  • In this research, I tried to make a comparative study of ideological characteristics of Industrial Relations between Korea and U.K., based on the presupposition that ideologies of Industrial Relations' Actors played an important role in Industrial Relations. U.K. have a voluntary and pluralistic ideological tradition of Industrial Relations, therefore U.K. is very rational to adjust and integrate different ideologies of actors. Meanwhile Korea have unrealistic, exclusive and rigid ideologies, therefore these have played a important role in worsening labor-management conflicts. For example strikes frequencies and workers involved in strikes are relatively few, but Workdays Lost due to strikes are very severe because of long strike durations, compared to U.K. Consequently national economic loss due to strikes has been severe. Korea trade unions are various and poor, but at the same time not mutual understanding in ideologies. Therefore from the viewpoint that strength in U.K.'s Industrial Relations stands on the power of adjusting different ideologies, we have to diminish the disparities between ideologies and realities of Industrial Relations through public discussion.

  • Automobile manufacturing companies should provide the products and service that can satisfy consumers who usually want various kinds of automobiles. This paper studied the relations among several demographic characteristics(gender, age, occupation, income) of consumers and automobile's attributes(engine performance, engine displacement, price, maintenance expenses, color, etc.) and preferred automobile(kind, size, company, price). For the relation research we established a model and related hypotheses and used a questionnaire survey, where 350 subjects were questioned. After the analysis, many statistically significant results are obtained : consumer's gender has relations with the preference for engine performance, engine displacement, price, color, and design; age has relations with the preference for engine displacement, maintenance expenses, free checking during A/S period, etc., occupation has relations with the preference for engine performance, engine displacement, price, maintenance expenses, fuel efficiency, etc. : income has relations with the preference for engine performance, engine displacement, price, maintenance expenses, mileage, reputation of car manufacturing companies, etc.; price and fuel efficiency has relations with the preference for car manufacturing companies. These results suggest the consumer-oriented sales of automobiles and are expected to be helpful for the effective strategy development of automobile marketing.

  • Despite surging interests in analyzing business processes, there are few scientific approaches to analysis and redesign of organizational structures which can greatly affect the performance of business processes. This paper presents a method for deriving and analyzing organizational relations from process models using social network analysis techniques. Process models contain information on who performs which processes and activities, along with the assignment of organizational units such as departments and roles to related activities. To derive social relations between organizational units from process models, three types of metrics are formally defined: transfer of work metrics, subcontracting metrics, and cooperation metrics. By applying these metrics, various relations among organizational units can be derived and analyzed. To verify the proposed method and metrics, they are applied to standard process models of the semiconductor and electronic, and automotive industry in Korea. This paper presents a taxonomy for diagnosing organization structure based on the presented approach. The paper also discusses how to combine analyses in the taxonomy for redesign of organizational structures.

  • This study examines how the difference in trade openness across manufacturing industries in Korea affects firm's employment strategies and industrial relations, utilizing the Korean establishment panel data. In terms of firm's employment strategy, it is found that trade openness is not associated with a particular employment strategy such as labor cost saving strategy or innovation strategy. This result is consistent with the previous findings that trade liberalization merely affects wages and employment. Moreover, this result disproves, at least for the Korean manufacturing, a general belief that when the domestic market is opened to foreign competition, firms will adopt and rely on labor cost saving strategy intensely. The obtained result concerning the relationship between trade openness and industrial relations is more interesting and informative. It is found that trade openness is positively associated with cooperative industrial relations. Furthermore, the positive relationship is reenforced when the establishment is unionized. This implies that management and union cooperate when they are faced with increased foreign competition as a result of trade liberalization.

  • In rough set literatures, methods for inducing minimal rules from a given decision table have been proposed. When the decision attribute is ordinal, inducing rules about upward and downward unions of decision classes is advantageous in the simplicity of obtained rules. However, because of independent applications of the rule induction method, inclusion relations among upward/downward unions in conclusion parts are not inherited to the condition parts of obtained rules. This non-inheritance may debase the quality of obtained rules. To ensure that inclusion relations among conclusions are inherited to conditions, we propose two rule induction approaches. The performances of the proposed approaches considering the inclusion relations between conclusions are examined by numerical experiments.
