Effects of feeding of 9.95 mg free gossypol/kg live weight through cottonseed meal (CSM) were studied in 20 intact male calves fed barley or sorghum as source of cereal during the experimental duration of 210 days. Serum concentration of total protein, albumin, globulin and their ratio did not vary because of protein (gossypol) or cereal sources. Serum level of cholesterol and urea were lower (p<0.05) in sorghum than barley fed calves. Feeding of gossypol through CSM enhanced (p<0.05) serum cholesterol. An interaction between protein and period was observed with respect to serum concentrations of urea, creatinine and alanine transferase. The levels of serum creatinine and alanine transferase increased (p<0.05) following 120 days of experimental feeding in calves fed CSM diets compared to the control animals fed groundnut meal diets. No effect of feeding gossypol was, however, evident on the serum enzymes viz. alanine and aspartate transferases and alkaline phosphatase. Moreover, the source of cereal and protein did not appear to influence the metabolic profile of the calves. Humoral immune response, measured through antibody titre against Brucella abortus S99 innoculation, revealed a delayed and depressed seroreactivity indicative of immunocompromisation because of the phytotoxin gossypol. In conclusion, the feeding of gossypol at the designated levels, although had no deleterious clinico-biochemical manifestations, affected the humoral immune response of the calves.

This study was carried to select the proper vegetation base materials which improve soil quality in abandoned coal mine areas. Also, we aimed at the feasibility of the direct seeding method without soil molding for the ecological restoration in those areas. We set total eight plots within the study site established on an abandoned coal mine area near Taebaek city, Gangwon province in April 2006. The plots were classified as two groups(straw mats mulching and no mulching), and the four treatments (C; control, MI; microbial innoculation, WC; wood chip, OF; organic fertilizer) were applied in each two groups for the soil conditioning. The survival of Pinus densiflora was highest among other species(Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Amorpha fruticosa and Arundinella hirta). For the non straw mat, the survival rate of Pinus densiflora seedlings was highest in the WC treatment($1,756trees/m^2$). For the straw mat, survival rate of Pinus densiflora seedlings was also highest in the WC treatment ($1,622trees/m^2$). In addition, for the non straw mat, the height growth of Pinus densiflora seedling was highest in the OF treatment($12.4{\pm}3.9cm$). For the straw mat, the height growth of Pinus densiflora seedling was also highest in the OF treatment($18.7{\pm}5.3cm$). In general, organic fertilizer treatment with the straw mat was most effective for seedling growth. Also, we suggested that the direct seeding method without soil molding could be sufficiently possible for revegetating abandoned coal mine, Korea.
Economic injury levels (EILs) and economic control threshold (ET) were estimated for the Tea red spider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida(Acari, Tetranychidae) in Rubus coreanus Miquel. T. kanzawai density increased until the early-July and thereafter decreased in all plots except the non-innoculation plot where initial density of the mite were different each 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 adults per plant branch on May 7 in 2008. And the occurrence of the densities were increased higher innoculated density than different innoculation density. The yield was decreased with increasing initial mite density and thereby the rates of yield loss was increased with increasing initial mite density. And T. kanzawai occurrence density, yields and the rates of yield loss, where initial density of the mite were different each 0, 2, 5, 10 and 20 adults per plant branch on May 8 in 2009 were similar tendency to 2008 year results. The relationship between initial T. kanzawai densities and the yield losses was well described by a linear regression, Y = 0.6545X + 3.0425 ($R^2$ = 0.93) in 2008, Y = 0.9031X + 2.0899($R^2$ = 0.96) in 2009. Based on the relationship, the number of adults per plant branch(EILs) which can cause 5% loss of yield was estimated to be approximately 3.0 in 2008 and 3.2 in 2009. And the ET was estimated to be approximately 2.4 in 2008 and 2.6 in 2009. The relationship between initial T. kanzawai densities and occurrence density of mid-May considering the best spray timing against T. kanzawai was well described by a linear regression, Y = 0.471X + 2.495($R^2$ = 0.95) in 2008, Y = 0.9938X + 3.1858($R^2$ = 0.96) in 2009. Based on the relationship, the number of adults per leaf(ET) in mid-May which can cause 5% loss of yield was estimated to be approximately 3.6 in 2008 and 5.8 in 2009.
This study was conducted to determine the effects of soybean cultivation on yield and other characters in a newly reclaimed soil. Four factois - (1) plant density (2) compost application (3) innoculation of nodule bacteria (Rhizobium japonicum) combined with lime application (4) NPK application-were examined in a 24 factorial experiments arranged in randomized complete block design with 4 replicates. Kangio variety was used and the results obtained are summarized as follows; (1) Dense plant population, Application of Compost and application of fertilizer (NPK) gave the yields 1.7, 1.4 and 2.1 times the check respectively. The Combinations of, dense $population{\times}compost$, dense $compost{\times}fertilizer$ (NPK), $population{\times}compost{\times}fertilizer$ (NPK), and dense $population{\times}compost{\times}nodule$ bacteria with $lime{\times}fertilizer$ (NPK) increased the yields by 2.0, 3.0, 2.6 and 5.4 times than the check respectively. But little effect on yield was noted in the treatment inoculated with nodule bacteria with lime. (2) In the case of higher yield, the increased weight of 100 seeds was found. (3) A markedly increased PH was observed in all of the plots under study after the completion of experiment. (4) The compost treatment and the ferttilizer (NPK) treatment greatly increased the organic matter, total nitrogen and the available phosphorus in the soil. (5) The variation in the grain yield appeared to have a close correlation with the content of available $P_2O_5$ in the soil.

In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial effects of anti-Salmonella gallinarum-specific IgY separated from egg yolk obtained from layers immunized by S. gallinarum. The comparison tests of vaccination, content of IgY and innoculation number were examined by microscopic observation, turbidity, and pH. The results show that the ratio of anti-S. gallinarum IgY in the total IgY was 23%. Also, the anti-S. gallinarum IgY had selectivity only to S, gallinarum. The 0.3% addition of anti-S. gallinarum-specific IgY resulted in agglutinating clusters of S, gallinarum cells, but the agglomeration didn#t occur in IgY from layers not immunized nor in the control group. Microscopic observation indicated agglomerative cells when IgY was added at 0.2% or higher, and the pH and turbidity examinations revealed that a suppression effect was remarkable in IgY at more than 0.1%. These results suggest the possibility that IgY extracted from eggs and obtained from layers immunized by S. gallinarum can be used to prevent fowl typhoid.

The Effects of external resistance on electrical properties such as current density, power density and coulombic efficiency were investigated in two-chamber type MFCs using a ferricyanide as reducing agent. A stable electricity was produced when a constant time elapsed after innoculation of mixed cultures into the anode compartment; voltages from 0.13 to 0.16 V was measured at $50{\Omega}$ of external resistance. When the external resistance was increased, the current density decreased and the power density rapidly increased and then slowly decreased. Big variation of electrical properties was observed in high-current density region due to the concentration loss related with substrate consumption in repeated experiments changing the external resistance. The maximum power density ($175.8mW/m^2$) and coulombic efficiency (46.1%) were obtained at $100{\Omega}$ of the external resistance which is nearest with the internal resistance ($134{\Omega}$) of MFC system.
To shorten the labor cost for the production of the fungus, Paecilomyces tenuipies, uncocooning mutant hybrid silkworms as a host was used. The yield of P. tenuipies was reduced when Nd (uncocooning mutant) was used as a host because Nd was smaller than the hybrid Baegokjam that has been used as a typical host. To increase the host weight, Nd was crossed with Jam l23 or Jam 124, and resulted in not only greater weighter but also higher yield of P. tenuipies. The optimum temperature for rearing Nd hybrid silkworms was $3^{\circ}C$ higher than standard temperature of rearing silkworms to increase the naked pupation rate. The optimum time for the infection of P. tenuipies was 12 h at $28.5^{\circ}C$ and 95% R.H., when $1{\times}10^7spores/ml$ of P. tenuipies were sprayed on the surface of the silkworm. The conditions were applicable to both spring-rearing and autumn-rearing.

We bred a new strain of Pleurotus eryngii having few number of fruit body per bottle. It's name is 'Saegonji' and it was bred by mating monokaryotic strain isolated from E12-176 and monokaryotic strain 'aerini No.3' in Mushroom Research Institute, Gyonggi province A.R.E.S. The characteristics of a new strain 'Saegonji' are as follows. The optimum temperature for mycelium growth was from 23 to $26^{\circ}C$ on PDA medium and those for the primodium formation and the growth of fruit body were about $15^{\circ}C$. The period from spawn innoculation to harvesting required around 51 days at $20^{\circ}C$. The number of fruit body per bottle was 12.8 and it was 9.3 less than 'Keunneutari No.2'. The length was 135.8 mm. It was longer than 'Keunneutari No.2', The color of cap was white grey, while that of 'Keunneutari No.2' was grey. The yield was about 159 g per bottle(1100cc) and it was same as Keunneutari No.2.

This experiment was conducted to find out the effects of mushroom cultivation on ozone susceptibility. The mushroom media in cultivation became softening well without bad Knell when it was soaked for 120 hours. The mushroom media softening on cultivating of oyster mushroom was good and fast when the concentration of gas condition ozone is high. The concentration of gas condition ozone must control at less than 0.02 ppm at the innoculation room, 0.03 ppm at the incubating room, must not use at the sprouting mom, less than 0.02 ppm at the growing room respectively. Also at the growing room, it removes the smell of mushroom, so has a protective effects of coming into mushroom fees and disease. When the concentration of 0.02 ppm liquid condition ozone was sprinkled, it was very useful in disease protection If it was input, the storage period of mushroom fruiting body was prolonged.

In nitrogen-limited conditions, rhizobia lead to formation of nitrogen-fixing nodules on the roots of leguminous plants. The process of nodulation is autoregulated by pre-existing nodules in the same root system. The altered profile of sap proteins by inoculation with B. japonicum may indicate presence of a signal responsible for autoregulation transferred through stem. The 20 kDa protein enhanced by innoculation significantly decreased in intensity from 2.5 to 7 days after inoculation (DAI). However 6 kDa protein did increase during such a transition period. Western blot analysis showed that both 20 kDa and 6 kDa were cross-reacted with the SKTI antiserum. This suggests that SKTI may be involved in soybean nodulation by specific induction and degradation in stem sap during early stage of nodulation. RNAi technique and Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated transformation were applied to investigate the function of SKTI in nodulation. We have found that the number of rhizobium-induced nodule was much less in SKTIi-silenced hairy roots than the non-silenced. Indeed the quantitative RT-PCR showed that the expression level of SKTI gene was reduced over 40% in the transgenic hairy roots compared to the non-transgenic. It appears that the observed early induction of SKTI and degradation into small peptide in a specific time manner may be involved in autoregulation of nodulation in soybean and the specific mechanism of such regulation remains to be investigated.
