  • This paper proposes a frequency domain independent component analysis (ICA) algorithm to separate the mixed speech signals using a multiple microphone array By estimating the delay timings using a input cross-correlation, even in the delayed mixture case, we propose a good initial value setting method which leads to optimal convergence. To reduce the calculation, separation process is performed at frequency domain. The results of simulations confirms the better performances of the proposed algorithm.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify nurses' self-leadership, organizational commitment and their nursing performance, and examine the relationship among them. Method: A total of 330 clinical nurses with more than one year nursing experiences were recruited from 10 hospitals in G city and J province in Korea. Data were collected using questionnaires from March, 12 to April 21, 2007. For data analyzed using SPSS 12.0 for windows program, Results: There were significant positive correlations between self-leadership, organizational commitment, and independent, dependent, and interpersonal nursing performances. In addition, the organizational commitment had significant positive correlations with independent, dependent, and interpersonal nursing performances. Conclusion: These findings suggest that nurses' organizational commitment and nursing performance ability will be enhanced by hospitals' active supports such as empowering individual nurses' self-leadership through enlarging their autonomy and strengthening their ability to control themselves.

  • This study deals with the accident of roundabout. The objective is to analyze the traffic accidents occurred in 3-legged and 4-legged roundabouts through the developed models. In developing the multiple linear regression models, this study uses the number of traffic accidents as a dependent variable and such the variables as geometric structures, traffic characters and others as the independent variables. The correlation and multicollinearity of variables were analyzed using SPSS17.0. The main results are as follows. First, R-square value of developed models were analyzed to be 0.851(3-leg) and 0.689(4-leg), respectively. Second, the independent variables in the 3-legged roundabout accident model were analyzed to be the traffic volume and number of crosswalk, and the variables in the 4-legged roundabouts were evaluated to be the traffic volume and signal. Finally, the paired t-test shows that the predicted values and observed values are not statistically different.

  • The information-theoretic approach to face recognition is based on the compact coding where face images are decomposed into a small set of basis images. Most popular method for the compact coding may be the principal component analysis (PCA) which eigenface methods are based on. PCA based methods exploit only second-order statistical structure of the data, so higher- order statistical dependencies among pixels are not considered. Independent component analysis (ICA) is a signal processing technique whose goal is to express a set of random variables as linear combinations of statistically independent component variables. ICA exploits high-order statistical structure of the data that contains important information. In this paper we employ the ICA for the efficient feature extraction from face images and show that ICA outperforms the PCA in the task of face recognition. Experimental results using a simple nearest classifier and multi layer perceptron (MLP) are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

  • Type A LPG Carrier is the ship using the low temperature independent cargo tank separate from the hull, which has various support structures for laying independent tanks on the hull. In this paper, the direct strength analysis for the support structures has been performed through the direct load analysis, load transfer, stress analysis and strength assessment. Also, a rational modeling method of support structures has been proposed to obtain the dynamic load between the hull and the separate tank.

  • Purpose: The Purpose of this study was to analyze factors influencing the dependence of the elderly. Method: This research was designed as a descriptive study. The subjects were 103 elders living in Seoul. Data were collected from December 2004 through January 2005. The instrument used in this study was the elderly dependence scale developed by the Park (2004). Collected data were analyzed using SPSS 11.0 for Windows. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression were done. Results: In the results of regression, residence, education, vision and age were extracted as factors influencing the dependence of the elderly. The regression model explained 33% of the variance. Conclusion: Considering the results above, we need studies on the dependence of the elderly using more independent variables, on the changing pattern of dependence and influencing factors by longitudinal design, and on the elderly with functional limitations or cognitive impairment.

  • This study performed factor analysis for 21 independent variables related to the effect of illumination and suggested the effect by multiple regression analysis on the relationship between the effect of illumination and the satisfaction of use of a dependent variable to find the effect of illumination in urban parks at night and the effect of illumination on the satisfaction of use. The results of this study are as follows; 1) Of the 21 independent variables used to study the effect of illumination in urban parks at night, the impact on safety and possibility of crime was highly. The effects of illumination by factor analysis were abstracted as effects of removing anxiety, securing safety, increasing use. 2) As a result of multiple regression analysis, independent variables influencing satisfaction of use in urban park were proved as effects of removing anxiety, securing safety, increasing identity, preparing atmosphere and increasing use. Also, the effect of securing safety was the most important factor; it showed a level of importance 2 times higher than the effect of removing anxiety, and 7.7 times higher than the effect of preparing atmosphere in relative contribution of the effect of illumination to satisfaction of use. 3) Of the effects of illumination influencing satisfaction of use in urban parks, the effect of securing safety and the effect of increasing visibility were more significant than the effects of removing anxiety, preparing atmosphere and increasing use. This fact means that personal safety an the identity of persons or facilities in the space of use should be considered with priority in planning or designing illumination. Also, it implies hat, for night use in urban parks, lightness of the space is required for general safety of use at parks, and proper illuminance on the activity in the space of use should be required. The subject parks of this study are 8 urban neighborhood parks. The model on the effect of illumination and the satisfaction of use depends on characteristics and conditions of location of he park and user class, so the subject parks and persons should be varied, and the difference by sex or ages should be suggested.

  • In the uniaxial compressive test of a single specimen of transversely isotropic rock, its 5 independent elastic constants can not be defined since maximum 4 independent strain measurements are available theoretically. In order to solve this problem, one equation proposed by Saint Venant in 19C and confirmed by Lekhnitskii through the test experiences has been used for long time. Accordign to authors' experiences, however, this equation turned out to give erroneous elastic constants in some cases. Three new equations are suggested and their compatibilities are discussed in this paper. As the results of the analyses of the models, Lekhnitskii's suggested equation is effective for the specimen with the high dip angle whereas it results in the large erred output for that with dip angle less than $25{\sim}30$. It was found that the effectivenesses of three suggested equations and their compatibilities are subject to the dip angle and not to the amounts of elastic constants. Guide map to the selection of the compatible one of those suggested equations is presented as a result of the study.
