This paper presents the design of block lengths for irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on the maximum variable degree $d_{{\upsilon},max}$. To design a block length, the performance degradation of belief-propagation (BP) decoding performance from upper bounds on the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding performance is used as an important factor. Since for large block lengths, the performance of irregular LDPC codes is very close to the Shannon limit, we focus on moderate block lengths ($5{\times}10^2\;{\leq}\;N\;{\leq}\;4{\times}10^3$). Given degree distributions, the purpose of our paper is to find proper block lengths based on the maximum variable degree $d_{{\upsilon},max}$. We also present some simulation results which show how a block length can be optimized.
ABBA codes, a class of quasi-orthognal space-time block codes (QoSTBC) proposed by Tirkkonen and others, allow full rate and a fast maximum likelihood (ML) decoding, but do not have full diversity. In this paper, a linear complex precoder is proposed for ABBA codes to achieve full rate and full diversity. Moreover, the same diversity produce as that of orthogonal space-time block code with linear complex precoder (OSTBC-LCP) is achieved. Meanwhile, the size of the linear complex precoder can be reduced by half without affecting performance, which means the same complexity of decoding as that of the conventional ABBA code is guaranteed.
As electronic devices technology scales down into the deep-submicron to achieve high-density, low power and high performance integrated circuits, multiple bit upsets by soft errors have become a major threat to on-chip memory systems. To address the soft error problem, single error correction, double error detection and double adjacent error correction (SEC-DED-DAEC) codes have been recently proposed. But these codes do not troubleshoot mis-correction problem. We propose the SEC-DED_DAEC code with without mis-correction. The decoder for proposed code is implemented as hardware and verified. The results show that there is no mis-correction in the proposed codes and the decoder can be employed on-chip memory system.
As shrinking the semiconductor process into the deep sub-micron to achieve high-density, low power and high performance integrated circuits, MBU (multiple bit upset) by soft errors is one of the major challenge of on-chip memory systems. To address the MBU, single error correction, double error detection and double adjacent error correction (SEC-DED-DAEC) codes have been recently proposed. But these codes do not resolve mis-correction. We propose the SEC-DED-DAEC-TAED(triple adjacent error detection) code without mis-corrections. The generated H-matrix by the proposed heuristic algorithm to accomplish the proposed code is implemented as hardware and verified. The results show that there is no mis-correction in the proposed codes and the 2-stage pipelined decoder can be employed on-chip memory system.

We demonstrate rotationally invariant space-time (ST) trellis codes with a 4-D rectangular signal constellation for data transmission over fading channels using two transmit antennas. The rotational invariance is a good property to have that may alleviate the task of the carrier phase tracking circuit in the receiver. The transmitted data stream is segmented into eight bit blocks and quadrature amplitude modulated using a 256 point 4-D signal constellation whose 2-D constituent constellation is a 16 point square constellation doubly partitioned. The 4-D signal constellation is simply the Cartesian product of the 2-D signal constellation with it-self and has 32 subsets. The partition is performed on one side into four subsets A, B, C, and D with increased minimum-squared Euclidian distance, and on the other side into four rings, where each ring includes four points of equal energy. We propose both linear and nonlinear ST trellis codes and perform simulations using an appropriate multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model. The 4-D ST codes constructed here demonstrate about the same frame error rate (FER) performance as their 2-D counterparts, having however the added value of rotational invariance.

Conventional multilayer feedforward artificial neural networks are very effective in dealing with spatial problems. To deal with problems with time dependency, some kinds of memory have to be built in the processing algorithm. In this paper we show how the newly proposed Serial Input Neuron (SIN) convolutional decoders can be derived. As an example, we derive the SIN decoder for rate code with constraint length 3. The SIN is tested in Gaussian channel and the results are compared to the results of the optimal Viterbi decoder. A SIN approach to decode convolutional codes is presented. No supervision is required. The decoder lends itself to pleasing implementations in hardware and processing codes with high speed in a time. However, the speed of the current circuits may set limits to the codes used. With increasing speeds of the circuits in the future, the proposed technique may become a tempting choice for decoding convolutional coding with long constraint lengths.

Jacket matrices, motivated by the complex Hadamard matrix, have played important roles in signal processing, communications, image compression, cryptography, etc. In this paper, we suggest a novel approach to design a simple class of space-time block codes (STBCs) to reduce its peak-to-average power ratio. The proposed code provides coding gain due to the characteristics of the complex Hadamard matrix, which is a special case of Jacket matrices. Also, it can achieve full rate and full diversity with the simple decoding. Simulations show the good performance of the proposed codes in terms of symbol error rate. For generality, a kind of quasi-orthogonal STBC may be similarly designed with the improved performance.
In this paper, a new decoding scheme is proposed to improve the error correcting performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region by using post-processing. It behaves as follows: First, a conventional LDPC decoding is applied to received LDPC codewords one by one. Then, we count the number of word errors in a predetermined number of decoded codewords. If there is no word error, nothing needs to be done and we can move to the next group of codewords with no delay. Otherwise, we perform a proper post-processing which produces a new soft-valued codeword (this will be fully explained in the main body of this paper) and then apply the conventional LDPC decoding to it again to recover the unsuccessfully decoded codewords. For the proposed decoding scheme, we adopt a simple product code structure which contains LDPC codes and simple algebraic codes as its horizontal and vertical codes, respectively. The decoding capability of the proposed decoding scheme is defined and analyzed using the parity-check matrices of vertical codes and, especially, the combined-decodability is derived for the case of single parity-check (SPC) codes and Hamming codes used as vertical codes. It is also shown that the proposed decoding scheme achieves much better error correcting capability in high SNR region with little additional decoding complexity, compared with the conventional LDPC decoding scheme.

Formation flying is an important technology that enables high cost-effective organization of outer space aircrafts. The ad-hoc wireless network based on direct-sequence ultra-wideband (DS-UWB) techniques is seen as an effective means of establishing wireless communication links between aircrafts. In this paper, based on the theory of matched filter and error bits correction, a hybrid detection algorithm is proposed for realizing multiuser detection (MUD) when the DS-UWB technique is used in the ad-hoc wireless network. The matched filter is used to generate a candidate code set which may contain several error bits. The error bits are then recognized and corrected by an novel error-bit corrector, which consists of two steps: code mapping and clustering. In the former step, based on the modified optimum MUD decision function, a novel mapping function is presented that maps the output candidate codes into a feature space for differentiating the right and wrong codes. In the latter step, the codes are clustered into the right and wrong sets by using the K-means clustering approach. Additionally, in order to prevent some right codes being wrongly classified, a sign judgment method is proposed that reduces the bit error rate (BER) of the system. Compared with the traditional detection approaches, e.g., matched filter, minimum mean square error (MMSE) and decorrelation receiver (DEC), the proposed algorithm can considerably improve the BER performance of the system because of its high probability of recognizing wrong codes. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can almost achieve the BER performance of the optimum MUD (OMD). Furthermore, compared with OMD, the proposed algorithm has lower computational complexity, and its BER performance is less sensitive to the number of users.
