiment the authors excerpted physiological reaction and psychological reaction in Ondol environment which is combined physiccal environmental factor of artificial climate chamber, air and floor temperature. As a result of the experiment it is confirmed that heat conduction has more impact than heat exchange from existing research for the heat exchange between half cross-legged human body and surrounding wall in Ondol thermal environment. Thereby, it is proved the effectiveness of the modified mean skin temperature which is added floor contacted temperature to the Ondol thermal environmental evaluation index.

  • The new system using a glow discharge atomic emission spectrometer for the direct analysis of solid samples has been developed and characterized. The system was consisted of new glow discharge cell improved previous gas-jet boosted nozzle and radio-frequency power supply. In the case of previous type glow discharge chamber, it had been fitted trace analysis of low alloy steel with low discharge power, because it was to decrease redeposition and increase sample weight loss. But it had a problem that plasma becomes unstale due to increased sample weight loss and redeposition resulting from the high discharge power. Because of being problem of previous glow discharge, it is impossible to analyze using high power. The modified gas-jet boosted glow discharge to solve this problem would improve to be less sample loss rate of modified nozzle than sample loss rate of previous nozzle on the equal discharge condition, and improve to increase stability of plasma. The effect of discharge parameters such as discharge pressure, gas flow rate and power on the sample loss rate, emission intensity has been studied to find optimum discharge conditions. The calibration curves of Fe were obtained with 3 low-alloy samples.

  • We have investigated the formation techniques of copper thin films which would be useful for sub-quarter-micron integrated circuits. A chemical vapor deposition technology has been tried for the better side wall formation of the thin films, and a metal organic compound, named (hface)Cu(VTMS) (hexafluoroacetylacetonate vinyltrimethylsilane copper(I)) was used as the precursors. We have deposited the copper thin films on TiN and $SiO_2$substrates. The film resistivity and deposition selectivity have been measured as functions of substrate temperature and chamber pressure. Best electrical properties were obtained at $180^{\circ}C$ of substrate temperature and 0.6 Torr of chamber pressure. Under the optimum deposition conditions, polycrystalline copper structures were observed to be grown, and the deposition rate of 120 nm/min was measured. The electrical resistivity as low as 0.25$mu \Omega$.cm, and the surface roughness of 15.5 nm were also measured. These are the suitable electrical and material properties required in the sub-quarter-micron device fabrication. Also, in the substrate temperature range of 140-$250^{\circ}C$, high deposition selectivity was observed between TiN and $SiO_2$.
