  • In VEs (virtual environments) such as a CAVE system, there are three important operations : executive command decision, object selection and 3-D (three-dimensional) pointing. It is necessary to implement these operations in VEs intuitively and accessibly. In CAVE, it is possible for examines to walk and change their viewpoints freely. Then, the input devices which have excellent portability and rich expression are desired. Speech input satisfies both requirements. It is, however, very difficult for the speech input to indicate an exact point in 3-D space. Therefore, an extendable virtual stick is employed and it supports speech input. This paper proposes a user friendly interface using speech and a virtual stick in CAVE system. In this paper, several applications appropriate for the proposed interface are developed. Some problems are pointed out from the applications.

  • In dies manufacturing industry, quality, cost, and production leadtime are very important. In this study, we describe the current status and characteristics of dies industry in Korea. AS a case study, we introduce a CIM system implemented in a leading dies manufacturer and describe its components and functions. Subsequently, we analyze the effectiveness of the CIM system by using the real data between 1987 and 1992 from the company. It is indicated that the most significant impact of CIM is the reduced cost, followed by increased sales, reduced leadtime, and improved quality of dies. All these four variables show positive correlations with one another. However, the data indicate that the number of employees are not directly related with other variables : probably because additional personnel are required for operating new technology such as CAD/CAM and information network.

  • This paper is concerned with scheduling in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) using a Fuzzy Logic (FL) approach. Four fuzzy input variables: machine allocated processing time, machine priority, machine available time and transportation priority are defined. The job priority is the output fuzzy variable, showing the priority status of a job to be selected for the next operation on a machine. The model will first select the machines and then assign operations based on a multi-criteria scheduling scheme. System/machine utilization, minimizing mean flow time and balancing machine usage will be covered. Experimental and comparative tests indicate the superiority of this fuzzy based scheduling model over the existing approaches.

  • Uncertainty components and evaluation of the system of pressure measurement are presented in this paper. Since early in 1980s, measurement uncertainty is getting more important due to ISO/IEC 17025, which is established for international test and calibration laboratories. Up to now it is true that accuracy, precision, error and etc. have been commonly used in industry to define the amount of error to the products and equipment, but these terms ought to be united into uncertainity in the future. This paper describes how to indicate measurement uncertainty and types of measurement errors, and then shows the evaluation result of measurement system using piezoelectric pressure transducers.

  • As the size and complexity of network increase, Distributed Systems Management (DSM) will be significant issue within information network in order to increase the high reliability and to improve the flexibility of network management. The OSI management model has several problems. The key problems are that it does not fully address the problems of how to develop communication protocol in support of DSM, and how to classify the management connection criteria. In this paper, to solve first problem described above, this paper propose the connectionless CMIP(Common Management Information Protocol) to accomplish for effectively managing the distributed management system, and indicate its efficiency; this protocol is available to negotiate among the managing systems, handle the dynamic information. To work out second problem, we introduce the connection criteria in the hierarchy of management systems, and finally evaluate the efficiency of a suggested protocol during cooperative negotiation among the managing systems.

  • In this paper, a noncontact type torque meter using silicone rubber to measure the exact torque value and reduce a vibration and a noise, was developed. When planetary gear speed reducer runs, torque, RPM etc.. of motor change according to load or speed change. So, it needs a device to detect load's change or to diagnose the state of thewhole drive department by monitoring these result values. The noncontact type torque meter using silicone rubber that we're trying to develop this time is low-cost and can measure RPM and torque value simply. Also, it caculate a power using this value and indicate them on screen.

  • Here, the rapid detection of Salmonella typhimurium by a portable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor in which the beam from a diode laser is modulated by a rotating mirror is reported. Using this system, immunoassay based on lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-specific monoclonal anti-Salmonella antibody was performed. For the purpose of orientation-controlled immobilization of antibodies on the SPR chip surface, the cysteine-mediated immobilization method, which is based on interaction between a gold surface and a thiol group (-SH) of cysteine, was adopted. As a result, using the portable SPR-based immunoassay, we detected S. typhimurium in the range from 10^7 CFU/mL to 10^9 CFU/mL within 1 hour. The results indicate that the portable SPR system could be potentially applied for general laboratory detection as well as on-site monitoring of foodborne, clinical, and environmental agents of interest.

  • In this paper, we provide the results of polishing temperature distribution by way of infrared ray measurement system as well as polishing resistance, which can be interpreted as tribological aspects of CMP, using force measurement system. The results include the trend of polishing temperature, its distribution profile and temperature change during polishing. The results indicate that temperature affects greatly to the removal rate. Polishing temperature increases gradually and reaches steady state temperature and the period of temperature change occurs first tens of seconds. Furthermore, the friction force also varies as the same pattern with polishing temperature from high friction to low. These results suggest that the first period of the whole polishing time greatly affects the nonuniformity of removal rate.

  • This paper deals with disparities in course evaluation between general and major courses of mathematics education. We provide concrete evidences which verify the mismanagement of the evaluation system and can be an impetus to a more rational one. We indicate the direction to which professors of mathematics education should head. Also those statistics obtained from the author's teaching of mathematics education and related subjects for twelve years are provided for the fact-finding of and improving the erroneous evaluation system.

  • The purpose of this paper is that investigates the dynamic behavior characteristic of W.T.S(Wind Turbine System) and carries out the evaluation analysis during operating W.T.S. To investigate the dynamic behavior characteristic of W.T.S. the experiments to measure vibration of the blade from the attached accelerometer on the flap and edge section of the blade that is one of the most important elements of dynamic characteristic of W.T.S are performed. Natural frequency and mode shape are calculated with commercial program (STAR MODAL) using the measured vibration acceleration that receives the signal with F.F.T Analyzer from the accelerometer. For validation of these experiments. the finite element analysis is performed with commercial F.E.M Program (ANSYS) on the basis of the natural frequency and mode shape. The results indicate that experimental values have good agreements with the finite element analysis.
