This paper proposes balancing scheduling effort more evenly between the compiler and the processor, by introducing independently scheduled VLIW instructions. Aggressively Packed VLIW (APVLIW) processor is aimed specifically at independent scheduling Very Long Instruction Word(VLIW) instructions with dependency information. The APVLIW processor independently schedules earth instruction within long instructions using functional unit and dynamic scheduler pairs. Every dynamic scheduler dynamically checks far data dependencies and resource collisions while scheduling each instruction. This scheduling is especially effective in applications containing loops. We simulate the architecture and show that the APVLIW processor performs significantly better than the VLIW processor for a wide range of cache sizes and across various numerical benchmark applications.
Memory reference instruction caused by cache miss is the critical factor that limits the processing power of processor. Cache prefetching technique is an effective way to reduce the latency due to memory access. However, excessively aggressive prefetch leads to cache pollution and finally to cancel out the advantage of prefetch. In this study, an active prefetch filtering scheme is introduced which dynamically decides whether to commence prefetching after referring a filtering table to reduce the cache pollution due to unnecessary prefetches. For the precision filtering, an evicted address referencing scheme has been proposed where the filter directly compares the current prefetch address with previous unnecessary prefetch addresses stored in filtering table. Moreover, a small sized exclusive prefetch cache has been introduced to increase the amount of eviction of unnecessarily prefetched addresses to enhance the accuracy of dynamic filtering. The exclusive prefetch cache also prevents useful demand data from being pushed out by prefetched data, while the evicted address direct referencing scheme enables the prefetch cache to keep most of useful prefetch data within its small size. Experimental results from commonly used general and multimedia benchmarks show that the average cache miss ratio has been decreased by $13.3{\%}$ by virtue of enhanced filtering accuracy compared with conventional schemes.
Maximum intensity projection (MIP) is a volume rendering method which extracts maximum values along the viewing direction through volume data. It visualizes high-density structures, such as angio-graphic datasets so that it is frequently used in medical imaging systems. We have proposed an efficient two-step MIP acceleration method that uses the recent CPUs. First, we exploited SIMD instructions to reduce conditional branch instructions which take up a considerable part of whole rendering process, so that we improved rendering speed. Second, we proposed a new method, which accesses volume and image data successively by modifying the shear-warp rendering. This method improves memory access patterns so that cache misses are reduced. Using the current CPUs, our method improved the rendering speed by a factor of 7 than that of the shear-warp rendering.
AE64000 is the 64-bit high-performance microprocessor that ADC Co. Ltd. is developing for an embedded environment. It has a 5-stage pipeline and uses Havard architecture with a separated instruction and data caches. It also provides SIMD-like DSP and FP operation by enabling the 8/16/32/64-bit MAC operation on 64-bit registers. AE64000 processor implements the EISC ISA and uses the instruction folding mechanism (Instruction Folding Unit) that effectively deals with LERI instruction in EISC ISA. But this unit makes branch prediction behavior difficult. In this paper, we designs a branch predictor optimized for AE64000 Pipeline and develops a AES4000 simulator that has cycle-level precision to validate the performance of the designed branch predictor. We makes TAC(Target address cache) and BPT(branch prediction table) seperated for effective branch prediction and uses the BPT(removed indexed) that has no address tags.

To provide performance gains by reducing the operand referencing latency and data cache bandwidth requirements, we present an operand reference prediction cache (ORPC) which predicts operand value and address translation during the instruction fetch stage. The prediction is verified in the early stage, and thus it minimizes the performance penalty caused by the misprediction. Through the trace-driven simulation of six benchmark programs, the performance improvement by proposed three aRPC stmctures (OfiPC1, OfiPC2. ORPC3)is analysed and validated.

As the process technology scales down, multi-core processors cause serious problems such as increased interconnection delay, high power consumption and thermal problems. To solve the problems in 2D multi-core processors, researchers have focused on the 3D multi-core processor architecture. Compared to the 2D multi-core processor, the 3D multi-core processor decreases interconnection delay by reducing wire length significantly, since each core on different layers is connected using vertical through-silicon via(TSV). However, the power density in the 3D multi-core processor is increased dramatically compared to that in the 2D multi-core processor, because multiple cores are stacked vertically. Unfortunately, increased power density causes thermal problems, resulting in high cooling cost, negative impact on the reliability. Therefore, temperature should be considered together with performance in designing 3D multi-core processors. In this work, we analyze the temperature of the cache in quad-core processors varying cache organization. Then, we propose the low-temperature cache organization to overcome the thermal problems. Our evaluation shows that peak temperature of the instruction cache is lower than threshold. The peak temperature of the data cache is higher than threshold when the cache is composed of many ways. According to the results, our proposed cache organization not only efficiently reduces the peak temperature but also reduces the performance degradation for 3D quad-core processors.

GPUs can provide high throughput with latency hiding by executing many warps in parallel. MSHR(Miss Status Holding Registers) for L1 data cache tracks cache miss requests until required data is serviced from lower level memory. In recent GPUs, excessive requests for cache resources cause underutilization problem of GPU resources due to cache resource reservation fails. In this paper, we propose a new warp scheduling technique to reduce stall cycles under MSHR resource shortage. Cache miss rates for each warp is predicted based on the observation that each warp shows similar cache miss rates for long period. The warps showing low miss rates or computation-intensive warps are given high priority to be issued when MSHR is full status. Our proposal improves GPU performance by utilizing cache resource more efficiently based on cache miss rate prediction and monitoring the MSHR entries. According to our experimental results, reservation fail cycles can be reduced by 25.7% and IPC is increased by 6.2% with the proposed scheduling technique compared to loose round robin scheduler.
In this study, we designed an ARM9 compatible RISC microprocessor using VHDL. The microprocessor was designed to support Harvard architecture with separate instruction cache and data cache. The state machine was optimized for multi-cycle instructions. In addition, a data forwarding mechanism was adopted to reduce the stall cycles due to data hazards. Assembly programs were up-loaded into a ROM block for system-level simulation. Proper operation of the designed microprocessor was confirmed by investigating the contents of the internal registers as well as the RAM block. Futhermore, the simulation results clearly indicated that the operation speed of the processor designed in this study is enhanced by reducing the execution cycles required for multiplication related instructions.

사용된 명령어들은 SPARC(Scalable Processor ARChitecture) V9에 기준 하였고 구현은 Verilog-HDL(Hardwave Description Language)을 사용하여 기능 수준으로 기술되고 검증되었다.

A multiprocessor microprocessor named SMPC(scaleable multiprocessor chip) that contains tow IU (integer unit) is presented in this paper. It can execute multiple instructions from several tasks exploiting task-level parallelism that is free from instruction dependencies, and provide high performance and throughput on both single program and multiprogramming environments. the IU is a 32-bit scalar processor expecially designed to boost up the performance of string manipulations which are frequently used in RDBMS(relational data base management system) applications. A memory management unit and a data cache shared by two IUs improve the performance and reduce the chip area required. ETH SMPC is implemented in VLSI circuit by custom design and automated design tools.
