  • This exploratory study investigates the use of a computational knowledge engine (WolframAlpha) and social networking sites (Gmail, Yahoo and Facebook) by 200 students at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, their "friends" and their "friends of friends" during the 2009 through 2013 school years, and how this appears to have added value in knowledge generation. The primary aim is to identify what enhances productiveness in knowledge generation in Philippine Tertiary Education. The phenomenological approach is used, therefore there are no specific research questions or hypotheses proposed in this paper. Considering that knowledge generation is a complex phenomenon, a stochastic modelling approach is also used for the investigation that was developed specifically to study un-deterministic complex systems. A list of salient features for knowledge generation is presented as a result. In addition to these features, various problem types are identified from literature. These are then integrated to provide a proposed framework of inclusive (friendly) and innovative social networks, for knowledge generation in Philippine tertiary education. Such a framework is necessarily multidisciplinary and useful for problem-solving in a globalized and pluralist reality. The implementation of this framework is illustrated in the three parts of the study: Part 1: Online lessons, discussions, and examinations in General Psychology, Introduction to Sociology, and Life and Works of Jose Rizal, for the author's students in De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde; Part 2: Facebook Report analytics of students and teachers, their friends and their friends of friends via WolframAlpha; and Part 3: Social Network Analysis of the people and groups influencing the courses' scope-and-sequence in the new General Education Curriculum for Tertiary Schools and Institutions in the Philippines.

  • The fact that Herbart's education has realized in the educational context the Kant's theory of transcendental education by applying Kant's transcendentalism to education is of great significance for education. It also provides an implication for mathematics education that Herbart's education of mathematics education can be applied to mathematics education through an attempt to combine a practical ethics education and an aesthetic emotion education with mathematics education. Both Kant and Herbart clearly show that an only practical, aesthetic education would not exist as a solely theoretical mathematics education cannot. Therefore, these multi-dimensional aspects of mathematics education should be always considered as a whole although there could be a difference in importance among those aspects. It implies that, regardless of the environments for mathematics education, mathematics teachers and students must do mathematics education activities that take into consideration the humanity in its entirety. The theory of mathematics education based on Herbart's education reveals that the entireness of human being should not be neglected in any case. In this regard, Herbart's theory of education shows that mathematics education is an all-inclusive theory of mathematics education that embraces both phenomenon and transcendence.

  • This study examines the influence of the bodily interaction with digital technology on meaning-making process in a mathematical activity. Increasing interest in the use of multi-touch dynamic digital technology has brought the movement of the body to the center of research focus in recent mathematics education literature. Thereby, we investigate the process in which the meaning of the density of rational numbers emerges around the bodily interaction on the multi-touch dynamic digital technology. We analyze a case of a small group of primary school students with microethnography. In the result, the students formed the higher level of meaning of the density, where the finger movement of zooming in-and-out played a crucial role throughout the meaning-maknig process.

  • Tabletop games have been applied to improve the ability of social collaboration based on the characteristics that more than two people simultaneously interact on the tabletop. Especially, the tabletop games can be used as an educational tool for children with autism when it is implemented by considering educational and psychological models for children's behavioral characteristics. However, the previous collaborative games were designed for only disabled children so that it is hard to reflect cognitive and humanistic effects in inclusive education, where disabled children and non-disabled children interact in a same spatiotemporal environment. In this paper, therefore, we design a collaborative game on a multi-touch tabletop to enable spontaneous communication between disabled children and non-disabled children. Through user study, we evaluate the improvement in terms of the positive interaction and the degree of attention by comparing with a conventional collaborative game(e.g., a board game). We found that negative interaction including disabled children's abnormal behavior decreased and positive interaction such as body gestures and verbal communications increased. In addition, the tabletop game supported high immersiveness to all children by deriving equal level of attention time including individual and joint attention. We anticipate that the proposed game design can be utilized to develop collaborative contents for people with differences on sociality and cognitive ability.

  • In this perspective paper, we present seven elements of the appropriate educator mindset for teaching in the constructivist elementary mathematics classroom. The elements include supporting students as they construct their own understanding, eliminating deficit view of slow learners, setting new understanding and growth as the learning objective, providing opportunities to co-construct meaning with peers, using student contributions as the source of curricular material, encouraging all students to participate in learning, and providing instruction not bounded by time. In our struggles to provide authentic, inclusive elementary classrooms, we hope that our discussion of the educator mindset can increase discourse on constructivism from philosophy to practice in the community of mathematics education and policy makers.
