  • Information regarding the status of lunch box service for children and juveniles from nutritionally vulnerable families is limited and has not been assessed from the view of beneficiaries. Therefore, this study intended to determine the satisfaction, current status, menu preferences, and dietary habits of recipients served lunch-box meals from Pocheon city. There were 41 subjects from primary schools and 73 from secondary schools. Although 94.8% answered that the foods were generally helpful, as much as 28.9% replied that the amount of food provided was too little. Only 77.2% answered that they eat the foods always or usually, 29.5% answered that they throw away leftover foods, and only 71.9% recycled empty containers, suggesting the need for instruction regarding how to deal with leftover foods and containers. Food preferences were high for deep-fried foods and meats and low for fish and vegetables, and that for vegetable egg rolls was relatively high, suggesting the need to increase vegetable intake. Adherences to guidelines regarding street foods was the lowest in both elementary and secondary school students, suggesting that the contents of nutrition education for these students should include materials to improve dietary habits, along with increasing the consumption of milk.

  • The present study examines language used to talk about the global coronavirus pandemic during a three-month period of movement control order in Malaysia. More specifically, a corpus of online letters to the editor of a local popular national newspaper was collected during the time in which the official quarantine instruction was initiated, resulting in a total of 303 online letters written by Malaysians that were analyzed through use of corpus linguistics techniques. For this purpose, the latest version of #LancsBox 5.0 (Brezina et al., 2020) is used to analyze patterns of language surrounding the portrayal of Covid-19 and further visualizing them by use of collocation networks. Findings present 25 statistically significant collocates that share an interesting relationship in revealing what the letters are about and thus, reflecting how Malaysians perceive and receive news about the pandemic during this time. Recurring topics and expressions include describing the virus in terms of metaphorical use of language (Covid-19 does not discriminate), preparing for an economic fallout (Prihatin Economic Stimulus Package), and preference to associate Covid-19 as a pandemic (impacts of the Covid19 pandemic) rather than an outbreak (first/second/third wave of the outbreak). Implications of the study resonates with findings from Azizan et al. (2020) where constructions of positive discourse among Malaysian writers may reflect the culture and society that make up the nation.

  • A land and sea breeze and the cause of wind are learned through a convection current box experiment in elementary science class. The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary students' perception and inferring process about a land and sea breeze. For this purpose, the 159 elementary students who lived in J city were collected. The results of this study showed that the students who perceived correctly about a land and sea breeze and the cause of wind were only 45 persons(28.3%). And most of the students understood the direction of the wind as they observed in the experiment. That is, most of the students did not understand a direction of a land and sea breeze by a inferring process from the experimental result. They did not pass by a inferring process. These results demand that a new convection current box experimental set is to be developed, as well as the experimental instruction more focused on the inferring process, for the perception of a land and sea breeze and the cause of wind.

  • The purpose of this study was to construct an issue-centered discussion instructional model for Home Economics and to determine its effect on middle school students' critical thinking. The research questions were posed as below. 1) The object and content of home economics in the 7th national middle school curricula are analyzed to sort out possible issues. 2) An issue-centered discussion instructional model is constructed to be applicable to middle school home economics class. and a lesson plan is prepared. 3) The effect of the issue-centered discussion instructional model developed in this study on student critical thinking faculty is examined. The findings of this study were as follows : First. seven criteria were selected to determine what types of issues were applicable to home economics lesson. Based on the selected criteria. 41 themes of issues were extracted from the 7th middle school textbooks. and their content validity was verified. Second, an issue-centered discussion instructional model was designed to deal with four themes in eight sessions in the procedure of problem raising, confirming, term defining. tentative alternative selecting, data gathering. discussing/critical approaching. and selecting/concluding. Third, two different third-year classes of K middle school in the city of Busan that consisted of 75 students were respectively selected as an experimental group and a control group, and the experiment was conducted in eight sessions for five weeks to see whether the teaching plan brought any changes to the critical mind of the students. The experimental group exposed to the issue-centered discussion lesson made a significant progress in critical thinking faculty(P<.05). In particular. that instruction gave a favorable impact on demonstration evaluating(P<.05). one of the critical thinking subfactors. When the students were asked to assess the issue-centered discussion lesson. most of them viewed it favorably. In the future, more research efforts should be dedicated to enhancing the practical applicability of issue-centered discussion instruction in home economics education. developing good evaluation tools about critical thinking faculty and finding out how discussion instruction could be conducted more efficiently.

  • This study was conducted to assess any change in students' views on the nature of science (NOS) after lessons through the activities of model construction and pattern identification. The instrument used to examine NOS views was the Views of Nature of Science questionnaire (VNOS). Four students' responses on VNOS before and after instruction were analyzed. The two levels of their views, novice and expert, were judged by the authors based on criteria set by several science educators. The instruction consisted of six hours of the so-called black box and cube activities developed for model construction and pattern identification, respectively. Students' views were at the novice level in definition of scientific theory, tentativeness of scientific knowledge, difference of hypotheses, theories and laws, model construction, and creativity and imagination in experiments and investigations. Students' views on NOS knowledge such as model and theory have improved for two students after instruction. The improvement seemed to be due to an explicit approach using the activities of model construction and pattern identification. The factors of changes and no-changes of views on NOS were identified and discussed in terms of improvement of the views.

  • The fractional concept consists of various meaning, so that it is difficult to understand in primary school mathematics. In this article, we intend to analyze the cognition of 54 pre-service elementary teachers about the operations of partitioning and iterating that are based on Steffe's fraction schemes. The following fraction problem is used in this analysis: If the bar $\Box$ represent 3/8, then create a bar that is equivalent to 4/3. In our analysis, the 43% of pre-service elementary teachers can be well to treat the operations of partitioning and iteration. The 33% are use the equivalent fractions. But the 19% is not good. From the our analysis, it is important that pre-service elementary teachers must be have experimental(operational) thinking as the science education. And in this study we apply the operations of partitioning and iterating to the fraction activity of textbooks.
