Thirty cases were observed among the peripheral facial paralysis patients who admitted. the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion of Seoul Oriental Hospital between Feb. 2nd, 1995 and Aug. 14th, 2000. These patients were divided into two groups; the first group was treated with indirect facial moxibustion., while the second with basic oriental-westem medicine treatment. Object : To improve the therapeutic rate of peripheral facial paralysis by applying basic oriental-western medicine treatment and indirect facial moxibustion. Method : Inpatients suffering from peripheral paralysis of facial nerve were divided into two groups; both groups recieved basic oriental-western medicine treatment; the experimental group additionally received indirect facial moxibustion onto Tuyu(頭維) and Chich'ang(地倉) once or twice daily. Result : In the therapeutic result from moxibustion treatment group, 3 excellent, 7 good, 3 fair, and 1 poor case were observed. From compound treatment group, 2 excellent, 5 good, 5 fair and 4 poor cases were observed. Among the excellent and good patients of both groups, therapeutic rate of moxibustion treatment group (71.4%) was higher than that of compound treatment group(43.8%). Conclusion : The overall therapeuric rate of the moxibustion treatment group was 92.8%, which was higher than that of the compound treatment group(75.1%).
We implemented the Drug-Pad Moxibustion Method in order to improve the conventional moxibustion therapy. This method is aimed to eliminate burning wounds and smoke, which are the defects of conventional moxibustion therapy. And we performed to verify the efficiency by comparing the Drug-Pad Moxibustion Method with the conventional Indirect Moxibustion Therapy. We measured the body heat and the lasting time of blood circulation improvement using thermography. The moxibustion therapy has two kinds of effects: The formers are pharmacological effects of the Moxa's vasodilators and antioxidants. The latters are thermal effects which cause improvement of the blood circulation. To remove the demerits without omission of above therapeutic effects, we extracted the vasodilators and antioxidant compounds from the Moxa-$CH_2Cl_2$ fraction Moxa-EtOAc and composed the moxibustion kit with $(Ba_{0.8}\;Sr_{0.2})_{0.996}\;Y_{0.004}\;TiO_2+0.5_{WT}\;SiO_2%$ Positive Temperature Coefficients Thermistor. The experimental demonstrations have been made by the stimulating the spot which is CV4(Kwan-Won), CV8(Shin-Guel), CV12(Jung-Wan) acupuncture points of the conception vessel meridian(CV). And stimulating time was one hour. We divided the subjects into 5 groups such as no stimulation group, conventional Indirect Moxibustion group, only Drug-Pad stimulation group, only heat stimulation group, and Drug-Pad Moxibustion group. In the different cases, we have measured the body heat in pre-stimulation, just after stimulation, 2 hours after, and 4 hours after. The body heats of the group who were stimulated by the Drug-Pad Moxibustion Method were increased by over the $2^{\circ}C$. And the body heats of the group who were stimulated by the Indirect Moxibustion Method were increased by average the $1^{\circ}C$. We have evaluated that the Drug-Pad Moxibustion Method is improvement on the conventional Indirect Moxibustion Method by the heat-increasing rate is 200% and the lasting time is 150% with the body heat of the abdominal region. In the conclusions, We have implemented the Drug-Pad Moxibustion Method and evaluated the efficiency of the Drug-Pad Moxibustion Method comparing with the conventional Indirect Moxibustion Method.
Objectives: To describe a clinical case of a patient with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) who was cured using indirect moxibustion. Methods: A male patient with severe CFS was treated with mainly indirect moxibustion (KI1, CV4 and CV8). The clinical outcome was observed by self-reporting, both visual analogue scale (VAS) and numerical rating scale (NRS). Results: The patient's symptoms matched the criteria for CFS diagnosis. His symptom differentiation was the "Yang deficiency of spleen and kidney". The fatigue feeling and related-symptoms were radically reduced by 14-day treatment. The VAS and NRS score changed from 8.5 and 70 to 3.5 and 35, respectively. Conclusions: This case report provides information on the potential of moxibustion therapy and its application for CFS and fatigue-associated disorders.
Objective : This study is designed to find out the effects of indirect moxibustion at Geogol (LI16) on the shoulder pain. Methods : The patients were hospitalized Donghwa oriental medical clinic from 19th Sep. 2006 to 4th Oct. 2006, and treated with indirect moxibution at Geogol (LI16) on the shoulder pain. Results : 1. The effects of treatment by duration was follow : Below 1 month duration was improved highly. 2. The effects of treatment by condition of patients was follow : After treatment, the percentage of above "Good" level was 81%. 3. The effects of treatment by pain region of Meridian part. was follow : pain region of LI(手陽明大腸經) Meridian part was improved highly. Conclusion : According to the results, indirect moxibustion at Geogol (LI16) may be good effects on the shoulder pain.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effect of indirect moxibustion treatment for HIVD patients. Methods : From March 2010 to December 2010, 32 HIVD patients who admitted to Semyung oriental medical hospital were divided into two groups. Group I was treated by indirect moxibustion and general acupuncture, group II by general acupuncture. We evaluated the treatment effect of each group with the visual analog scale(VAS) and Oswestry disability index(ODI) by dividing three period(from admission day to third day after admission, from third day to sixth day after admission and from sixth day to ninth day after admission). Results : 1. Group I was more effective than group II in VAS score reducing rate at sixth day after admission and ninth day after admission but there was no statistical significance between two groups at third day after admission 2. Group I was more effective than group II in VAS improvement rate from third day to sixth day after admission but there was no statistical significance between two groups from admission day to third day after admission and sixth day to ninth day after admission. 3. Group I was more effective than group II in ODI score reducing rate at sixth day after admission and ninth day after admission but there was no statistical significance between two groups at third day after admission. 4. In ODI improvement rate group I was higher than group II, but there was no statistical significance. Conclusions : Through this research, Indirect moxibustion treatment is considered to be effective reducing pain for HIVD(Herniated intervertebral disc) patients.
Objectives : Burn is the important adverse effect of the moxibustion treatment. This research does with the purpose to utilize as basic data which the results of histological observation of the burn tissue which generates when operating various commercial indirect moxa (CIM) on the skin, evaluate the burn because of the surgical operation. Methods : It operated 6 kinds of CIM on the depilated abdomen of the rat. By using the H-E staining and TUNEL assay, the image was observed and analyzed. Results : It could be the moxibustion medical treatment using the CIM generated in the first degree burn until the third degree. And in some case, burn has not generated. By using the H-E stain, the second-degree burn and third degree was observed, and it was observed the first degree burn by using TUNEL assay. In the first degree burn, TUNEL reaction in the epidermal layer was confirmed. The damage to the dermal layer was observed in more than 2 degree burn. In the third degree, the tissue degeneration to the subcutaneous fat was observed but the thickness of the skin tissue was not observed. Conclusions : Basic data classifying the burn generated by the CIM treatment through the histological observation of the burn tissue caused by the CIM treatment were built according to this research result.
Objectives This paper focused on developing the acupuncture-moxibustion device for head. Disadvantages of the existing devices for head moxibustion are its hume and inconvenience in operating because of the hair. Methods The proposed acupuncture-moxibustion device for GV20(Baihui) is 10mm long as needle body and 6mm long as needle root whose feature are 1~2 turns spiral coil. The spiral coil contains the moxa in order not to drop the moxa while operating Results The direct temperature on the burning moxa were measured by TK-305 infrared thermometer. But the direct temperature on the needle of acupuncture-moxibustion device were not able to measure by TK-305 infrared thermometer. By definition equation, the indirect temperatures on the needle of acupuncture-moxibustion device were able to be calculated. Conclusion A very safe, small and cheap acupuncture-moxibustion device for GV20(Baihui) of head is proposed. It will be useful to generate the heat shock protein and to operate in preventing and curing the Alzheimer's disease.
Objectives : The moxibustion is the method in using the heat stimulation made of attached and burned a moxa or other herbal materials on a healing point or acupuncture point and the chemical stimulation of a resin made from burning them. We need to standardize the characteristics of moxa combustion in order to get more systematic and objective result in operation mechanism and effects and then get more clinical abilities in these fields. Methods : In this study, using of labview system on the moxibustion. 1. we studied relation the size of barley and jujube seed with the moxa cone's peak combustion temperature and then measured and compared the moxa cone's peak combustion temperature by tonification and sedation method. 2. we measured the peak combustion temperature of indirect moxibustion. Results & comclusions : 1. When we measured a direct moxibustion's combustion temperature, the jujube seed sized moxa cone's peak temperature was higher than the barley sized moxa cone's when it burned and the time to peak temperature of the barley sized moxa cone was shorter than the jujube seed sized moxa cone's. 2. When the direct moxibustion was burned by the tonification and sedation method, the sedation method's peak temperature was higher than the tonification method's, the tonification's time to peak temperature was shorter than the sedation method's. 3. When we measured the temperature of the moxa combustion in the kinds of sliced herbal materials, the peak temperature of indirect moxibustion with a ginger when it sliced a 1.3mm size and a 1.5mm size was degreed within $40^{\circ}C$ to $52^{\circ}C$ and the peak temperature of indirect moxibustion with a garlic when it sliced a 1.7mm size was degreed within $46^{\circ}C$ to $62^{\circ}C$.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to compare with the effect of acupuncture treatment with or without indirect moxibustion treatment for acute ankle sprain. Methods : This study was carried out on the 48 patients who had been treated for acute ankle sprain from June 1st to November 30th 2009 in the Dept. of Oriental Rehabilitation, Pohang Oriental Medical Hospital, Daegu Hanny University. The patients were divided into 3 groups ; Group A took near acupuncture point_needling, Group B took remote acupuncture point needling, Group C took remote acupuncture point needling with indirect moxibustion. 3 Groups had been co-treated with rest, ice, compression and elevation(RICE) therapy, physical treatment and administered Ojeok-san(Wuji-san) extract granule. To evaluating the efficiency of each treatment, Ankle-Hindfoot Scale(AHS) and Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) were applied before treatment and after 3rd treatment. Results : In results, the AHS scores were increased and the VAS scores were decreased after 3rd treatment in all group. Also, AHS scores and the VAS scores of intergroup were showed no significant change. Conclusions : In this study, there is no significant effect between only acupuncture treatment and moxibustion co-treatment for acute ankle sprain.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanism and effect of moxibustion with salt objectively, to be used as the quantitative data through the measurement of temperature, and to grasp the thermodynamic characteristics of moxibustion with salt. Methods: We have selected of the moxibustion with salt of indirect moxibustion. We make a comparative study of the thermodynamic characteristics of moxibustion with salt as a kind of the 4 salt. We examined combustion times, temperatures, temperature gradients in each period during a combustion of moxa. Results: 1. We make out that it is not significantly change the time of thermal conduction of moxibustion with salt as a kind of 4 salt. 2. The heating period of Refined Salt was long and that of Sun-dried Salt was a short time respectively. The heating period of maximum tamperature is high Sun-dried Salt, Mechanical Salt and Refined Salt orderly. Maximun heating speed in the heating period was $0.151{\sim}0.184^{\circ}C/sec$ and at the same tendency of the maximum temperature in the heating period. 3. The retaining period was shorter than the heating period respectively, that is 15~24% of the combustion time of in the heating period. We make out that it is not significantly different the time of the retaining period as a kind of 4 salt. The mean temperature of retaining period was $43.2{\sim}48.1^{\circ}C$, that was extraordinarily high temperature. 4. We make out that it is not significantly different the time of the cooling period as a kind of 4 salt. The cooling period was measured 223~233sec. Beacuse the same density and size of moxa combustion was made an experiment. 5. The effective combustion time of Refined Salt is longer(259sec) than that of Sun-dried Salt(173sec). It is significantly different the time of the combustion time as a kind of 4 salt. 6. It is significantly different the Sample deviation of the combustion time as a kind of 4 salt because of the water content of the 4 salt individually. Conclusions: As the base on this study, we obtained the conclusion as the follows. The salt of moxibustion with salt was fitted for Sun-dried Salt due to making to Mechanical Salt recently. The Refined Salt is composition rate to another and small size comparatively. So It was fitted for the salt of moxibustion with salt. It is necessary to study continuously about the more suitable moxibustion with salt and quantitative analysis about the moxibustion with salt.
