  • This paper deals with the electric insulator in terms of its toughness. The toughness is determined by the notched beam test and it is found that the toughness of electric insulator largely depends on the porosity as well as crystalline phases. This study also indicates that the Korean electric insulators have improved its toughness for last seven years and the recent products show comparable properties with imported insulator.

  • Recently the extensive use of composite insulators for transmission lines can ultimately be justified only on long-term qualification tests. Especially, it is possible for the Polymer insulator to be aged in according to the environment in which it is used this may bring about the decrease of the duration of voltage application. So, this paper deals with aging property of the polymer insulator installed at real transmission line in the industry area. The contact angle, arc test, tracking test were measured for acquiring the degradation characteristics of silicone rubber and the SEM, XRF, FT-IR tests were measured for analyzing the crack and components. Also the surface leakage current of the polymer insulator was compared with that of the porcelain insulator. Finally, we knew that the aging property was not appeared during seven months at real transmission line in the industry area.

  • In a section of AC electric railway, a phase between the sections is different although voltage levels supplied from substations are the same. Therefore, section insulators have been installed to electrically divide between the sections. Two differenet types of section insulator, namely an overlap type and insulator type, are used. In Korean high-speed lines, overlap type section insulator has been adopted. And, insulator type is used in conventional line. The overlap type has the advantage of having no speed limit, but has the disadvantage of requiring long section length. However, the insulator type has the advantage of section length, but also has the disadvantage of having speed limit. In Korean conventional line, an insulator type one relies on the import and there is some problem with wear. In this study, we developed the insulator type section insulator which adopts Teflon tube insulation material. The Teflon material has advantage of the excellent electrical characteristics and wear-resistance characteristics for a longer expected life than that made of existing FRP. In order to compare wear characteristics between the materials, wear tests with reciprocal wear tester are performed. And dynamic behavior tests between the insulators and pantograph are also performed for showing its better dynamic characteristics.

  • It is extremely important to improve methodologies for the lifetime assessment of porcelain insulators. While there has been a considerable amount of work regarding the phenomena of lifetime distributions, most of the studies assume that aging distributions follow the Weibull distribution. However, the true underlying distribution is unknown, giving rise to unrealistic inferences, such as parameter estimations. In this article, we review several distributions that are commonly used in reliability and survival analysis, such as the exponential, Weibull, log-normal, and gamma distributions. Some properties, including the characteristics of failure rates of these distributions, are presented. We use a Bayesian approach for model selection and parameter estimation procedures. A well-known measure, called the Bayes factor, is used to find the most plausible model among several contending models. The posterior mean can be used as a parameter estimate for unknown parameters, once a model with the highest posterior probability is selected. Extensive simulation studies are performed to demonstrate our methodologies.

  • In this paper, it was demonstrated that the organic thin film transistors with the organic gate insulators were fabricated by vapor deposition polymerization (VDP) processing. The configuration of OTFTs was a staggered-inverted top-contact structure and gate dielectric layer was deposited with 0.45 ${\mu}m$ thickness. In order to form polyimide as a gate insulator, VDP process was also introduced instead of spin-coating process. Polyimide film was respectively co-deposited with different materials. One was from a 4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA) and 4, 4'-oxydianiline (ODA) and the other was from 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) and ODA. And it was also cured at 150 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour followed by 200 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. Electrical characteristics of the organic thin-film transistors were detailed comparisons between the ODPA-ODA and the 6FDA-ODA which were used as gate insulator.

  • The HVDC transformer which is one of the main equipments for HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) electric power transmission systems is exposed to not only AC voltage but also the inflowing DC voltage which comes from the DC-AC converter systems. Therefore, the HVDC transformer insulation system is required to withstand the electric field stress under AC, DC and DC polarity reversal conditions. However the electric field distributions under those conditions are different because the AC electric field and DC electric field are governed by permittivity and conductivity, respectively. In this study, the changes of electric potential and electric field of conventional AC transformer insulation system under DC polarity reversal test condition were analyzed by FEM(Finite Element Method). The DC electric field stress was concentrated in the solid insulators while the AC electric field stress was concentrated in the mineral oil. In addition, the electric stress under that condition which is affected by the surface charge accumulation at the interfaces between insulators was evaluated. The stress in some parts could be higher than that of AC and DC condition, during polarity reversal test. The result of this study would be helpful for the HVDC transformer insulation system design.
