  • This study compared dip-coating and in situ polymerization methods for the development of nanofiber-based E-textile using polypyrrole. Nanofiber webs were fabricated by electrospinning an aqueous poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution. Subsequently, the PVA nanofiber web underwent thermal treatment to improve water resistance. Dip-coating and in situ polymerization methods were used to deposit polypyrrole on the surfaces of the nanofiber web. An FE-SEM analysis was also conducted to examine specimen surface characteristics along with EDS and FT-IR that analyzed the chemical bonding between polypyrrole and specimens. The line resistance and sheet resistance of the treated specimens were measured. Finally, an electrocardiogram (ECG) was measured with textile sensors made of the polypyrrole-deposited PVA nanofiber webs. The polypyrrole-deposited PVA nanofiber webs fabricated by dip-coating dissolved in the dip-coating solution and indicated damage to the nanofibers. However, in the case of in situ polymerization, polypyrrole nanoparticles were deposited on the surface and inter-web structure of the PVA nanofiber web. The resistance measurements indicated that polypyrrole-deposited PVA nanofiber webs fabricated by in situ polymerization with an average sheet resistance of 5.3 k(Ω/□). Polypyrrole-deposited PVA nanofiber webs fabricated by dip-coating showed an average sheet resistance of 57.3 k(Ω/□). Polypyrrole-deposited PVA nanofibers fabricated by in situ polymerization showed a lower line and sheet resistance; in addition, they detected the electrical activity of the heart during ECG measurements. The electrodes made from polypyrrole-deposited PVA nanofiber webs by in situ polymerization showed the best performance for sensing ECG signals among the evaluated specimens.

  • ZnO:Al thin films were deposited on glass substrate by RF magnetron sputtering followed by in situ heat treatment in the same chamber. Effects of in situ heat treatment on properties of ZnO:Al thin films were investigated in this study. As heat treatment temperature was increased, crystal quality was improved first and then it was deteriorated, surface roughness was decreased, and sheet resistance was also decreased. The decrease in sheet resistance was caused by increasing carrier concentration due to decreased surface roughness. The decrease in surface roughness resulted in increase of transmittance. Therefore, in situ heat treatment is an effective method for obtaining films with better electrical characteristics.

  • X-ray computed tomography (CT) is very useful for the quantitative evaluation of internal structures, particularly defects in rock samples, such as pores and fractures. In situ CT allows 3D imaging of a sample subjected to various external treatments such as loading and therefore enables observation of changes that occur during the loading process. We reviewed state-of-the-art of in situ CT applications for geomaterials. Two triaxial cells made using relatively low density but high strength materials were developed aimed at in situ CT scanning during hydro-mechanical laboratory testing of rocks. Preliminary results for in situ CT imaging of granite and sandstone samples with diameters ranging from 25 mm to 50 mm show a resolution range of 34~105 ㎛ per pixel pitch, indicating the feasibility of in situ CT observations for internal structural changes in rocks at the micrometer scale. Potassium iodide solution was found to improve the image contrast, and can be used as an injection fluid for hydro-mechanical testing combined with in situ CT scanning.

  • Since the hydraulic fracturing field testing method was introduced first to Korean geotechnical engineers in 1994, there have been lots of progresses in a hardware system as well as an interpretation tool. The hydrofracturing system of first generation was the pipe-line type, and it has been developed to a wire-line system at their second generation. The current up-to-date system is more compact and is able to be operated by all-in-one system. With a progress in a hardware system, the software for analyzing in-situ stress regime has also been progressed. The shut-in pressure, which is the most ambiguous parameter to be obtained from hydrofracturing pressure curves, can now be acquired automatically from the various methods. While the hardware and software for hydrofracturing tests are being developed during the last decade, the author could accumulate the field test results which can cover the almost whole area of South Korea. Currently these field data are used widely in a feasibility study or a preliminary design step for tunnel construction in Korea. Regarding the difficulties in a site selection and a test performance for the in-situ stress measurement at an off-shore area, the in-situ stress regime obtained from the field experiences in the land area can be used indirectly for the design of a sub-sea tunnel. From the hydrofracturing stress measurements, the trend of magnitude and direction of in-situ stress field was shown identically with the geological information in Korea.

  • We have fabricated an in situ ellipsometer operating at He-Ne wavelength. It can be applied to the real-time, in-situ tracking of the ellisometric change which occurs during various sample treatments. As a rotating analyzer type, all optical elements and related parts are designed to share a common hollow-axis configuration, and hence the ellipsometer is compact in shape and simple in design. It is mountable on the spare ports of vacuum chamber with ease. Using this ellipsometer, we observed the effective density variation of previously grown $TiO_2$ thin films by using electron beam evaporation. The packing density of the as-grown film was 82%. When exposed to atomsphere, the micro-void of the film was filled with water vapor. This water-filled $TiO_2$ thin film was subject to heating/cooling cycles in vacuum and the ellipsometric variation versus temperature and cycling number was measured in real time using this in situ He-Ne ellipsometer.

  • Chromosome rearrangements induced in human lymphocyte after in vitro exposure to chromium were analysed by the use of fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH) with triple combination of composite whole chromosome-specific probe for chromosome 1, 2 and 4. Chromosome aberrations was scored by the Protocol for Aberration Identification and Nomenclature Terminology (PAINT). Stable translocation was the most frequent type of aberrations and dicentrics and insertions were also observed. Chromium treatment enhanced the frequencies of stable translocations and color junctions in a dose-dependent manners, but no distinct increase of dicentrics and insertions was seen. The ratio of the yields of translocation to the yields of dicentric varied between 13 to 27. The presents results demonstrate fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) is useful for detecting chromosomal rearrangements induced by chromium.

  • In this paper, The electrical properties of MOS capacitors and transistoras with gate of in-situ doped amorphous Si and poly Si doped by POCI$_3$. Under constant current F-N stress, MOS capacitors with in-situ doped amorphous Si gate have shown the best resistance to degradation in reliabilty properties such as increase of leakage current, shift of gate voltage (V$_{g}$). shift of flat band voltage (V$_{fb}$) and charge to breakdown(Q$_{bd}$). Also, MOSFETs with in-situ doped amorphous Si gate have shown to have less degradation in transistor properties such as threshold voltage, transconductance and drain current. These improvements observed in MOS devices with in-situ doped amorphous Si gate is attributed to less local thinning spots at the gate/SiO$_2$ interface, caused by the large grain size and the smoothness of the surface at the gate/SiO$_2$ interface.

  • Green Frame is a building frame system to construct a column-beam structure using composite precast concrete members. To reduce the cost of producing precast concrete, in-situ production of members is required. However, when the structural members are produced on site, it needs a large space for production. So, "Just-In-Time" production method should be adopted. For Just-In-Time to be realized, the early strength of members should be ensured for them to be transported. Thus, steam curing to secure the early strength is applied in Green Frame. Yet, a large-scale steam curing system is not possible for in-situ production of precast concrete. A smaller steam curing system is needed. In this regard, the study is aimed to develop a new steam curing method applicable to the in-situ production of precast concrete.

  • Cavity expansion is a classical problem in the field of solid mechanics with a wide range of applications in geotechnical and petroleum engineering. A drained solution is developed for cylindrical cavity expansion in anisotropic soils under biaxial in-situ stresses using a K0-based anisotropic modified Cam-clay model (K0-AMCC). The problem is formulated by solving differential equations using an auxiliary variable, which provides analytical expressions for the volume and four stress components of the soil around the cylindrical cavity. The solution is validated by comparisons with existing well-developed solutions. The results show that the present solution well captures the cavity expansion responses in anisotropic soils under biaxial in-situ stresses, and removes limiting assumptions that the cylindrical cavity expands under uniform in-situ stress in isotropic soils. The elastic-plastic boundary of the expanding cylindrical cavity in K0-consolidated anisotropic soils under biaxial in-situ stresses is a circle rather than an ellipse in isotropic soils, and the mathematical proof is provided in detail.
