The complex refractive index of Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) thin films, which can be applied to optical devices or electrical devices, have been determined using optical methods. DLC thin films are grown on Si(100) substrates and vitreous silica substrates respectively, using the technique of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). The spectroscopic ellipsometry data($\psi$, $\Delta$) and the transmission spectra of these DLC films are obtained. These optical spectra are analyzed with the help of the Sellmeier dipersion relation and a quantum mechanically derived dispersion relation. Using spectroscopic ellipsometry data at their transparent region, the refractive index and the effective thickness of DLC films on vitreous silica are model calculated, Then the transmission spectra are inverted to yield the extinction coefficient spectra k(λ) at absorbing region. These spectra are fit to the quantum mechanical dispersion relation and the best fit dispersion constants are determined. The complex refractive indices are easily calculated with these constants. The spectroscopic ellipsometry data at the absorbing region in model calculated to give the packing densities and the degrees of surface microroughness of DLC films. Discussions are made in correlation with the growth condition of DLC films.
We determined the optical constants of organic light emitting material of Alq$_3$ in a spectral range between 1.5 and 6 eV using the physical model introduced by Forouhi and Bloomer[Phys. Rev. B 34, pp. 7018-7026, 1986.]. The initial parameters of $A_i,\;B_i,\;C_i$ of Forouhi-Bloomer dispersion relations were determined from the absorption peaks and widths of absorption spectra of the Alq$_3$ film. The refractive index of substrate, a fused silica, is derived from the Sellmeier equation with the measured transmittance and reflectance spectra. Then, the complex refractive index and thickness of the Alq$_3$ film were calculated by use of a nonlinear least square fitting program with the Forouhi-Bloomer dispersion relation and the measured transmittance and reflectance spectra.
In this paper we have investigated the guiding properties of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with a square-lattice of air-holes in the cladding. We have shown numerical results of PCFs with various air hole sizes and hole-to-hole spacings over a wide wavelength range. The group velocity dispersion, effective area and effective refractive index of PCF have been calculated numerically. The waveguide dispersion has greatly affected the group velocity dispersion when hole-to-hole spacing is about $1{\mu}m$. The effective area is quite flat over the wide spectral range whether the hole-to-hole spacing is large or ratio of diameter to pitch is large. From the field distribution, we found that the field is tightly confined within the core region of PCF when the pitch is $3{\mu}m$ and the air-filling fraction is 0.9.
The four different vinyl monomers in the reaction of isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer were used for the preparation of macromonomers and successfully employed in the dispersion polymerization of styrene. The chemical structures of vinyl monomer in macromonomers influenced on the polystyrene particle characteristics, such as the conversion, weight average molecular weights ($M_w$), polydispersity index (PDI), weight average diameter ($D_w$), and uniformity. The conversion of polystyrene increased with amounts of methyl group in vinyl monomer. Also the uniformity of polystyrene particles increased with amounts of methyl group in vinyl monomer.

According to the returns of Housing and business cycle over the period 1992 to 2007, it is a measure of the total volatility faced by investors in Housing properties. First, it isn't a distinct difference from business cycle contrary to U.S. Second, the rise of purchase price in total apartments moves up the consumer price index. According to the cross-sectional dispersion of returns and growth in net operating income (NOI) of apartments, industrial, retail and office properties using panel data for U.S. metropolitan areas over the period 1986 to 2002, it is a measure of the total volatility faced by investors in commercial real estate. To the extent that most of that volatility is difficult to diversify, cross-sectional dispersion may be an appropriate measure of risk.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations using the B3LYP hybrid functional and the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set have been performed to predict the wavelength dispersion of optical absorbance and refractive indices for organic compounds and polymers in the range between the vacuum UV (${\sim}157\;nm$) and near-IR (${\sim}850\;nm$). The DFT calculations can reproduce the experimental dispersions of absorbance and refractive indices with high accuracy and low costs. The calculated dispersions demonstrate that the judicious introductions of $-F\;and\;-CF_{3}$ into alicyclic and heterocyclic compounds are effective in reducing the absorption at shorter wavelengths. In addition, the calculated Abbe numbers that represent the refractive index dispersion in the visble region are linearly proportional to the calculated refractive indices at 589 nm.
The polarization mode dispersion (PMD) that restricts the transmission bandwidth was investigated in standard long single mode fiber which optimized at 1.3${\mu}m$. Although fiber has perfect circular symmetry, each optical fiber has different refractive index profiles. The investigation of PMD with random mode couplings were conducted in three kinds of fiber by the time-domain interferometric method. By using two manufacturing methods, MCVD(Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition) method and VAD(Vapor Phase Axial Deposition) method, the property of mechanical asymmetric lateral pressure, bending and twisting induced polarization mode dispersion were measured. The concatenated optical fibers were compared with other types.
Magnesium hydroxide as a non-halogen flame retardant has increasing attention due to its non-toxicity, high decomposition temperature and smoke suppressant ability during combustion. For the application of magnesium hydroxide retardant to the textile by soaking and coating method, the prerequisite for the coating is a small particle size, stable dispersion, and adhesion to the textile. The dispersion of $Mg(OH)_2$ particles and stability of the coating was checked by monitoring the change of transmittance and backscattering by varying the types of dispersion agents, binder, solvent, and $Mg(OH)_2$ source, and their compositions in the coating. The $Mg(OH)_2$ dispersion coating was applied to PET(poly(ethylene terephthalate)) non-woven textile. The physical properties are characterized by surface morphology, amount of coating, particle dispersion, and adhesion test. The flame retardant $Mg(OH)_2$ coated textile has been compared by limited oxygen index(LOI) and thermal gravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry(TG-DSC). It was found that phosphorous additive may give synergistic effect on $Mg(OH)_2$ flame retardant coating to make the flame retardant PET non-woven textile.
In the auto-guiding system for obtaining a long exposure astrophotography, CCD camera is usually used for measuring guide errors which are affected by optical dispersion and mechanical disturbances. In this paper, a discrete time dynamic model and a performance index are proposed for analysing the auto-guiding system. The optimal gain for proportional control is derived considering the optical dispersion and the disturbances. Some experiments are provided to illustrate that the optimal control gain is lower as the optical dispersion is higher.
Since the forest succession is changing process in the structure and function of a forest for the long period of time, the objectivity of the process could be improved through the development of model or statistical methodology. This study was carried out to estimate succession index based on climax index and species composition parameters, thereupon to compare the succession index with life form and species diversity so as to grasp the information of quantitative successional process for the six community types in the natural deciduous forest of Mt. Jumbong area. The results indicated that Quercus mongolica-Tilia amurensis community had the greatest succession index of 67.5, followed by Abies holophylla-Fraxinus mandshurica community with 67.4. Juglans mandshurica-Cornus controversa community was recorded the smallest value of 60.5. The succession index of overstory tended to increase considerably at the stage of steady state for all community types except Quercus mongolica-Tilia amurensis community. However, The index of midstory hardly varied as the forest succession would progress for all community types. The succession index was negatively correlated to wind-water dispersion type of life form and positively to animal dispersion type at the 5% probability level. On the other hand, the index was not significantly correlated to the species richness and Shannon's species diversity index.
