  • While the broadband network and multimedia technology are being developed, the commercial market on digital contents as well as IPTV has been widely spreading. Especially IPTV is providing various useful services since it makes using multimedia contents easier and more convenient by combining the strong points of both TV and PC system. Until now, IPTV system has been focused on VoD service as a general usages. However, various IPTV services are recently demanded since they can have special features for some specific places and occasions. So in this paper, we propose a design of the download based IPTV system using user-specific channel management. At first, program contents previously scheduled by users are downloaded and are played at settop-box according to the prescribed time table. This system has some advantages of giving users easy access to any wanted media contents in anytime that is IPTV's characteristics. And we can increase stability of services by using time slot distributed download for contents. Because this service can be constructed and maintained at relatively low cost, we confirm that this service model is more suitable to some companies with small infrastructure and special purposes. Accordingly, in this paper, we look into necessary elements and define some protocols for system in order to help other developer build this system.

  • The development of ocean industries is an existing and important problem for South Korea, which is mostly surrounded by sea and has a long coastline along three seas. It is necessary for researchers to make efforts to enhance its cost and time competitiveness, because many ocean-based activities have been carried out in harsh physical conditions when compared with land-based ones. One of these efforts to improve efficiency is to operate an Offshore Supply Base (OSB), which is a basic infrastructure required to develop ocean industries effectively. For this reason, the construction and operation of OSBs have become an issue in Korea. The relevant research is limited. Nevertheless, there are a few reports published by Korean research institution. They focus on promoting ocean industries and only mention the necessity of OSB as a promotion tool for the industries. This study on the other hand, addresses various issues on the construction of OSBs in Korea and suggests implications for them. To examine the conditions on the construction of OSBs in Korea, we conduct case studies of Houston and Singapore, the representative regions where a massive OSB has been constructed and operated. In addition, we use Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to evaluate the relative priorities of the services provided by OSBs if constructed in Korea.

  • Induced from government policy to boost regional economic competitiveness, regional informatization forming e-community has been the subject included in the various regional informatization master plans in Korea. However, few cases are reported for its successful implementation mainly due to the lack of profitable business model to encourage investment. On the other hand, most efforts to build smart apartments, part of the home networking in a broad sense, has been pursued from the different directions. Telecommunication giant such as Korea Telecom tries to find new source of revenue exploiting enhanced broad band technology. Also, construction companies started constructing housing complexes equipped with built-in high speed network infrastructure as a means to differentiation to other competitors. The contents providing community portal has become mandatory in the sense of bearing the cost from customer side who are willing to adopt those services for new smart house. Our research motivation stems from exploring critical value aspects of realizing the profitability of this emerging new business model, that is, industry convergence model. In this paper, mainly from the survey results of the Korean smart apartment complexes, we reported recent home networking services development in Korea, and value propositions from the business model perspective. Merged business model components of telecommunications, construction, and internet contents are analyzed to provide the insights for future directions.

  • Our country has made every efforts to develop Real Estate Transaction culture with emphasis on Licensed Realtors by introducing Real Estate Transaction Law in 1983. Also, MOLIT(Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport) designated several organizations including KAR(Korea Association of Realtors) as Real Estate Transaction Information Network Licensees for data credibility enhancement and transaction transparency. Nevertheless, the level of law abiding spirit and transaction culture are still similar to those of the old 'Bokdeokbang' era. The under-developed transaction behaviors prevent the social capital of people's credibility on Licensed Realtors from advancing, and results in the outcomes of unnecessary social cost. That is, very low credibility on the data on Sales Items in the market and the fear of speculative real estate price uprise and market distortions are continuing on. In this context, the purpose of this study is to propose the model of GIS-based Modernized Real Estate Transaction System and its execution policies to support credible Real Estate Information to the general public for efficient transactions in the market. Accordingly, the study aims at contributing to the modernization of Real Estate Transactions, fostering competitiveness of Realtors in the Real Estate Market.

  • TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) is a channel access scheme for shared medium networks. The shared frequency is divided into multiple time slots, some of which are assigned to a user for communication. Techniques for TDMA can be categorized into two classes: synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronization is not suitable for small scale networks because it is complicated and requires additional equipments. In contrast, in DESYNC, a biologically-inspired algorithm, the synchronization can be easily achieved without a global clock or other infrastructure overhead. However, DESYNC spends a great deal of time to complete synchronization and does not guarantee the maximum time to synch completion. In this paper, we propose a lightweight synchronization scheme, C-DESYNC, which counts the number of participating nodes with GP (Global Packet) signal including the information about the starting time of a period. The proposed algorithm is mush simpler than the existing synchronization TDMA techniques in terms of cost-effective method and guarantees the maximum time to synch completion. Our simulation results show that C-DESYNC guarantees the completion of the synchronization process within only 3 periods regardless of the number of nodes.

  • Nowadays, dental tourism becomes phenomenon because of its cost-effectiveness, improvement of quality and technology, dental infrastructure, and attractive tourism. Korea as one of popular destination country had established dental system. On the other hand, Indonesia with high number of population is potential market for dental tourism. The aim of this study is to compare the knowledge, attitude, and experience towards dental tourism among Indonesian and Korean. Two cross-sectional descriptive surveys were conducted to collect the data. This study was used one questionnaire in two different languages due to nature of the study population. Data from a total 923 of Indonesian from 33 provinces in Indonesia was collected during the period from April through July 2010. On the other hand, during May until August 2010 data from a total of 312 Korean were obtained. It was found that the majority of participants in both countries had never heard about dental tourism. Among those who had heard about dental tourism, the most common source was internet. Ownership of dental insurance had significant relationship with knowledge of dental tourism among Indonesian while level of education and monthly internet usage had it among Korean (p<0.05). Attitudes of Indonesian and Korean people about dental tourism were negative due to assumption that dental services in their home country were satisfactory. 100% of Korean had no experience on dental treatment in other countries while 2.4% of Indonesian had experience with it. In conclusion, regarding all these evidences, comprehensive and positive information about dental tourism is needed to enhance people's knowledge, attitude, and experience.

  • The US railroad network carries 40% of the nation's total freight. Railroad bridges are the most critical part of the network infrastructure and, therefore, must be properly maintained for the operational safety. Railroad managers inspect bridges by measuring displacements under train crossing events to assess their structural condition and prioritize bridge management and safety decisions accordingly. The displacement of a railroad bridge under train crossings is one parameter of interest to railroad bridge owners, as it quantifies a bridge's ability to perform safely and addresses its serviceability. Railroad bridges with poor track conditions will have amplified displacements under heavy loads due to impacts between the wheels and rail joints. Under these circumstances, vehicle-track-bridge interactions could cause excessive bridge displacements, and hence, unsafe train crossings. If displacements during train crossings could be measured objectively, owners could repair or replace less safe bridges first. However, data on bridge displacements is difficult to collect in the field as a fixed point of reference is required for measurement. Accelerations can be used to estimate dynamic displacements, but to date, the pseudo-static displacements cannot be measured using reference-free sensors. This study proposes a method to estimate total transverse displacements of a railroad bridge under live train loads using acceleration and tilt data at the top of the exterior pile bent of a standard timber trestle, where train derailment due to excessive lateral movement is the main concern. Researchers used real bridge transverse displacement data under train traffic from varying bridge serviceability levels. This study explores the design of a new bridge deck-pier experimental model that simulates the vibrations of railroad bridges under traffic using a shake table for the input of train crossing data collected from the field into a laboratory model of a standard timber railroad pile bent. Reference-free sensors measured both the inclination angle and accelerations of the pile cap. Various readings are used to estimate the total displacements of the bridge using data filtering. The estimated displacements are then compared to the true responses of the model measured with displacement sensors. An average peak error of 10% and a root mean square error average of 5% resulted, concluding that this method can cost-effectively measure the total displacement of railroad bridges without a fixed reference.
